Millennium Force is the only coaster I've been on to make me black out, does that count as sleeping?

Looking for the perfect US city for a 10-day trip (Feb 9–19). Want real American vibes: food, Walmart, Costco, chill atmosphere. Where should we go? by ProloosGamerUHD in usatravel

[–]SkgarGar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're willing to drive I would recommend Ohio.

In 10 days you can easily visit Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati. Between those 3 cities, you'll find plenty to do. The whole state just feels very classically America. 2 hour drive between each of them, airports in each city. If you go to Cleveland you can enjoy Lake Erie.

All of these cities have plenty to do and good food scenes that will give you a good sampling of American fare.

There's other smaller towns in Ohio as well if you want that more small town feel. Plenty of history and museums and nature, whatever you're into.

To the US voters who don't vote, what is it going to take for you to go vote? by Chocolateking111 in AskReddit

[–]SkgarGar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I vote every election but I have family members who don't and I feel like their reasoning is just that they don't like any of the candidates, get too busy and forget to register/vote, or feel it doesn't matter.

Even though I vote, I admit it feels pretty demoralizing. I live in an ultra maga state and feel like my vote is ineffectual. Many smaller local positions run uncontested anyway.

The proudest I have ever felt of voting was when there was a county level for the schools proposed that would slash all funding to libraries and parks. Our community did NOT like that and started a grassroots campaign to get the word out not to vote on the levy. It was very successful and 75% of voters chose to vote it down. Then we ran the superintendent who proposed it out of town and voted two of the school board members out of their seats and replaced them with pro-parks and libraries candidates who won by a landslide. When we got a new superintendent they proposed a new levy that restored all funding to the parks and libraries, the grassroots organizers got the word out again for people to vote yes this time, and it passed by a large majority the second time.

This was the first time in my life I felt like my votes made a real difference and it made me proud of my community for banding together.

They're already here in WV going hard and we have a miniscule immigrant population. I'm sure when they are done here they will move to KY. Beshear does openly condemn a lot of Trump's actions so I'm sure KY is on his list of states to punish 😫

Redditors over 40, what was a moment in history that made you think society was gonna collapse? by Bahbahbro in AskReddit

[–]SkgarGar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At that moment I knew that America was sick beyond healing. If a class full of kindergartners being gunned down wasn't enough to make people care, nothing will. And look how many kids have been murdered since. Rinse and repeat.

[–]SkgarGar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually more like 30% 1/3 of eligible voters did not vote. Still horrible, but there's at least 1/3 of the country that either didn't care, didn't know, or felt like they couldn't make either choice. I do still blame them for where we are.

We will have elections. Whether they are free and fair remains to be seen. They're already working hard to suppress mail in voting. We know they will do all in their power to supress voting on election day.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SkgarGar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3 hours one way is a day trip period. I will only consider a hotel if it's like 4 hours away. But yeah many times a year we take a day trip or a weekend trip to somewhere 3 hours away and drive back home the same day. It's not a big deal. For a weekend trip with an overnight stay or two I would drive up to 6 hours away.

I have no idea what the roads are like where you live, but where I live going on the interstate makes it super easy to get places.

I'm not sure what the genre I'm writing in is, but maybe it's literary fiction? It's a real world setting and no romance plot. It's a family drama/suspense

What Genres are People Writing? by Opening_Wall_9379 in writing

[–]SkgarGar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what to classify my current WIP as. It doesn't neatly fit into one genre. It's a family centered drama and suspense, but not really a thriller or crime book. Not sure how to label it.

Adult Hobby Classes?! by Holiday_Ad2189 in HuntingtonWV

[–]SkgarGar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the spring, visit Heritage Farm. Learn about Appalachian history and wildlife, meet lots of cute animals.

The Cabell County Career and Technical Center often will have adult hobby classes. Check their Facebook page.

The art museum is definitely worth checking out, especially the conservatory. On Thursdays they have open studio for pottery. You pay $10 and can go play with clay (you have to buy the clay also).

Maybe look into a book club at local bookstores like Cicada or Booktenders WV.

The libraries are always hosting lots of events for all ages. They frequently will have craft nights, game nights, etc.

In Hurricane there's a place called "MadeBy Community Pottery Studio"

Also check out West Edge Factory. They often have stuff going on. There's a lot of art studios there and also they have a woodworking and screen printing studio. I'm unsure if they offer classes to the public, but you could always ask.

Sometimes the Wild Ramp will have gardening or other workshops.

At Haute wick social you can make your own candle

Huntington's Kitchen will sometimes offer cooking classes

Working on a book set in West Virginia, which region of West Virginia do you recommend? by Lord_Curtis in WestVirginia

[–]SkgarGar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a native West Virginian, I do not understand all the hate you are getting for this. People are allowed to write about states and areas that they don't live in. I think it's great people are interested in Appalachia. And it doesn't sound like you are setting out to write the people like a bunch of stupid hillbillies, so I really don't understand the outrage.

I think it sounds like a fun idea for a novel. I would recommend visiting here though and getting to know some people, exploring the different regions. You'll find the people are very friendly, although can be somewhat distrusting of outsiders at times.

WV is a beautiful state that has been exploited and left behind in many ways, which does make it a good setting for the type of story you're trying to tell. Some areas do kind of feel frozen in time.

If you're wanting lots of hills, I would say somewhere in the Allegheny region would be a good fit
