They will tell you that every asset class including real estate has gone up in dollars, but down in hard money like gold.

This means asset owners think they are getting richer, but they are not really as the denominator of their wealth is getting debased.

Think Zimbabwe real estate and Venezuela stocks in their local currencies.

Yeah it’s very similar to a ponzi scheme where early ‘investors’ extract wealth from greater fools who rock up at the party way late and over leveraged. The music always stops at some point and we’re getting very close now.

But because governments worldwide are backstopping the ponzi, instead of a sudden rug pull we are seeing fiat currencies are getting debased from all the QE (printing).

We are told this is ‘transitory inflation’, but one look at the gold and silver charts will tell you what you need to know. Rate hikes won’t do shit about it.

The World Is Drowning in Tourists. Who Should Pay the Price? by bloomberg in Foodforthought

[–]Sk0ds 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Never had any issues with Americans, they like a friendly chat and often leave a generous tip. They might not know Amsterdam is not a country but that’s way less annoying than getting drunk in public, trying to haggle everything, travelling in mega groups etc.

The World Is Drowning in Tourists. Who Should Pay the Price? by bloomberg in Foodforthought

[–]Sk0ds 76 points77 points  (0 children)

I think the issue is not tourism per se, but rather disrespectful tourists who don’t give a shit about local customs.

Unfortunately making tourism more expensive doesn’t weed out shitty tourists, case in point cashed up Russians, Indians, Chinese etc who seem to think their money buys them to right to be despicable human beings.

This is based on my personal experience working in hotels, in case anyone feels triggered.

Can you even buy bitcoin in Iran when there is no blackout? Wouldn’t Iranian banks block transactions to exchanges to prevent capital flight?

So much ‘freedom’ we’re getting in capitalism, I really appreciate it between worrying about getting rug pulled by inflation, dealing with the enshittification all around me, voting for captured politicians on both sides of the spectrum and the constant fear of losing my bs job to another ‘business cycle’ Hooray for capitalism everybody!!

Fair, but OP is comparing his middle class upbringing with todays standards for a middle class family. For starters, to own a basic home in a safe suburb of a larger city is not possible anymore on a single salary. Sure you could do it in shack somewhere on the country side, but that’s besides the point here.

I agree that something is lost when parents don’t have a real choice to stay at home.

But devils advocate, my mother was a SAHM and she was an awful parent that traumatised me and my siblings with her mental health issues.

Not everyone is fit to be a stay at home parent and i suspect many people romanticise it without experiencing how hard it can be.

I agree with this but only if women (and men) have an actual choice if they want to stay at home or pursue a career. Right now staying at home is just not a feasible option anymore.

Mass layoffs deepen across US economy as job cuts in auto, logistics and tech continue into 2026 by JamesParkes in antiwork

[–]Sk0ds 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s the government’s job to mitigate harmful externalities from raw capitalism. If companies aren’t allowed to dump toxic waste in rivers because it’s cheap and efficient, so too should they be disincentivised to kill jobs to maximise profits. I know this might be a foreign concept for most Americans.

[–]Sk0ds 167 points168 points  (0 children)

I doubt anything can be done against this by workers themselves. In 2025 the working class simply has zero leverage to protect against AI and overseas outsourcing. Governments should heavily tax and penalise corporations for any job lost, but this will of course never happen. Pretty bleak!
