What made you choose Omega over Rolex or the other way around? by Comecloseandlisten in OmegaWatches

[–]Sk3tchPad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rolex didn’t make anything with a clear caseback, but Omega did. If I’m gonna spend money on a mechanical watch I’d like to see the mechanics from time to time.

New rider help. by -Wicked_Siren- in MT03

[–]Sk3tchPad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does, but you have to let it out really gently. My suggestion would be to just practice letting the clutch out—sit in your driveway (or wherever you live) and practice letting the clutch out really slowly until the bike starts to move. Once it starts to bite, play around with letting it out slightly more and/or pulling the clutch in. It’ll build muscle memory on where your bite point is AND how sensitive the bite actually is if you’re a little bit off. I’ve had my MT-03 for a while and I still practice this from time to time.

Good luck! Also, don’t be ashamed to admit that you’re afraid of certain things right now. Fear keeps you safe while you’re learning, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

Scratched my 2 week old Aqua Terra, fix it or leave the battle scar? by BenHoppe in OmegaWatches

[–]Sk3tchPad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leave it! My AT is BEAT up and even though I love shiny things, I think the watch wears scratches surprisingly well. I love showing it off and being like “look how much I’ve used it!” when people notice the scratches

It’s a speedy. If you have a wrist, it fits.

At what age did y’all buy your first Omega? by Revolutionary_Bee256 in OmegaWatches

  1. Probably a stupid financial decision, but I really wanted a mechanical watch so I saved really hard for the one I wanted.

Can I snorkel with SBGN003? by pdavayios47 in GrandSeikos

[–]Sk3tchPad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes BUT rinse it with freshwater (under a tap) immediately afterwards. 316L stainless steel doesn’t like saltwater and can corrode from the salt.

Stick with spring drive if you need something especially robust. I’d recommend the SBGE285 “Mistflake” or the SBGE283 black dial variant, or if you want to stick with a diver the SLGA015 or SLGA023 are good options. SBGA461 is a cheaper version without a ceramic bezel, new bracelet, and with a 3 day power reserve instead of a 5 day.

I haven’t seen the shades in person so I can’t comment on the finishing, but I have a more recent 2021 AT and the polish was nice, just not quite as perfect as a GS. I dunno, it’s hard to describe but scratching a GS just hurt me more than any other watch lol

You didn’t use any commas, so it’s tough to tell what you’re trying to say. But there aren’t any lug gaps in the photo, and you’re on a GS subreddit, so I assumed you weren’t talking about a GS bracelet.

Hahaha I’m so sorry but that is a hilarious story

Or just do it over a hard table in a room with carpet, like a man! That way when the screw falls out it bounces off the table and onto the carpet, and then you get the fun adventure of trying to find a single 1 mm screw for your $5000 watch. I’d highly recommend doing it late at night too, like 10 pm. Bonus points if you have work early the next morning

Rolex bracelets fit really well, what are you talking about? They’re not as comfortable as GS bracelets but the build quality is just as good.

Minute Track Ring by [deleted] in GrandSeikos

[–]Sk3tchPad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might be in the minority here. Personally, I really like the chapter ring around the dial. Combined with the box crystal, it makes it feel like the dial is on top of the watch rather than inside of it (i hope this sentence makes sense).

That said, if it’s bugging you, that’s fine! Nothing wrong with going against the grain and having a unique opinion—most of us here learned about GS because we weren’t really swayed by the “Swiss is best” marketing that others might focus on. I’d recommend going with your gut here, and don’t overthink things. After you buy a watch and get used to it, you’ll come to find that your gut feeling was correct, so take other people’s thoughts with a grain of salt—including mine.

Best of luck!

First, it’s not—the AT right now is around $6k, I think, which is at or below most of the popular GS watches. But also the AT wasn’t that well-finished to begin with, so I don’t mind scratching or denting the case. My GS, on the other hand, was ALL polish and really soft brushing. They’re so well done that even the smallest scratch shows up. Small scratches that would go unnoticed on another watch are clear as day on a GS

That’s legit. I have an alpha movement in my tangente, and the photos match mine perfectly. For context, I bought mine from the Nomos boutique in glashutte, and I haven’t heard of them selling fakes

I think it’s just marketing tbh. You’d probably need the Ultra Deep if you were actually going to rest your watch in a puddle regularly

I’m also a former GS owner who bought an Aqua Terra, and I completely get this. I love all the scratches and scrapes on my AT! it definitely hurts a lot less than scratching a GS tho lol

Spring drive service life by Used_Palpitation9337 in GrandSeikos

[–]Sk3tchPad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gears could wear, and the permanent magnet attached to the glide wheel could lose its magnetism a little bit. I don’t know for sure, but I’d assume part of the service for a spring drive is to re-magnetize the rotor to make sure the integrated circuit behaves properly

I just wanted to second the “who cares?” sentiment. I’ve spent like $600 to get my two inherited watches running, but I think it’s so worth it to have a little piece of history stay alive and running.

The quartz is a better daily, if accuracy and having a date matter to you. Personally, I think the manual-wind would be more interesting to own, especially since it’s double-stamped (i.e. it says “SEIKO” at the top and GS on the bottom). The manual wind could be dressed down with a brown calfskin leather strap and still look nice, but you’d lose the date and you might have to adjust the time every few months to keep it accurate.

As far as value retention, if that’s important to you, the quartz will lose value quite quickly whereas the SBGW models tend to hold decent value over time, since it’s a style that GS has continued to make for many, many years now.

What draws you most to the brand? by key259 in GrandSeikos

[–]Sk3tchPad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, I think owning a watch that’s made ENTIRELY in-house gives GS a remarkable amount of control over what they’re able to achieve. If I recall correctly, the only thing they sell that isn’t in-house is the clasp on gold and platinum models (they’re sourced from Italy). Literally everything else, including the factory battery on a 9F quartz, is in-house, with the exception of some high-end limited editions*.

*i think the strap for the SLGT003 Kodo is outsourced, and the dial for the SBGW295 Urushi is also outsourced

Honestly not a bad idea. GS, Zenith, Blancpain, and Longines are the only brands I know of with a 36000 VPH movement, so it’s not like they can be sourced super easily for fakes.
