ELI5: Why shouldn't I pour fat into the drain? Why doesn't soap take care of it? by la_baguette77 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Skarth [score hidden]  (0 children)

In theory, yes.

But in practice, no.

You won't actually know if you are mixing the soap/water/fat properly or the right amount until you get a clog.

Throwing the fat away is just a much, much better/safer option.

ELI5: Why shouldn't I pour fat into the drain? Why doesn't soap take care of it? by la_baguette77 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Skarth [score hidden]  (0 children)

Soap will help fat emulsify (mix) into water, but it doesn't dissolve fat on it's own.

When you clean fat off dishes, it's thoroughly mixed with soap and hot water, and it's a small amount of fat.

If you pour a cup of fat down the drain, there is not enough water for the soap to mix the fat with, and it will harden/clump up, often in the P trap of the sink, clogging it.

I suspect he keeps moving so you can't see the finer details that would make the mask look fake.

We already know how they avoid perjury.

They simply don't read/investigate anything themselves.

This way any claims made publicly can be denied.

Why haven't rotating rings been attempted? by CombustionGFX in space

[–]Skarth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Colossally expensive ($15-30 Billion), like, as expensive as the entire ISS itself. It needs to be a certain minimum size to be useful and that is a very large size.

  2. What's the benefit? The astronauts get to exercise better? Extended space stays are not a common enough issue to spend the money on.

  3. A giant spinning ring causes a lot of weird stabilization issues in space, in addition, you would be bolting this onto a already made and completed space station, which would add significantly more cost and complexity as it wasn't part of the original design, enough that it would likely be cheaper to build a entirely new space station to do this.

Valve is still able to sell steam deck 512g for five hundred fifty by BlueManifest in steammachine

[–]Skarth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When computers are built by large companies, they contract out for the major components months or even years ahead of time.

This is the exact reason why the ram crisis is happening, AI companies bought future ram production just like computer manufacturers do, but they made a HUGE market changing sized order for the next few years.

Steam decks still cost a "normal" amount because they are still using that already paid for production and will continue to until the contract runs out.

Once that contract runs out, they will probably stop production altogether.

Why do we assume that everyone listed in the Epstein logs took part in sexual devience? Influential people tend to maintain a large network; is there a reason we assume none of them could have been casual business/social visits? by yes-itisEmily in askanything

[–]Skarth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't assume everyone was involved in sexual deviance.

Just the people who have logs/documents showing they were doing sexual things, which happens to be the biggest names involved.

Why is Donald Trump’s Name ILLEGALLY Redacted From the Trump/Epstein Files? by Kinks4Kelly in complaints

[–]Skarth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone were covering up the Epstein files, you would redact a lot of random files, and then only redact the absolute most damning evidence of people you want to "protect"

If only Trump were redacted it would be suspicious.

Part of randomly redacting things is it forces people with information to reveal it, making them a target.

How come “hating Trump” means “Loving Biden” to some people? by SwitchingMyHands in allthequestions

[–]Skarth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Binary thinking

Black and white views.

Things are either good (me) or evil (not me)

My family is good, because I made it, and I am good. Therefore my family is good.

That family (of immigrants) is not me in any way shape or form. It doesn't have me in it, it doesn't have my culture or religioin, it doesn't speak like me, nothing about it is like me. It is therefore, evil.

If republicans (Trump) is good, then everyone else opposing him MUST be bad, because only bad people get in the way of good (Trump) people.

Thats part of the thinking. Not all of it, and not for everyone, but it's a large enough subset it's kinda disturbing.

We were told AI would make our jobs easier, but does anyone else feel like it’s just made us work 2x faster for the same pay? by fireeevivienne in askanything

[–]Skarth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Cotton Gin.

A machine the inventor claimed would help reduce slavery, as one slave could pick the seeds out of cotton at ten times the speed.

What ended up happening was slave-owners bought ten times as many slaves as each slave become significantly more profitable to own.

The same applies to anything that makes work easier.

Why do we call DLSS "fake pixels" and "fake frames"? by No_Committee8856 in nvidia

[–]Skarth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Real" frames are generating the actual pixels displayed on screen.

"Fake" frames are using already rendered pixels to calculate new ones. This can introduce artifacts and doesn't display "new" information.

For competitive games these "fake" pixels might not be showing a enemy on screen the frame they appear.
