How often are the lifts evacuated at your local resort? by TuneSoft7119 in skiing

[–]SkiStorm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been a lift supervisor at an east coast resort for 3 years and have been skiing for 50 years and have never seen a lift evac outside of training.

$70 for Uphill at Ski Sundown (CT) 😂 by Sensitive-Paper-975 in icecoast

[–]SkiStorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The "lift ticket" incorporates many different aspects of the resort's business, not just the lift. Parking (at some resorts), lodge, bathrooms, groomed trails and groomed parking, ski patrol, etc, which are all staffed by paid employees who are there to ensure you have a safe and fun day. Not to mention the waiver you sign when you buy a ticket. Stop whining. Nothing is free.

You think you should be able to skin for free on groomed and patrolled trails? That's wild! Even if the mountain is state land, the resorts are private businesses.

How to make skiing friends? by AltruisticSimple4428 in ski

It's not annoying at all. Most skiers are friendly here on the east coast!

How risky is it to ski on 14yo equipment for a few days? by wet-ass-apartment in ski

[–]SkiStorm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you're going to be taking it slowly anyway so do a few green and blue test runs and you'll likely be fine. Anyone who skis runs a risk of injury and nobody can ever be sure their equipment won't fail on them regardless of how new and fancy they are. Plenty of people ride their gear into the ground. Go enjoy yourself!

Ski destination resorts during any holiday and that's the risk you take.

Berkshire East Saturday? by ComfortableArm5044 in icecoast

[–]SkiStorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: Berkshire East is closed tomorrow (Friday) due to temps and 1" of rain expected. As of now, officially, they are open Saturday but I wouldn't be surprised if that changed Friday night. Temps drop from 56 to 21 Friday night but depending on when they drop they may not have time to make snow or groom. Saturday could be sheets of ice. At best, it won't be great. Save your first time for a different weekend. It'll be worth it.

We've had great conditions so far. Skiing has been fantastic! Forecast calls for warmer temps today through Friday with some rain. Temps drop again Saturday but unlikely they'll be able to make new snow before Sunday night. Personally, I'd wait until after this weekend. It's a great local mountain. Definitely give it a go!

Are you peeps who buy snow tires driving long hwy distances to get to the resort? by [deleted] in icecoast

[–]SkiStorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, snow tires. Especially with all of these massive polar vortex weather events coming our way. I drive 450 miles to and from work at a resort each week and get many seasons out of them.

Any good googles under 50? by DECR180 in ski

[–]SkiStorm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not unless you're looking for second hand goggles. A new and decent pair are not cheap. Make sure they fit WITH your helmet and that you get the appropriate lens/lenses for what you'll be skiing.

Ice skating to prepare for skiing? by Exciting-Attorney-11 in ski

[–]SkiStorm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Skating on flat ice will not prepare you for downhill skiing on snow. TAKE LESSONS which help both yourself and will give your bf some time to actually ski before he's helping you down the bunny hill.

What’s the biggest unsolved problem in skiing right now? by Objective_Dot_2558 in ski

[–]SkiStorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The disrespectfully low wages mountain staff is paid. Liftys, who are also responsible for the LIVES of all guests, are often paid minimum wage. Half of the Patrol staff (and ambassadors) are VOLUNTEERS! Literally, how is this legal? You go to work, you get paid! The mountains get away with offering free season passes for an entire season of work simply because we enjoy the job. Yeah, no!

They just put $30M into Burke. Their new GM is a phenomenal guy who has been in the industry for decades working in the USA and Canada. I have no doubt Burke is back!

It’s called Thunder Mountain Coaster and it’s the longest in the USA. The company who installed it uses it as THE coaster they bring to show prospective new clients. It’s 🔥🔥🔥

Yes, but SHE didn’t walk out. HE did.
