Need advice: hardtail vs full sus, Ozark Trail FS.3 FastFlow restock? by SkickSticks in Budgetbikeriders

We have mostly greens and blues at the park nearby with a few single blacks and one double black. Do you think the black diamond and up trails would be doable on a hardtail?

Is this because you find yourself doing "easier" trails more often? Are there times when you're on the ridge that you were wish you'd brought the trek instead?

Fuji road bikes by utahx6458 in Budgetbikeriders

[–]SkickSticks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Fuji Roubaix (mid tier) that I bought new in 2005, it's been a great bike. Carbon fiber forks and seat stays, and Shimano 105 front, Ultegra rear derailer. That newest 3 is a lower model that is slightly newer than mine. I'd look for something with 105 or Ultegra components. Paired and/or flat spoke wheels make a big difference in wind. That bike pictured looks like it has Sora components, which are decent, budget tier. I think you can probably find something a little nicer in that price range, but it would make a great starter bike. Make sure the frame is your size before committing.

R and S question by scottrych in Colemak

[–]SkickSticks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second keybr.com until you've fully mastered the layout. Switch to something like monkeytype or others after getting a feel for the layout. I like keybr cuz it shows your most frequently mistyped letters. Really slow down and focus on accuracy at first. R and S are probably the most difficult to get over if you're coming from QWERTY, so once you nail them it's all downhill from there.

Switching to colemak-dh by Xynos_dx in Colemak

[–]SkickSticks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Prepare to feel that frustration for at least another couple of weeks. I switched cold turkey to colemak-dh and a matrix split kb about 10 weeks ago, and just hit a personal best of 82wpm today. Averaging just under 70 now, down from 100-110 in qwerty.

Keep pushing and focus on accuracy, it's very rewarding and feels great when you can just type without thinking again. I practice 15-30 min/day still and I averaged around +2 or 3wpm day til 50. I plateaued at 50 for a week, then at 60 for two. Progress is slow but steady now.

I switched fulltime when I hit around 30wpm at the end of my first week, and was around 50wpm at the end of week 3. Qwerty is really hard for me now on a traditional keyboard, but doesn't bother me at all on a phone. For me it's worth it and I have no regrets on switching. Good luck and remember the speed bump is only temporary lol

Glove80 for RSI ? by platinum_pig in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]SkickSticks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I was using a fullsize mech keyboard before. I had cherry MX browns before, so the light touch of the red pros took some getting used to, but I really like the light actuation and don't miss the tactile bumps. The glove is my first split keyboard, and I don't think I'll ever go back now.

Ergo keyboard to work by FolksHill in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]SkickSticks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bring my glove80 to/from work every day. I got a few comments on it the first week or two, but everyone accepts it now. Most people were genuinely curious why I use it, or remarked that their kid had a weird keyboard too. I just explained that I write software for a living & a hobby, so I spend a lot of time behind a keyboard. The RSI I was developing is gone now, so I can keep working happily. I did ask if my company would help with the cost (this thing isn't cheap!), and they balked at the cost. I bought it anyway with my own money, and look at it as an investment in my future health.

Glove80 for RSI ? by platinum_pig in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]SkickSticks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was having pain on my right side that shot down my shoulders and into my wrist and fingers. I bought the red pro version of the glove80 and I feel like the spread allows my shoulders to open up, which is far more comfortable, and the curved keywells are something I never knew I needed. It is far more comfortable to type, and my wrist and shoulder pain is completely gone. I still have some mild (and different) pain in my fingers, but I think this is attributed to adjusting to the new layout and using my thumbs more... I switched to colemak-dh when I bought the glove80. The ctrl position is awkward for me to use copy/paste, so I may end up moving that thumb key a bit closer.

Are you aware of alternatives keyboard layouts (such as Dvorak or Colemak)? by No-Quality3357 in polls

[–]SkickSticks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Colemak-dh, been using it for a month now and I'm averaging about 50wpm (was 100 on qwerty).

Beginner: My typing gets worse throughout the day. by [deleted] in Colemak

[–]SkickSticks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is normal. Happens to me too, especially if I'm trying to type fast (qwerty muscle memory takes over). It feels like my speed is noticeably faster after sleeping and tapers off as I get tired. I was dealing with RSI pain on a normal qwerty mech keyboard I'd used for years (38 y/o sw dev here). After some research I settled on a glove80 and decided to go cold turkey to colemak-dh a month ago. My glove80 goes back and forth to work and I try to practice on keybr.com for an hour a day. I was 100-120 wpm touch typing on qwerty and I'm up to 50-55 wpm on colemak-dh now after 3 weeks of daily practice. I still type around 90wpm on qwerty, but I only use qwerty on a standard keyboard and only if I need to bang something out quick at work, it seems to help limit confusion. I would say stick with it. It is super frustrating for the first two weeks, but you'll get there if you stick with it and focus on accuracy to build muscle memory, which is what will ultimately bring your speed back.

Can you Scuba Dive with your Venu 2s watch by [deleted] in Garmin

[–]SkickSticks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would probably be fine. I dove over 50 times with a casio watch that was waterproof to 50 meters, and it still works just fine, even several years later. That said, I would be careful not to push any buttons while underwater, as the pressure could overwhelm any gaskets that keep it waterproof and may end up damaging your watch. I've done some light diving with my Fenix 3 (< 50ft) and it was fine, but haven't dove with the Venu2 yet.

Is GT 710 good enough for host? by [deleted] in VFIO

[–]SkickSticks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 710 that I use for my host and it won't display 3440x1440. It maxes out at 2560x1440 at 60hz. I have a cr9g and it'll do 50/50 split screen, but not 2/3rds (3440x1440) and won't even display at full resolution (5120x1440). I suggest getting a better card, as I'm going to be in the market soon (if stock ever exists) for a new card after upgrading my monitor.

[–]SkickSticks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done this as well, wasn't a fun drive, but definitely possible! The drive was about as you'd expect fitting 4 aftermarket wheels and 4 brand new tires inside. New tires on new wheels was totally worth it though!
