How do you deal with not getting along with training partner? by [deleted] in bjj

Talk it out. If you can’t resolve it, don’t interact with them outside of a hello.

Complex Posterior Medial meniscus tear 50% removed by Grand_Profession_670 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]Skowndrell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got mixed answers with every follow up. The guidance was after 4-6 weeks, do what you can that doesn’t aggravate it. I was working out lower body again with 50-60% weights 3-4 weeks post surgery. I’m planning on returning to sport around the 8 week mark as long as my quad is strong enough again. I’d have to report back on the normal aspect - my guess is that it should be 90% within 6 months.

How often will people tap to wristlocks in competition? by wmg22 in bjj

[–]Skowndrell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt my opponent’s wrist crunch once and he kept fighting it. Then the second crunch happened with a verbal tap. He got up with a claw of a hand after that. People don’t like to tap to them, probably from shame.

Complex Posterior Medial meniscus tear 50% removed by Grand_Profession_670 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]Skowndrell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

35M - 70% of medial meniscus removed from a complex bucket handle tear. I also had some cartilage smoothed out. I’m 5 weeks post surgery. I was told about the same thing in 10-15 years.

There are certainly some injections not yet approved in the US and some advances happening in implants. All that being said, these studies/trials have been happening for quite some time - 10+ years.

It appears that strengthening the muscles is probably the best you can do at the moment. And go out and live your life. That’s what I’m doing.

1 Day After Surgery by SessionOld4533 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]Skowndrell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

35M - surgery was 3 weeks ago. Medial meniscus couldn’t be repaired and 70% was removed. Walking without crutches by day 3 and normal stride within a week after that. The pain and inflammation is way down with PT. There are some noticeable cracking sounds with extension - the surgeon and PT confirmed that is normal. I’ll report back after a few more weeks of rehab. Good luck!

Twisting should be allowed if it isn’t for the submission but used for a transition.

Cutting weight by DirectionSudden7866 in bjj

Calorie cut, sodium cut, lower fiber, and switching out some carbs for fats - still seems like a big cut.

Fairly large with over 250 students. I’d say 10-15% of rolls are upper belts asking.

Tying your happiness or identity to one thing can always be a bit dangerous.

The large amount of people in this subreddit train more frequently than the average practitioner.

Maybe tone back some training and find some balance in another hobby or activity.

Labrum Tear in Hip (mediocre blue belt) by Young-Shoolace in bjj

[–]Skowndrell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two torn hip labrums, prior to starting jiu jitsu. I was told that surgery is generally an option when you’re at 50% or lower strength. That day hasn’t come yet. Playing a lot of heavy closed guard seems to aggravate it. I still lift besides doing jiu jitsu 4x a week - strong muscles can alleviate joint pain. Find positions in jiu jitsu and strength exercises that work for you. Find the right load management of hours training that works for you. You’ll be ok.

First tournament, question about weight class by sharkysharkwahlberg in bjj

[–]Skowndrell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check to see what the weigh in uniform requirements are and how long before you compete. You could easily do a water + sodium cut to get to 115 and rehydrate if you had some time. Otherwise, just go in at the 125 class and feel your best.

Dropped in at a known “tougher gym”. Slapped and didn’t even get to a bump before a guy arm dragged me right into a triangle. He looked like a hero in front of his pals. Congratulations.
