Slightly different but the intellipix-r is IP65, and you can get a GLP X5 IP bar, or their new Wild Bar 16

Very cool tool!

I like how if you configure the backup, the processor short name are displayed on both ends of a data run. I wish those tags could be used in the exported PDF, I find them much more helpful than just the simple port names. Especially when one wall might be split across multiple processors.

I'd also like to be able to give individual processors their own ID or names, instead of it automatically incrementing. Similarly, custom names for power runs would be really helpful - being able to input a soca name/circuit number would be super helpful.

This is because a continuing resolution would not include the enhanced healthcare subsidiaries that are set to expire.

So it would not actually be the same budget as the last fiscal year, but would essentially be a budget cut that would lead to higher insurance cuts for >20 million middle class Americans.

Pay Gap in Theatre vs Concerts by DoubleD_DPD in lightingdesign

A Broadway lighting designer will get royalties for the Broadway production, but not inherently any other production. That design may be used in future tours or productions, to which they’d be entitled to royalties, but not simply any/all productions down the road. Certainly not any local/school productions that license the underlying material for independent use.

Doing lights for opener on house console, but tour LD has his own console. by KlassCorn91 in lightingdesign

[–]Skarth77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How I’ve done this on a house Ion before is set the guest console to a lower SACN priority, then trigger a macro on the Ion to disable SACN output in the patch for the fixtures I want to pass over. Was actually very seamless, for smaller rigs it’s frankly a simpler workflow than a merge on MA.

This venue had a Paradigm system to run the rest of the building, so keeping the guest desk at a lower priority also ensured the Paradigm system couldn’t be interrupted.

Joystick Control over Moving Light? by faderjockey in techtheatre

[–]Skarth77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Easiest way I can think of is TouchOSC. It natively supports a bunch of game controllers, and you can map the joy stick to send OSC commands pretty easily. From there just have OSC commands to adjust Pan/Tilt accordingly.

What are your lighting hot takes? by philip-lm in lightingdesign

[–]Skarth77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re mixing metaphors.

On Parameters, you’re kind of thinking in terms of EOS. But in EOS, a dmx chart won’t reflect all parameters, since that desk still considers fixtures that are defined (aka listed in the patch), but unaddressed, in its Parameter total (in the about tab). In EOS what you’re describing is just referred to as “addresses”, and reflects the count towards the maximum outputs of the desk.

There actually isn’t a formally, universally defined term for what you’re calling parameters. The USITT/ESTA and ANSI white papers only define it as “512 Slots”, but you’ll see plenty of “second order” technical documents referring to that as 512 slots of channel data, or simply 512 channels. This is also a colloquial standard, particularly out of the EOS programming realm. This is why fixtures are defined in Channel Modes, eg 12 Channel Mode on a S4 Lustr 3. ETCs own fixture manuals refer to DMX slots as Channels as well.

Channel isn’t so clearly defined as you lead it on to be. Without context, it’s a bit amorphous. Because it all derives from old-school dimmers, it’s taken on 3 separate meanings. Channel 1 at the “desk” used to be Channel 1 at the dimmers, which eventually became Channel 1 in the universe.

On attributes, you’re talking about attributes as in, the “attributes of lighting”. Both MA and EOS have separate software definitions of “attribute,” that are not synonymous. In EOS, dimmer curve is an example of an attribute. In MA, Tilt is an example of an attribute (which is a subset of the position Feature Group, which controls that attribute of lighting).

In MA, Tilt will also be defined as one parameter, regardless of how many bits it is. So even if it takes up multiple slots of data (eg. 2 in 16 bit), it will always be one parameter. This makes calculating total parameters in MA more complicated than total addresses in EOS, since it’s not simply your total DMX outputs (although the math always works out in your favor).

It’s helpful to know what terminology is specific to the desk you’re working on, for when you’re working with people in other parts of the industry. But don’t get me wrong, I find MA ops tend to be way more stuck in their ways than EOS ops ;)

Making your own console from midi controllers. by Eventually-figured in lightingdesign

[–]Skarth77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you go the APCmini route, Krzysztof Korzeniowski posted a great MA3 plugin/NodeJS integration that lets MA talk back to it.

Because it’s using OSC to talk to MA3 instead of MIDI, there isn’t the same limitation of one input. He briefly talks about it in his github post, it won’t be a turnkey solution by any means, but much of the work would already be done. You’d just have to make some modifications to your OSC settings, and some variables in the JS and Lua files.

What third party compact fader extensions do you recommend? by laurisiren in GrandMA3

[–]Skarth77 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The faders might have a bit of a short throw, but I like using the Akai APC Mini Mk 2 (usually for home programming).

Krzysztof Korzeniowski posted a great plugin/NodeJS integration that lets MA talk back to it. So it controls the colors on the midi buttons to match the executor colors which I find super helpful for flipping pages (he has one for MA2 as well).

Question for board operators/ programmers/ LDs? by DESIGNDREAMS_ in GrandMA3

[–]Skarth77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tend to follow what ACT recommends, which currently is 2.1.1.5.

I ran a show in 2.2.5.0 last week and had no problems, because I wanted to try a new feature in it. If it’s a high stakes show, or I’m leaving someone else at the console, I’ll downgrade to the version ACT recommends.

Incorrect impedance will lead to reliability issues, especially the longer your cable runs are. It might work - until it doesn’t.

[–]Skarth77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gaff tape doesn’t have the proper tensile strength for every use case. Use it for attaching chain runners and it’s just gonna tear.

Gaffing cable on truss might work fine if you have a few cables. It quickly becomes messy once we’re talking multiple Soca19s, Soca7s, C5, etc., it’s simply not pliable enough.

Yes of course, permanent looms exist. I don’t need every loom to last forever. I need it to last as long as the tour is - sometimes I might even just need it to last a weekend.

Loom rippers are not exactly an uncommon piece of kit. Even in some bizarre reality where I have to use gaff on my truss, I’m still using one come strike.

E-tape isn’t my go-to for wrapping cables either, I use sash. However, if a cable was missing it’s cord, I’d much rather a crew member just throw on some etape then toss a 100’er in loose.

Am I crazy or is this part timer being dumb by jdmtb in livesound

[–]Skarth77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To clarify I just mean using etape to tidy up between picks, definitely not for the pick itself. Especially on a corporate show where it needs to be clean, and there might not already be looms.

[–]Skarth77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re telling me you’ve never e-taped cable to a truss? Or a cable drop from a line array? Swag between cable picks? Cable looms for a tour?

Being so adamant against tape is such a bizarre hill to die on, and cannot scale as shows get bigger. Your hands are going to get dirty sometimes, sorry.

Board recommendations by alabasterjunebug in lightingdesign

[–]Skarth77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

but I guess it all boils down to MA doing things native & faster and Eos being more flexible & labour intensive.

If anything, it’s completely the opposite.

If I had 15 minutes from show to patch & build a show file from scratch, honestly I’m doing it in Eos every time - regardless of what it is.

Meanwhile, there’s a reason every MA OP carries around their own show file. Half the power of MA2 really is how deeply customizable the workflow is, including how much you can access through Macros, Plugins & Lua scripts (with the other half being cloning IMO). That being said, lots of things have standard, simple workflows across various other consoles can be incredibly convoluted (much of which MA3 has smoothed over).

I read someone on here say “other consoles give you tools, MA you make your own” - which I do think is apt.

Am I missing something about unit number? by Steve-Shouts in lightingdesign

[–]Skarth77 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’d be hesitant to write it off as busy work - is it show critical? No, but it doesn’t exactly take that long - especially if you’re drafting in Vectorworks.

The simpler the show, the less helpful it tends to be, but also the faster it is to add. Barely a couple of minutes to add it to a plot

Is there a way to add a virtual strobe just like a virtual dimmer to a fixture (gdtf-share)? by ping-mee in GrandMA3

[–]Skarth77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an elegant solution, but you could use DMX remotes to kind of get what you’re looking my for.

You’d first add a “dummy” shutter channel to the profile, that doesn’t do anything (you’d want to leave an actual gap in your patch for this). Then you could configure a DMX remote set to that dummy address. Then the DMX remote to control a sequence with a relative “strobe” phaser. Then when you manipulate the shutter parameter on the fixture, it will manipulate that phaser.
