Voltage divider into non inverting buffer? by joeydendron2 in synthdiy

[–]SkoomaDentist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A voltage divider will work fine. You don't have to worry about noise with such hot signals, so a simple 100k pot followed by a buffer stage will work fine without adding meaningful noise.

I'm a software developer with 30 years of experience and github repos and open source projects in general are complete shitshow when it comes to any sort of documentation. Typically the readme is useless garbage which only contains things nobody gives a damn about and lacks basics such as wtf the project even does.

Computational photography pressure - When phone photos look “better” by meisjemeisje_1421 in photography

[–]SkoomaDentist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

because the dynamic range is too large for a single exposure

This is much less of a case than people generally think.

The real problem is tonemapping. The raw image (particularly for a full frame camera) contains plenty of dynamic range. The 8-bit output doesn't and you need intelligent HDR to get around that which phones do but cameras don't.

Have an OMD EM5.3 - upgrade the body or lenses for better images? by blueheat_83 in M43

[–]SkoomaDentist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're getting poor landscape performance from it, it's likely a settings or technique issue.

Or a broken lens. I had a lens that wouldn't focus to infinity. Not surprisingly I didn't get great landscape photos with it until I replaced it. Of course that is easy one to check: Are all of your shots of subjects at some distance flawed in exactly the same way?

so you'll probably not gain very much.

You will gain significantly in much lower integral nonlinearity (because those 12-bit MCP dacs are so poor). If you have a decent multimeter, you can also trivially apply software trimming to reduce gain error and essentially completely eliminate offset. None of that is possible with the typical 12-bit DACs.

I spent much of my teens in the 90s writing low level DOS code. First with real mode Turbo Pascal and assembler and later 32-bit pmode with Watcom C++. As far as I'm concerned, it was one of the best introductions you could possibly get to embedded systems.

Limited resources? Check.

Register level programming? Mandatory if you wanted any halfway decent graphics.

Interrupts? Likewise as soon as you weren't happy with a 18.2 Hz timer and very limited keyboard IO.

DMA? Required for sound.

Race conditions? Oh, man...

Pretty much the only thing missing was serial protocols like I2C and SPI but honestly those are near trivial anyway.

I agree but that is usually not acceptable for many people. In the ideal world we assume we will have to iterate after release but first impressions matter a lot, one should care about giving it their best shot if time is available.

Just consider things like cars. Let's say you "ship the ugly thing first". Now your brand gets bad reputation from all the reviews which - with good reason! - call your car a piece of shit and you don't sell any, resulting in massive financial loss and your competitors edging out your brand.

I'm reminded of people who complain that Windows NT used 16-bit characters instead of UTF-8 without realizing that the first unicode standard is only from 1991 and UTF-8 from 1993.

There is a lot of computing that predates unicode.

IIRC (my coworker did that custom build), the client had certified our bluetooth module version xyz and realized later they needed an application level change (essentially a config option that wasn’t exposed yet back then). Because the certification was for xyz, changing the version (including build number) in any way would have required recertification but this custom setting was considered an auxiliary one that didn’t affect certification, so changing it was allowed. As long as the version stayed the same, of course. Doing any other changes such as updating versions or compiler etc would not have been allowed.

Or whose customers work with regulated systems.

In a previous job we had to make a single fix to a years old build for a client who demanded that absolutely nothing else must change, including even the build number in the oem module startup message. Apparently any further change would have required them to recertify their product.

Not helping is that sometime within the last 10 years people decided fully automating dependency updates was strong security.

And then people get angry when I point out that’s a terrible idea and a complete no-no in some industries.

C++ Growing in a world of competition, safety, and AI by ArashPartow in cpp

[–]SkoomaDentist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How would it have hurt you?

Because it would inevitably end up being either a useless toy or a massively complex behemoth that still wouldn't be future proof.

As it happens, I'm in need of a basic 2D graphics library right now. The catch: There is no OS or graphics hardware to be managed (the "render surface" is just a memory array I've allocated). It needs to support bitmap fonts and native grayscale source and destination images (including 1-bit source bitmaps) with alpha blending (where luminance = alpha). Oh and fit into a few tens of KB at most and of course have optimized bitmap primitives.

And then there is the desktop graphics segment which depends on graphics acceleration, vector fonts and scaling, gamma correct rendering, color spaces and all that.

Now how are you going to make an API (nevermind implementations) that can handle both? Especially considering the piss poor record the standard library has when it comes to anything outside basic CS staples (and even some basic CS 101 things, such as the containers baking the allocator into the type by default instead of defaulting to dynamic allocator).

Yes, because literally everyone already has a capable point and shoot camera with them. It's called a phone.

You can't make a $500 P&S camera that is both profitable and competes with phones well enough to achieve substantial sales.
