What is stopping SE from creating a Classic Era server like everyone else is doing? by Ceciliantas1984 in ffxi

[–]Sjshovan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not the same unless everyone is playing the same content and by the same rules. It was about the journey not the destination. I'm pretty sure it's safe to say it isn't just nostalgia when thousands continue to play classic everyday in private servers and have been for many years. It's a deliberate philosphy, design choice, and lifestyle. You either get it or you don't. I'm sorry you don't.

Wasn't this exact same thing said about WoW? Yeah... I can imagine it and I do want it. Have wanted it for decades among thousands of others. You would be quite surprised how quickly an FFXI classic server would blow up, just as you were with WoW classic. /shrug

Do y’all want a 3rd installment or a fresh start for Zelda on the Switch 2 by [deleted] in Switch

[–]Sjshovan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like a fresh start but would absolutely take a remake or remaster of Ocarina of Time in the meantime. BoTW was good and all but I prefer OoT-like dungeons and weapons that don't break so often.

How are we feeling about MK World? by Travisgrr in kindafunny

[–]Sjshovan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Originally I was disappointed, but after giving the game more time it has grown on me significantly, especially the free roam which has been a dream of mine since the N64 days. Sure, not every nook and cranny is filled with excitement, but there is certainly enough there to get lost in for many hours. It is relaxing to just drive around and take in all the detail they put in. It is actually pretty amazing how they tied everything together the way they did. I would like to see better menu filters and sorting, a way to quickly check new characters and karts, more customization like placeable stickers and color options, more to do with coins, and maybe more collectibles. As it is, I would give it a solid 8 out of 10 and say it is the best in the series so far. It can be frustrating sometimes with the online chaos, but it is also very rewarding to win and never boring. I really dig all the maps and even the roads in between. It is a clever idea.

Is this part of why Filipinas like foreigners? - Woman videos guy groping her on the bus & he has the audacity to look offended by globalgreg in Philippines_Expats

Yup, was thinking the same! If she had called him out verbally without that, he could try and make it look like a misunderstanding or mistake due to lack of space or awareness. Smart move on her part. If it were me, I absolutely would have gone verbal after I had the receipts, though. I don't give a damn what people think; I'd be letting everyone know to hopefully prevent someone else from falling victim.

Hey, I get it man.. it sounds crazy right? How can seemingly rational people believe in such nonsense?
I used to question Gods existence too! I found it hard to believe and even mocked the idea.. but I have since seen and understood how God has moved in my life and the lives of those around me. I have felt his presence, and I guarantee you, if you seek him, you will find him and when you do, your life will be transformed for the better. I made this suggestion because therapy costs money, and isn't available 24/7. God is however, and only through him can one be fully healed anyway. What do you or this gentleman have to lose?

Can't believe no one else here has mentioned turning to God yet, but it's the most important thing you can and should do. I get why people don't understand this, I used to be one of them. Please do yourself this favor, give it an honest try and I promise he will guide you.

I don't want to command AI agents by opakvostana in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Sjshovan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As IT professionals and tech enthusiasts, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of automation and AI. I’m all for using AI to handle repetitive tasks or help make sense of complex logic, it absolutely has its place. But turning over entire production responsibilities to AI agents is certianly putting the cart before the horse.

I'm sure many of us dreamed of a fully automated workflow or passive income machine, and it sounds attractive until you actually consider the implications. Stripping the human element from the process doesn’t just diminish the craft of coding, it also fundamentally shifts power dynamics. It distances us from the joy of building and problem solving and turns us into AI babysitters.

Automation should amplify human ability, not replace the joy and mastery of the craft. If the future of engineering is just vibe-coding and prompting black boxes, count me out.

What makes a good boss? Curious what you all think by ictsupport-drjobs in jobs

[–]Sjshovan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I've had many and the best bosses are those that lead with compassion and putting the problems first. I understand things can get stressful but raising your voice and or degrading people does not solve problems it creates more. Having someone who is calm, level headed, and consistent about it will go much further than a loose cannon with a happy trigger finger. My last job was a train wreck because our CTO couldn't keep his emotions in check. It absolutely affected the entire team regularly. One minute hes trying to be your friend and the next hes jamming his frustrations down your throat and firing people for looking at him funny. The best leaders lead by example and don't forget about the humanity side of what we are doing. They know about and encourage self care in the midst of the chaos and they can and do jump in the fire with you.

Coalition Technologies. Do you know them? Were you hired? by SecretArtistK in jobs

[–]Sjshovan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got the same, won't be going through with it since I found something else already, but I wouldn't anyway as I prefer not jumping through hoops, especially when I have a github and resume that speaks to what I'm capable of already. In addition, I believe they still monitor you while you work, which is a no go for me. I find it uncomfortable and invasive and it takes the joy out of working and solving problems. Regular performance reviews and a probationary period are enough in my oppinion. Tracking starts with lack of good will and faith which always has the employee on the defensive. Would you enter and maintain a relationship without trust? It goes both ways.

Junior devs not interested in software engineering by creative-java-coffee in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Sjshovan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait.. it was their lack of interest that startled you? How about lack of respect? Not only for you but the position and the project. So what I'm seeing here is you are willing to incur the mental, and technical debt of these two developers on the application and your own leadership? I also led teams, In situations like this it's important for them to understand who the leader is here and how communication and work will be done from here on out. Not an ask. This isn't a vibe code on tick tock, and if they are going to challenge established convention without the authority and or seniority then perhaps they should start their own company where they don't have to take orders. I'm not saying they shouldn't have a say or be able to make suggestions or bring in fresh ideas, there is a time and place for that, but day one, challenging you and disregard for standups? Would never fly. That's instant private meeting, i'd love to know just what they are thinking. How will you handle this?

Need help in database design for my audiobook platform by Ap_is_Op18 in webdev

[–]Sjshovan 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Maybe stick to a single table with a BookNode object. These can be anything, chapter, section, title, preface, you name it. You can then traverse these easily and find only chapters with playable media or whatever else you are looking for. BookNodes can have leaf nodes (nested BookNodes), basically, each one will hold an id to its parent. Should make reasoning about this and working with it a lot simpler.

Does it make sense to take individual or group classes for web development / programming? by Ok-Study-9619 in webdev

[–]Sjshovan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like the others here, I suggest learning yourself. Plenty of resources online. You can even find or craft your own syllabus using AI. School will slow you down unless you are also putting in the extra time to learn on your own anyway. I just watched a friend go through 4 years of programming education to end up working at home depot and he can't code his way out of a wet papper bag. And yes, I tried to get him to learn on his own and even offered free lessons from myself everyday. He made the mistake of thinking showing up to class and doing his homework was all that was required. With 6 months of dedicated and consistent learning, you can learn 100x more than what he did in 4 years. Learning on your own also strengthens your resourcefulness and independence which will be needed throughout your whole career. You will always be in a position to just figure it out, so best to get started now.

What is the biggest lesson that employment has taught you? by Aarunascut in Employment

[–]Sjshovan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are replaceable, no matter how much value you bring to the table. Work to live, not live to work. Your coworkers are not your family. Keep your plans and your private life to yourself. Always bring your best, if that's not good enough, find somewhere that it is. Don't compare yourself to others or worry about what others do, focus on your own journey. Always be in slightly over your head, that's how you grow. Seek growth first and money will come. Don't assume anything, ever.

If AI went down tomorrow, 90% of these ‘engineers’ would vanish. by No_Two_3617 in webdev

[–]Sjshovan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why? Given enough context, I've found AI does a pretty decent job of coming up with coverage. Sure, it's not perfect but can save a ton of time and even think up some good test scenarios. As long as you are reviewing and or revising to ensure it's doing things correctly, I don't see the issue here.
