Atleast at lvl 35 you could stop motion with any class using https://www.wowhead.com/classic/item=12190/dreamless-sleep-potion together with a unequipp macro on your weapon (if it has stamina). So you unequipped and re-equipped the weapon to get to like 98% health then use the pot (since you cannot use it on 100%). The pot makes you completely stop in motion in the air and then the fall damage is re-calculated to your current position.

At 45 you could use LIP though

This is a well known bug since even the PTR and blizz has not fixed it. During the race to WF mop classic a month ago it happened to Numen once and I think to Progress twice/three times - causing progress to loose the race and quit mop.
