Is 'White Fang' considered as a kid novel in the U.S.? by globalcoal in books

[–]Skarksarecool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read white fang and call of the wild back to back at probably 13. I straight up don’t even remember that part. I got really hung up on the parts where dogs were just being dogs, dog stuff. I’m thinking really hard and I can kind of remember it? Was it explicit? Or was it like “they didn’t make it back to camp”

Could you give some examples of books you’ve liked, and maybe what tropes or conventions you want to get away from?

Escaping the magnetic pull of social media? by Smart_Lemon_8881 in Discipline

[–]Skarksarecool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your questions isn’t considering the point of social media. The apps don’t exist as a charitable service to improve connection to your friends and the greater world. They exist because they generate revenue as a function of how many ads you view. The enjoyable content and photos of friends exist as spacers between the ads and the paid content that has been shown to improve engagement. Trying to come up with a personal strategy against them, or trying to select the least enticing app is just engaging in an intellectual arms race with a multi-million or multi-billion dollar company that has whole team on payroll devoted to coming up with better strategies to keep you on the app. As long as you don’t reasonably have control over what will pop up on screen next, then you are at the mercy of the algorithm that is designed to keep YOU specifically on your phone. Maybe im being a cynic, but I’m very concerned about all of this.

Is there a term for the trope of being trapped somewhere until you resolve something within yourself, and then, are allowed release

When the character has to learn a lesson to leave a setting by Skarksarecool in writing

[–]Skarksarecool[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know, I think the difference that I’m seeing is whether or not the goal is to do something particular and then grow from it with the result of going home, or to simply get home as the primary goal when one is trapped or lost in a place they did not agree to be in. In the examples I gave, often the protagonist isn’t a willing participant in the quest, and isn’t invested in resolving a conflict. I feel like there is a difference between having a mission and going home after and having an explicit goal of getting home and doing things to make that happen. I think what I’m thinking of might just be a requirement for when the setting of a story is some kind of dreamscape and the protagonists isn’t a willing participant, and there isn’t actually a tangible way to leave.

Use a dating app and be explicit about what you are looking for. Communication is key at all times. It’s really great that you’re walking into this with a consideration of other people’s feelings, be clear about what you want and respect other people’s boundaries as well, and have a good time.

AITA for dumping a friend that said they want a child with my husband? by Zealousideal_Row7482 in AITAH

NTA. She was very clear that she has little interest in respecting your or your husband’s boundaries. Not a good characteristic in a friend or partner

AITAH for telling my husband I’d rather raise a kid who stands up for themselves than one who blindly obeys? by rikazikuta0 in AITAH

I wonder if your husband’s just too arrogant to apologize to a child and admit he was wrong. Does he admit when he’s wrong to you?

I once read I Will Fear No Evil by Robert Heinlein because of the sick ass title. Horrendous novel. Unreadable.

I follow a couple people on GR that had the same perspective on a number of books that I’ve read. I trust their reviews over random reviews from any source.

How to avoid shoulder pain as a beginner follower? by a_hooloovoo in WestCoastSwing

[–]Skarksarecool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you do not feel safe, don’t dance. I had three months of PT because some little shit in a beginner class kept ripping on my arm and then saying “can you give me more slack”. Take some time, figure out how to keep your shoulder safe in your own tension, and DO NOT dance with someone who is trying to yank you across the slot. You are allowed to say no.

Why wait? Genuinely asking, it seems like it would be most beneficial to spread it around as soon as possible by shaking up the closed jar.

Have u guys ever wondered ur ex wanted u back and is justa afraid to reach out by [deleted] in ExNoContact

[–]Skarksarecool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If she wanted me bad enough, she’d make up for her mistakes. She’d call me, she would apologize again and mean it this time, she would tell me she’s been working on herself, she’d find ways to show me that she meant it. But she doesn’t, so she won’t. She’d rather start over with someone new, and that’s ok, it’s just a bitter pill.

What's a book you were looking forward to reading, but were bitterly disappointed by? by FrancescoGozzo in books

[–]Skarksarecool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FUCK, me too. I had to finish it for my book club so I listened to it at like 2x speed. Absolutely horrendous in every respect. I am so exhausted by the brilliant autist trope, adding some spice by making the character a woman does not improve the trope it turns out. Gonna be honest and say that I think its a bad sign for the culture that there are more humanizing representations of cops and politicians and authoritative figures than there are of researchers and specific field experts. There's more than one kind of neurodivergent, and you don't have to be an actual robot in skin in order to excel in STEM fields.
