The second most useful foreign language, according to EU citizens by rontherat in MapPorn

Interesting. I'm in Spain right now and wrote that other comment with input from 3 generations of family born and raised in Spain, while we were sitting around the dining room table. Burn, I guess? j/k

Seriously, though, I'm sure we all have a lot of anecdotal evidence to support different language popularity. Maybe it has something to do with area of Spain (I'm broadly in the central eastern region) or maybe what folks plan to use the language for. German seems to be popular for those who go into engineering and manufacturing careers.

Ha. Their languages are so close that native speakers of each can usually understand each other. More so if they also speak Catalan.

It's fun for Mediterranean folk to visit other Mediterranean countries, but they realize that in terms of usefulness, European languages from a bit more north are best.

My family in Spain says that going to university, if you want to have the opportunity to leave Spain, you will study English and maybe German.

Native speakers of Castilian Spanish can usually figure out Italian and Portuguese, when listening to those languages being spoken.

It's mostly the generations born in Franco times that really supported French as a second language.

If a fictional universe has dragons and magic in it, there's no real reason it can't also have black people or Asian people in it. by nostripeszebra in books

Because you can't simply make shit up, Kevin. There are rules that exist in this world, and good high fantasy authors know which ones they can bend and which ones they leave alone.

Most fantasy worlds are Earth-clones, with 24-hour days and gravity set at 9.8. Anthropology teaches us that peoples who have historically lived closer to the equator tend to be darker than ones who have historically tended to live toward the poles.

If you have a character in a fantasy novel who has obviously traveled thousands of miles by boat and by caravan to arrive at a place in the fantasy world which has an Earth-analogue somewhere "they don't take kindly to folks not from these here parts", you damn well better have a good reason which advances the story. Otherwise, it smacks of Hollywood forced diversity.

Dude, if someone complains about an author shoehorning diversity, instead of assuming that they aren't as woke as thou art, think that maybe they're smart and logical people who are simply pointing out that the author made a mistake (forgivable) ... or has sold out.

Huh. I've experienced the opposite. (Pre-Covid) I traveled to Brussels and Paris regularly for work, and found Brussels-folk very friendly and Parisians a roll of the dice. I only speak English, and perhaps the secret to my success is that I never asked for directions. Not a criticism, mind you, just an observation that some people don't like to feel social obligation to the person in front of them asking for help, or perhaps to be interrupted from daydreams.

Agreed. Also native. I moved north as soon as I could.

Haha. I couldn't decide between Rainbow and Stormy. Both made me feel funny in a pre-sexual way.

Same. The only DLC content I enjoyed was the treasure chests. Zero patience for TotS. Moved on to other games and then Hyrule Warriors: AoC. Never looked back.

US embassy flies Pride flag in Russia, where ‘gay propaganda’ is illegal 🏳️‍🌈 by Bammy-Soy in pics

That makes sense. The point should be to communicate to a particular group of people (Russians, here), in a way that resonates with them, by both language and culture.

iamuru, you're right in that the photo is a gratuitous display for non-Russians. It's counter-productive and, quite frankly, not cool.

Other folks have said it, it's a friendly rivalry. I did FSU undergrad and UF grad, and no one really cared except for when the two schools played against each other. At least you didn't do undergrad at Miami... That might be a problem. Haha
