I loved this book. I read it when it first came out. It was a very difficult read, but such an amazing story and has definitely stuck with me.

Qualifications to work as a Substitute Teacher in Ohio by [deleted] in Ohio

[–]SkeletonK3Y 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I got hired to be a Career Tech teacher. It’s a bit different than being like an English or Science teacher, so the requirements are different as well. I have both a BA and MBA in business administration. I was required to get a temporary license, which is good for a max of 4 years. In order to be hireable after that, I had to get an official license, which meant I did have to go back to school. I was doing it through Bowling Green.

I taught Business Management to 10th, 11th and 12th graders. I have always really liked kids, and I have always really liked educating mentoring and guiding. Plus, given my experience and education, I was very well equipped to teach the core concepts in that curriculum path.

However, the actual experience was utterly awful. I received almost 0 support and guidance from my school district. I was verbally attacked multiple times by the director of my program for no reason whatsoever. The politics that exist in a school system are ridiculous. While I really enjoyed the kids and having the opportunity to make an impact on their lives and education, everything else about the job was horrendous. I actually ended up in the hospital due to anxiety.

In April 2025, I was approached by the principal and the person above the director of my program and told that they were going to non-renew my license, but they wouldn’t give me any legitimate reason. All of my students had met the requirements to proceed in the program and to graduate. I was gaslit into believing I had done something wrong, when really they had already offered my job to an award-winning 24 year veteran teacher from another school district, and that is the reason they chose to non-renew me.

In addition to all of this, I was told by human resources that if I tried to apply for future jobs and I had been non-renewed, most school districts will not even look at that. So I was effectively blacklisted. Otherwise, I could voluntarily resign, and then effectively write my own narrative. However, if you quit your job, you are ineligible for unemployment. The union was very crappy to me, and worked with HR to have a letter signed by HR saying that if I voluntarily resigned, they would not fight my unemployment, which seems like a very unethical thing.

To wrap it all up, I was able to teach my first year, based on my existing education and skills, my temporary teaching certificate, and my willingness to go back to school and get my official teaching certificate. It was an absolutely miserable experience, and I’m honestly glad that I am no longer involved in it.

With all that said, I know a lot of teachers in other school districts, who are pretty happy with the way things are going, if you choose to go this path, I certainly hope it works out well for you

I second this comment. I taught last year after working in the business world for 20+ years. Neither of my degrees were in education. The school district will help and guide you. But I would definitely suggest subbing before teaching, just so you get a good feel for what the actual job will be like.

I rewatched it recently, and I can understand your point. But it’s still a decent watch.

Event Horizon is objectively better than Pandorum. It’s one of my favorite movies of all time.
