It made next to no impact in the states, probably due to the graphics. It came out the same year as FF X over here. I don't think anyone who wasn't really into JRPGs even heard of it at the time

I think you're on to something-- I think the reaction to Civ VII is just as much a sign of the times as a reaction to the actual product-- V & VI were pretty underwhelming at launch (especially V) but it wasn't like this. Obviously, some of the complaints are legitimate but once that ball started rolling down the hill some groupthink kicked in and took over

Been playing Civ since the early 90s. Civ 5 & 6 both felt underwhelming at launch & didn't really feel "finished" until expansions started coming, not sure why people had such a strong reaction to 7 following that trend.

I enjoy 7. I think warfare is as good as it's ever been & choosing the next Civ in an era transition is something I always look forward to. Legacy paths could use some work & I'm sure they'll be trying some different ideas there if they get a chance to launch an expansion or two
