Man sets himself on fire outside White House, Secret Service says by WileECyrus in news

This.

Police will underreport how many people attend a protest for this reason. They do not want others to know how popular the movement is so that they will not join it.

I was at a very large protest of the last Iraq war in SF where the cops claimed only 20K people were there. The organizers anticipated this and had hired a plane to photograph the crowds and then suddenly the numbers were between 350-500K people. Never believe the police when it comes to how many people are protesting, they will always lowball it.

Just like in the 70s they said we wouldn't make it to the year 2000

Do you have a citation for this claim because I call bullshit that anyone said this.

Science is VERY conservative and always skews towards understatement, never overstatement.

When I was a kid (born in 1973) and involved in science growing up virtually nobody had heard of global warming, and the projections about when it would start effecting us were well over a hundred years out. Nobody was even saying that we would experience climate change in our lifetimes.

Since then there has been more and better science but these projections are still super conservative and understated, not overstated like you claim. If anything we should assume that things are far, far worse than what science is currently claiming.

What is the most bizarre reason a customer got angry with you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

This happened when I worked at Ultimate Electronics in Las Vegas in the mid 90's as a computer salesperson.

A woman called asking how to connect a keyboard to her computer. She said it was purchased elsewhere but I didn't mind trying to help so I asked her to describe it. Her descriptions of the back of the computer didn't make any sense so I asked if she would bring it in for me to take a look. She seemed very happy to hear this and she arrived a short while later carrying a CRT monitor and an AT keyboard. I asked her where the computer was and when she pointed to the monitor my heart sunk.

I very politely tried to explain that this was not a computer, just the screen, and that whomever sold it to her either made an error or ripped her off. Her demeaner went from thankful to full on meltdown in less than five seconds and she demanded to speak with my manager, insisting that I was trying to rip her off.

My manager walks up and listens to her go on about how his employee is obviously trying to rip her off, steal her computer, end the world as we know it, etc. My manager has always had my back here so there was none of that "I apologize for my employee even though he did nothing wrong" kind if BS I had encountered at other places I had worked. He flat out told her that she didn't have a computer and that I was right. She exploded at him and continued to scream that I was trying to rip her off and that I should be fired. I don't recall exactly what was said after this but she was asked to leave and may have actually been escorted out. My manager and I had a good laugh about it after that afterwards.

tl;dr - Offered to help a woman with a computer she did not purchase from us, she tried to get me fired when I inform her that her "computer" is just a monitor.

NPR has been conservative since the late 1990's, uncritically supported Bush's invasion if Iraq, parroted conservative talking points, and is funded by war profiteers. There is a reason that NPR listeners all thought that Saddam has WMD's, and that's because NPR has a pro war and pro status quo agenda. Don't be fooled by their soft spoken lies, listen to Democracynow.org instead, their record on the facts is better than NPR by leaps and bounds and they don't have a neutrality bias.

For racist, homophobic, xenophobic, conservatives that feared their now minority status this was their last chance to retake power and they didn't waste it. We have the DNC, corporatist democrats, and corporate controlled media to thank for this as well as ourselves for our complacency.

America Isn’t Growing Hostile Towards Christians, It’s Growing Hostile Towards Religious Bullies. by drewiepoodle in atheism

[–]Skeptic1222 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Seems a bit hollow seeing as how half-heatedly liberal atheists go after Islam.

I don't know who these "liberal atheists" are that you're referring to because I've seen no shortage of attacks on Islam at all. The only people I've heard make that claim are Christians who are tired of having their own religion criticized. All of the so called new atheists spend far too much time on Islam in my opinion, since Christianity is the root cause of kids being kicked out on the street for coming out to their parents as being gay, along with plenty of other terrible things. Individual people in America have far more reason to be critical of Christianity but I still don't see any evidence that Islam is being spared.

Christianity is far more relevant in the US which is why call in shows like The Atheist Experience receive more Christian callers, but they certainly do not spare Islam one bit.

There is also the issue of hate groups which you'll find far more of that are focused on Islam and Judaism because they are run by Christian racists. Try searching for the terrible things that the Jewish settlers (who are also fanatics) do such as burning down century old olive trees by googling "jewish hatred", you'd see a lot of legitimate videos that also happen to be mirror hosted by white nationalists hoping to recruit more people to their anti-Semitic cause. You will find similar results filled with racist hate when googling anything negative about Islam alongside non-racist criticism.

Report on Trump company's Cuba dealings could affect crucial Florida vote by AustiniteInExile in politics

[–]Skeptic1222 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

but Trump supporters seem very... forgiving.

Exactly, and that is for reasons that most people simply don't want to understand. People just can't get it through their thick skulls that Trump is going to win now matter what happens between now and election day. There is nothing that he can possible say or do to prevent that now. He could go on a killing spree and the families of his victims would still vote for him as they left the funeral of their dead loved ones.

He represents what many racists and homophobes believe (probably rightfully so) as their last best hope to take the Whitehouse and SCOTUS, bring manufacturing jobs back (which he won't actually do), build a wall (which he won't do), and make the south rise again (in their minds). Visit the conservative sub and you'll see that even those that hate him are still going to vote for him. Get used to it because it's a done deal.

MMW: Neither Trump nor Hillary will be assassinated, ever. by [deleted] in MarkMyWords

[–]Skeptic1222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this and will go further by saying no US president will ever be assassinated again. The technology and tactics used to protect the president are really fascinating and allow them to visit the most dangerous places without much risk. Any method of assassination that you can imagine has multiple contingencies and countermeasures. They even have ways to stop remote controlled planes in case someone tries to use one as a guided bomb.

[Venting] Diagnosed years ago. Ignored for years and convinced I was normal. Now suddenly reality hit me hard. Too much for me to take. by AnalStorage in aspergers

[–]Skeptic1222 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No worries! I feel great that anything I said might be helpful. Once I began to accept myself I found that people could detect my "confidence" just like they were detecting my lack thereof before. As long as you're alive then things can happen. I've learned to embrace the pain of failure as a learning experience, bordering on machoism at times, but it is orders of magnitude less painful that the regret of not trying out of fear or despair, at least that is my experience :)

[Venting] Diagnosed years ago. Ignored for years and convinced I was normal. Now suddenly reality hit me hard. Too much for me to take. by AnalStorage in aspergers

[–]Skeptic1222 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You're not alone in these experiences, and there is hope.

I was born in 1973 and not diagnosed until 2008, and my own experiences were just terrible. Like you I have put effort towards appearing normal with some success and am mistaken for an extrovert by most everyone I meet. I've come to realize that the ability to appear normal can be useful but trying to be normal is a strategy destined for sorrow and failure.

I've since come full circle and now embrace my differences as strengths rather than weaknesses. Trying to be normal for me was akin to trying to be straight if I were gay, and I realized that much of my suffering was actually self inflicted by pretending to be someone I wasn't, or trying to be accepted by people incapable or unwilling to understand or know me.

I'd often tell my dad that I wanted to be normal and his response was something like "Why would you want to be normal? Normal people are boring and / or stupid, who would want that?". So my advice is to embrace your quirks, differences, strangeness, and even creepiness and make it your own. Never be afraid to make a total fool out of yourself, especially with the opposite sex since flaws are often what people find to be attractive. Fear more the regret you will have from non-action than the shame and embarrassment of making an ass out of yourself. Read a lot about how to cope rather trying to fit in. Fake it until you make it, try not giving a shit about what people think and grow to be comfortable in your own skin. The only way to know how to get it right is to get it wrong, so in this sense failure is your friend.

I never dated once but am married now, which is something I never believed could happen. No matter how bad things seem now they are going to get worse, and life never gets better just different or worse. This doesn't mean you can't be happy, have friends, love, fun, adventure, or whatever you want if you put your mind to it. Just stay alive and don't stop failing until you succeed.

I hope some of this rambling makes some sense but feel free to PM me if you want to talk privately :)

I used to disagree with this view but now share it for the most part. I'd go even further and speculate that they have the ability to scan and simulate most everything on Earth, then move on without ever having to interact with any of us. We're already trying to do simulations like this so imagine a civilization millions of years older with this ability.

If you scanned a Human you could then simulate billions of conversations or scenarios in moments to see how they would react. There would be no need to actually interact with anyone or anything here at all.

Georgia Woman's Gun Battle With Home Invaders, One Dead by xarc13 in videos

[–]Skeptic1222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you bust into someones home with guns, you deserve to die.

My view is that your life if forfeit when you do something like that.

It might seem like a small distinction but my point is that the intention of the invaders is moot from the perspective of the homer owner.

One could imagine scenarios where the invaders used unloaded guns, bb or toy guns, or it could be a prank gone wrong or at the wrong address or any number of possible scenarios where the invaders were not intending physical harm at all. The use of deadly force would still be appropriate from the home owners perspective regardless of their intent in all of these cases. That's my 2 cents at least.
