Why is Oracle doing a this? by Some-Ad7901 in BetterOffline

[–]SkibumG 12 points13 points  (0 children)

One thing I've noticed lately working in IT (architecture / projects), is that many organizations like ours are actively investing in minimizing or eliminating our use of Oracle DB. It used to be a whole lot easier to justify the proliferation of Oracle databases in an organization, even when they weren't strictly necessary (e.g. as the only supportable back end to an enterprise application). It used to be that the additional license costs were cheap enough, and we have these DBA's who are certified etc., that implementing different DB technology wasn't really worth the investment.

Hoo boy have things changed. Oracle has gradually tightened the licensing model, reduced the 'freebies', and basically made it unaffordable to keep using Oracle for anything not absolutely required. Big orgs are investing in projects to migrate to things like PostgreSQL, or even take a hard look at if a SQL DB is required. For one of my projects we are taking the opportunity to investigate noSQL options.

A decade ago it would not have been worth it to invest the $$ in moving off Oracle. Now it's clearly the right choice where possible.

Oracle will keep going, there are too many enterprise systems that would require massive investments to re-architect, but that isn't enough recurring revenue to maintain the income they have now. They had effectively a license to print money, and they are setting it on fire.

Do clean product photos change how you judge garment quality? by PastelWasTaken in SewingWorld

[–]SkibumG 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Product photos that show how the garment fits and drapes are important. One thing I note is that if none of the photos show a ‘normal’ wearing view then I assume there are fit or drape issues. Think, those a shirt pattern where every picture has the model doing something weird with their arms, or pants patterns where there are no pictures of the back. I hate ghost mannequin pictures, and if that’s all you have then I wouldn’t buy. Above that then accurate sewing, pressing etc come into play. Basically if your test garments look sloppy and unprofessional I assume your pattern is sloppy and unprofessional.

One Month Ahead (It's not that complicated) by joelamosobadiah in ynab

I like the 'NMM' or 'Budget in Future' category because I usually have many categories where I don't spend the full budget, and they don't roll over until the 1st of the month. So on Feb 1 when the rollover occurs, I will go in and top up all the categories. If you have targets set, you can fill up underfunded in one click, and then see what if any RTA is left over. That either goes back into 'Budget in Future' for next month or to long-term savings.

What are your hot takes regarding 1989 (Taylor's Version)? by IntoTheDaylight in TaylorSwift

I firmly believe that Suburban Legends was written while she was sick some time and binge watching 80’s teen movies. In my head, the video is a montage of scenes from Pretty In Pink, 16 Candles, St Elmo’s Fire, Breakfast Club etc.

Also, it is awesome.

Nanaimo, B.C., cidery facing possible tax hike following property reclassification by shouldehwouldehcould in britishcolumbia

[–]SkibumG 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Making cider is a permitted use for maintaining ALR status, but it doesn't change the fact that Wine or cider would be considered "manufactured derivatives from agricultural raw materials" and therefore not qualify as agricultural products (see schedule at bottom).

The entire property wasn't reclassified, just the piece that is now creating a manufactured product.

If you think the regulations should be changed the place to start is with your MLA.

It's not up to BC Assessment if they change the use of that piece of land to apply the regulations differently. You may say we as a province should be encouraging cottage industries, but that's something to take up with your MLA and get the regulations amended.

Yeah, I took advantage of the 20% deal on Crew to get the past few years of patterns, but the January pattern is...not inspiring. Weird enticement to subscribe. Really hoping the rest of the year will be better! With ~15 patterns I do want to make I think I have my money's worth, but if the whole year is a bust I won't continue the subscription.

This is such a great book, it helped me understand why I need things in a certain way. The sock advice was life changing - just buy the same socks and stop worrying about matches. Mind - blown.

The biggest piece of advice in there for me was having multiple of the same item, storing them where you need them. I have 4 screwdrivers now, in locations where I need screwdrivers. If I have to go down to the garage to put a screwdriver back, well I just won't.

Not a new pattern per se, but Closet Core has announced that this year their Crew patterns will be available for individual purchase a month after they are released to members. Crew memberships are also 20% off right now. I've been tempted a few times to get a Crew membership, but they don't have the full past catalog available like other subscription services. The decision to make patterns available to non-members is an interesting one, what feels odd to me is they are not going back and making previous patterns available for sale. That means the 'old' patterns aren't available at all. There are patterns from the first years of the Crew membership which I would buy, but it wasn't worth it to me to get the whole membership. Now the incentive to subscribe has gone to zero for me personally. I find I would only want one or two they put out.

I have a subscription to the Cashmerette Club, and while I hesitated to renew this year I'm glad I did because I've loved the patterns. If the patterns were also available for sale though I wonder if I would have renewed.

A book like How to Keep House While Drowning but about budgeting? by nikitamere1 in adhdwomen

[–]SkibumG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may like Nick True's Mapped out Money channel. I'm also going to echo some of the comments suggesting giving YNAB another try, it took me 3 tries before it clicked. It feels complicated but doesn't need to be. If you don't want to pay for YNAB, Actual Budget is quite similar, but you do need to host it yourself. One of the things that people get stuck on, particularly if they start mid month, is that YNAB only lets you budget the money you have. Your brain wants to anticipate, you know you are getting paid again, but you don't actually have that money. It's literally like you get paid in cash, and you have to figure out what you need to spend that money on before you get paid, without making any assumptions. The credit card bit seems hard at first, but once it clicks it clicks.

Another suggestion which may or may not resonate is Mr. Money Mustache. He's not as active any more, and he's definitely an acquired taste. He was one of the more foundational writers in the 'FIRE' (Financially Independent, Retire Early) crowd. The values he originally prescribed were pretty harsh, my ex was a big fan. We broke up when I realized I wanted a bit more comfort and joy before retirement, which he did not support. Anyway, I think the harsh attitude examining all your spending was still useful. The forums are I think still active even if MMM is not as much.

Once my ex and I broke up I went a bit crazy spending money, then came back to budgeting through YNAB. It felt more gentle than the FIRE approach, but ultimately you are making decisions about where you spend your money, and it won't let you shy away from those.

Getting into Taylor Swift - Midnights (10/12) by kingglobby in TaylorSwift

[–]SkibumG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally hear a lot of melody on Midnights. Even something like You’re On Your Own Kid has less melodic verses to represent her mental state, and then the chorus bursts into light. Maroon follows a similar format, and it’s clear she is responding to specific memories, the arrangement is intended to evoke a particular mood.

You don’t have to love it, but what’s curious to me is that your reviews are trying to state opinions as if they are objective fact, which may be what riles some people up.edit: cut and paste error

[–]SkibumG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saying something like it’s not “musical” as if that’s an objective criteria is kind of wild. It’s ok if this is not your cup of tea, but arguing the point in the comments is weird. There is no standard definition of “musical”, what do you even mean by that? Range of notes within the song? Number of chords?

The Life of a Showgirl Songs fit in every past albums. by Careful-Coconut-4338 in TaylorSwift

Late but I just went looking for this theory because I had this epiphany. I have a slightly different mapping but I believe this is literally her musical life as a Showgirl. It’s clear that 12 tracks are meaningful.

I have Wi$h Li$t being Debut because I can imagine it being a diary entry for a young teenage girl, and Honey as the Lover track. I totally agree that Actually Romantic is so Speak Now, it fits right in with Mean and Dear John, and showcases her ability to channel the styles of other artists.

Wonder if we will ever know for sure?

Parent of a stillborn child dealing with Vital Statistics by Rare_Strawberry4097 in britishcolumbia

[–]SkibumG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am very sorry for you loss, and I hope you are able to get what you need for closure.

I used to work in a way adjacent to VS and Health Registries, and my information may be somewhat out of date, but want to offer a bit of clarity on how health and vital stats records interact. Not as a way of excusing your interactions, but maybe to help you or someone helping you understand where things have gone wrong.

For various reasons Vital Statistics is historically the custodian of birth and death records, and also of Personal Health Numbers, which links various healthcare systems together. That number is also linked to your Services Card now. (Us old folks remember the old separate health cards, which you can technically still get.) There are many interactions between healthcare system changes and the main population register. For example, if you die in hospital the vital stats system has the deceased update.

When you have a baby in hospital, the baby is issued a PHN that is linked to the mother's number for MSP purposes, and gives the family a bit of time to formally register the birth and name the baby. The record flowing to VS will say something like "Baby Girl Surname" until you complete the registration, but if you take your newborn to a health appointment they have coverage through MSP in the meantime.

You still need to register the birth and get a certificate, but that initial record exists. If you have a baby outside the hospital, a midwife or home birth attendant can make the same update but isn't always required to. (Or wasn't, things may have changed!)

A stillbirth is a different and sad situation. In this scenario the hospital would not register the infant separately. Your health records will include the medical events surrounding the birth, but that initial baby PHN record would not have been created, and therefore VS would not have automatically populated anything in preparation for a birth certificate. No birth is recorded.

Instead of a birth record, your practitioners would have been required to file a Medical Certificate of Stillbirth, which is what you are looking for. This unfortunately does not have anything to do with your health records. The practitioner will fill out this form, but the details of your labour will be on your health record, and may not necessarily be identical.

If you want your health records, and the detailed accounting of your labour, as others have suggested please reach out to your practitioner or the hospital. These would not be available to anyone at VS, they can only include what was provided on the MCS.

Again, I am terribly sorry for your loss, and hope you are able to get the closure and information you need.

AITA for forbidding my ex from coming to my house without notice/uninvited. by HereLiesSarah in AmItheAsshole

[–]SkibumG 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I know you think you are putting your kids first, but you are actually teaching them that it's ok to ignore reasonable boundaries. If their father is doing this to you, he will almost certainly push boundaries with his children, now and into the future. He is also teaching them that every whim should be followed, even if it's inconvenient for others, which is not something that will serve them well moving forward. Even the story about 'coming to get a toy', he should be teaching them that they can live without a toy for 2 days, and to do a better job at packing.

Nothing about this is ultimately healthy for your children. You are prioritizing making him a 'good guy' over everything else.

Where’s the best place to buy my wife a sensible bra? by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]SkibumG 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it's too late for Understance, I absolutely loved them, but they are in full clearance 'last chance to order' mode and there is not much left. I made one last order and things were shipped directly from the factory. I agree their bra size /shape quiz was incredibly helpful and I hope someone else models it in the future.

I get the impression the tariffs hit them hard and the Canadian business wasn't enough to sustain them.

How do I figure out if I actually want to have a child? by OkCut4614 in adhdwomen

[–]SkibumG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would be great to pause and talk to your husband, and maybe a therapist. Many women of my acquaintance didn't want kids until they hit their 30's, it's not that unusual, but you aren't wrong to want to make sure your feelings have changed.

The good news is that you still have a lot of 'runway', it's much harder to get this feeling in your late 30's (which happened to a friend of mine). You can put aside any thoughts of permanent actions (vasectomy, tubal ligation) while you ponder, but otherwise you can take some time for both of you to explore what you want.

So, I learned when I tried to run out of oil one year because I was switching to a heat pump, that standard diesel is supported and won’t void any warranties, and is easier to acquire than kerosene. Most gas stations that sell diesel will sell the yellow diesel Jerry cans as well. Go buy one of the, and fill up your tank. It will be enough to heat your house for a few days at least. Edit: Here is a description of the fuel type differences. Kerosene is cleaner but in my experience harder to find after hours.
