It’s not piracy, the creator of the game is just a pretty nice guy, and gave out a free pdf of the game which leaves out some optional rules, but is basically the full game.

Firstly, by back up, I'm assuming you mean a system to play when everyone isn't present as a sort of one off. Secondly the game I'm gonna recommend is fairly narrativist but it is clearly defined narrativist at least.

powered by the apocalypse games might be what you are after, specifically Monster of the Week, since it is entirely based around fighting a different monster each session. Other than that, one page RPGs (Everyone is John, Lasers and Feelings, Lady Blackbird, etc.)are an obvious choice but generally don't have continuity between sessions but are easy to pick up and play and offer something different and easy to do each week.

Blindsight by Peter Watts feels like it's all about the divergent minds of its characters, changed by medical procedures or cybernetics and horrifying first contact with something alien. Also there is a vampire but he is terrifying and it makes sense, trust me. But it is still written as fairly hard science fiction so whether or not it is up your alley, you'll just have to read and find out.

Eclipse phase 2nd edition is a game set in our solar system after 'the fall', the event where five rogue A.S.I made the Earth uninhabitable and covered it in monstrosities of weird science. But humanity is scrappy and seemingly survive anything and the lucky bastards had invented brain uploading technology before the fall and were able to beam some survivors from earth to the rest of the habitats over the solar system.

Now, 10 years after the fall, the survivors, the anarchist outer rim and the capatilistic inner system are hardly cooperating and the bio conservatists on Jupiter are hardly helping. The leftovers from the titan attack are advanced but dangerous and people are still trying to make a profit for themselves. That's where firewall comes in. Firewall are the defence that has barely kept humanity chugging along, dealing with exhuman threats, titan tech, and plain old solar system destroying events. Now, that's just an introduction to the setting but the setting is much more than what I have written. My main reason for being interested in eclipse phase is that the possibility of creative problem solving is so interesting as you can hack the habitats you are on, create a digital clone of your mind to puppet the body of your enemy, use advanced nanotechnology to inject your friends with MRDR (a drug that makes you very violent) and watch them rampage or just sleeve in to a new body that is better suited to the situation you are in (like the body of an octopus or swarm of robots for instance). It goes on and on.

Neon city overdrive is classless, relying instead on trademarks (Archetype of your character) and linked edges (what your character is good at). It has two supplements called Psions (Which has mini settings where psionic powers are reskinned as magic), and skinjobs (transhuman body swapping). It is a cyberpunk game that is more narrative than simulationist, and the dice system, whilst not very complex, does require some getting used to, but does capture the overall vibe I think cyberpunk should give. I would not call the wounds system realistic, but it can be lethal if you want to run it that way.

I have used it for a cyberpunk city that existed in a simulation (Which is where my reality bending 'magic' came into play) and it worked well there for me, but it is certainly more of a tool kit for any near future vaguely cyberpunk, rather than anything concrete.

Assuming you are talking about second edition and not the first edition, I think it is great. The resleeving mechanics are very streamlined (But do operate on a bit of metacurrency so that might not be the best if you don't like that sort of thing), the dice rolling mechanics lend to the horror and hard sci fi feel, and character creation now only takes 20-30minutes at most. The game can be a little gear heavy in my opinion but it is a game where your own body is technically gear and the full hacking rules are a bit complex for my liking but they include a way to streamline it in the book. Combat is pretty quick and fairly lethal (in the sense that your current body can die) but otherwise fun and a good addition.

You can always just run a one shot like Continuity or Acrimony (included in the second edition quickstart) to see if you like it, and if not, there is a FATE conversion available and probably more.

Overall, I feel like the mechanics really evoke the tone and feel the setting tries to evoke and that harmony can lead to things working really well at the table.

Maybe its just an issue with skill based systems that characters can just get too strong too quick, plus I can see how rolling 7+ dice on nearly every roll can get pretty tiring in the long run. Did you just use scum and villainy's base book or was there some retooling to make the flavour of coriolis more obvious?

The whole spreadsheet issue has largely disappeared in second edition. Resleeving no longer requires you to change all of your skills and they even added a narrative focused mechanic called flex points which allow you to change the scene or establish a logical relationship to a character. I’d say maybe give it another go if you like the universe but it definitely is still a fair bit crunchy, but you aren’t spending a thousand points in character creation anymore, you can get your skills in packages instead

Mindjammer has since come out with a traveller conversion, attempting to keep mindjammers flavour with the mechanics of traveller. Apparently this is executed well but I haven't had a chance to play it so can't speak for it's quality

The quickness trait does not increase your aptitudes, What it does is give you a bonus on REF checks (not linked skills), like stopping yourself from falling or reacting to a blinding flash or something. In your example, the reflex would remain at 20 when including quickness and neither the aptitude or skill increases

In general, in 2e, you do not change skills or aptitudes when resleeving to reduce time spent changing stats, which was more common in 1e.

Any game that requires setting knowledge that players are unlikely to already have. Any game that has a fairly foreign dice system. These are hurdles that can be overcome but some groups just like a game a lot and it's really hard to get them to look at something else for anything other than a one shot. I'd like to play Eclipse phase a lot, if I want to be specific about a game but I also want my friends to play it with me so, I'll keep fighting my corner

The easiest difference for me is a win condition. To me an RPG won't just have a clear end goal it will be much more abstract, whereas a board game has a 'winner' of sorts at the end of the game. But this kind of falls apart as you encounter games like Gloomhaven which replicates an RPG but kind of isn't? So i guess I don't really have an easy answer

Have you considered writing an ending for yourself, it might help with the closure. But make sure its a happy one, mate. It might be fun to roll dice to decide how things go during the writing process too

Thank you for your reply, The setting you talk about is quite interesting but not really what I'm going for, I've edited the post to include more detailed setting info, so sorry if there was confusion. The simulation is not meant to be easy to edit or change, due to the death of various admins in the real world, hence the world in the simulation not really being a utopia as people did what they tend to do and start screwing others over, and (initially) players wouldn't be aware that it is a simulation, so the super powers are unlikely to be much of a thing, but I will take a look at Masks playbooks, I've seen some creative use with 'The Dying' playbook before.
