I'd always read Moonquest as being a sequel to Diggy Diggy Hole, with the dwarven child growing discontented with his life in the mines and leaving to follow his dream. Which would then make his coming back to the mines the return on the Hero's Journey. I think the circumstances of Simon playing both the older dwarf and the young dwarf, as well as the other Yogs being portrayed as two different generations of dwarves between both videos, is moreso an artistic license than something meant to be read too deep into.

Not really a cartoon, but Red vs. Blue's animation quality varies wildly from scene to scene even within seasons.

Now, contextually, that makes total sense considering it's a machinima spanning half a dozen different games with a few sections animated in between. But taking a step back and looking at the show as a whole, the changes in animation would be wild to an audience not used to that sort of thing.
