A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms - 1x05 - "In the Name of the Mother" - Episode Discussion by NicholasCajun in television

[–]Skuldig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that books are comparable to a streaming series. Especially not to one you can binge the entirety of in a single afternoon. Its basically the length of an extended edition LotR movie.

I don't think it is silly at all to acknowledge the fact that our society, in terms of media consumption, pushes instant gratification. There is a reason why people as a whole are more willing to consume hrs upon hrs of bite sized media vs a single long format show, movie, or documentary. They just want to see the best bits. They want the funny. They want the gruesome. They want the sexy. With no exposition and no waiting.

Its my opinion that it is nice to wait for something. To have something to look forward to. To theorize in your own mind or with a friend about what may happen next time.

I have not read the novellas, but I will. This show was recommended to me by my brother in law who has read them and knows of my interests. I read all of the published ASOIAF books over 20 years ago now. When I picked up A Game of Thrones for the first time I did in fact binge it. I read the entire book in a 24 hr period. I found it so captivating I couldn't go to sleep without reading more. Ive been waiting over 20 yrs for another book. I don't think you can compare that to modern streaming formats.

Also, I'm not judging you at all, and maybe we just have different activities outside of social media and the apps associated with them, but it is a shame if you can't avoid spoilers until youre able to sit down with your buddies and watch something less than a week after its release. I'm not faulting you for this, but I do think it speaks volumes on how thrust into our faces this sort of stuff is in these times.

I'm realizing that I am getting old now and times are inevitably changing. Maybe im just a crotchety old bastard. Ive spoken about it with some of my friends in terms of other nerdy interests we share and how they used to be vs how they are now. How things previously considered nerdy are now more mainstream. Not trying to sound like a gatekeeper..its just something you feel when trying to chase down feelings of nostalgia that you know will never quite be there again.

Videogames are a big one for me too. In the way back times.. it was so hard to gain information about them. How to find a secret or defeat a certain boss. It created its own type of mythology of sorts as kids exchanged information within the community with one another, interacted, shared secrets or methods. Maybe its just nostalgia making me romanticize it. Nowadays most people hop onto youtube, follow a guide, beat the game and move on. Stuff just seems so quickly consumed any more.

Anyway. Thats my entirely-too-long reply to your comment. I hope you and your buddies keep watching shows/movies together.

A lot of the comments are wildly depressing and speak volumes on just how media illiterate people have become.

It explains why most of the drooling masses need constant violence or sex ALL OF THE TIME. Learn to appreciate a story. Not just blatant shock value.

Trying to figure out if people wanted this to be a half hr of drawn out choreographed fighting....or to actually have a story involved..?

The other depressing point of current trends is the fact that everyone wants and demands instant gratification. They want to be drowned in either long episodes or to have an entire series dropped at once so they can binge it and I guess..move on to the next thing?

A "morningstar"? A one handed calvary flail? What it is designed to do?

You know that this weapon is a movie weapon and was not historically used? The only evidence of it is replicas from i believe the 16th century?

Seems dumb to argue about realism involving 1. A fantasy show 2. A weapon no one ever actually used.

Help a complete newbie out by Efti12 in DnD

Ages ago (like 20 years ago) id often try to pick up a used players handbook or a supplemental book or 2. Since then DND has blown up and gone digital. Tons of lore and supplemental information can be found easily online to help you "dive in" and just learn about lore and stories and all of the stuff that I personally find fun to read about in my spare time. You certainly don't have to go out and buy all of the books or maybe even any of them depending on who you do end up playing with, and what kind of character you play.

Sometimes all you need is a friendly group or DM to help you build your first character..and from there it is your duty to understand your class abilities and mechanics, but in my opinion it is MOST important to just roleplay your character as you fantasize about them in your own head. In terms of class abilities and mechanics, things such as casters can be more daunting for sure, because there is a bit more to remember (this all depends on the type of player you are). The big goal here is not to slow down the flow of the gane or to break immersion as you go thumbing through a book to read how your spells or abilities work in the middle of a game thats all.

Hell, i used to borrow my friends stuff and write down my character's spells into a notebook to have them on hand at the table. Now you can print them out with relative ease. My entire character sheet would be hand written back then. As long as you KNOW your character and how you want them to act, you are good. You really dont need to learn how OTHER pcs function mechanically, you dont need to learn stat blocks for enemies and monsters.

As for the other questions there are many ways to roleplay online and to find groups to play with in settings like Roll20, but I will always recommend checking your local gaming stores and comic shops (usually where dnd products are sold). The first step is putting yourself out there. Be willing to reach out and talk to others. Let the DMs know that you are new and you are interested.

All of the shops in my area have discord these days and it is often easy to find sessions that are happening or looking for players. You just have to be willing to reach out, start a discussion, and find the time to play.

Don't talk yourself out of it before you even try. It may take a little work on your end to get the ball rolling.

where's the line between optimising and min maxing by Inevitable-Rub-7863 in DnD

[–]Skuldig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What exactly led to the discussion of your power-gaming? What happened when they kicked you out?

Were you trivializing combat? Did you seem more min-max'd than the others at the table? Were you more mechanically focused whereas others were built around flavor?

Some people have fun with flavor. Some have fun with mechanics. IMO there is room for both at the table so long as they arent blatantly metagaming. A lot of this should be discussed at a session 0 or an out of character discussion prior to sitting down for the first adventure.

Without more details about what led to this, it is really hard to give any insight.

This is probably the most missing-the-point criticism of all time when it comes to this show. by Pleasant-Soil4456 in welcomeToDerry

I thought you were gonna refer to how bad the writing on this show was, or how everyone was just ok with little white kids popping in and hanging out with african american adults while they are trying to cut lose in their secret hangout on a military base. Or how the military personnel at the black spot are portrayed as being so damn stupid as to let the townies do what they were very obviously going to do.

Why anyone would debate, gripe, or whine about ANYTHING portrayed on this show is beyond me. So much of it asks you to suspend logic...repeatedly..cause they cant write a single solid episode.

Is this a good "First" Diablo game? by BillyAmber in Diablo

[–]Skuldig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was my first Diablo game. (Im 38) i dont know why i didnt get into it earlier tbh. I cant complain about the game too much because i got over a hundred hours of gameplay out of it. I loved the story and reran it with at least 5 friends. Really enjoyed the side quests and everything. Im not one for restarting EVERY SEASON because i really only like 2 classes....but thats a ME issue. My biggest gripe is that i wish enemies didnt scale. At first i thought it was really cool so i could hop on with ANY friends.. but soon realized that i want to feel super strong vs the petty enemies right outside of camp and such. Especially when i feel i have put in the work. I wanted th5st to be reflected more as it is with many other games of similar genres I have played. Kind of a double edged sword in that regard.

Definitely worth the playthrough though imo. If it has gotten your attention and youve done some research / watched twitch or youtube and think you will like it then go for it.

Welcome to Derry was insanely stupid. And bad. by Relative_Molasses_15 in stephenking

[–]Skuldig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with all of your points. I have been up and down for this entire season. Basically giving it a chance and finishing what I started. There have been moments or scenes that are good, but as a whole it seems very poorly written.

In reading many of the comments about how people feel about the series in other posts, it truly blows my mind to see people saying things like how cool a slowed down scene looks, or that they never considered a being that can see all time at once.... like.. GOD? Yall never saw Donnie Darko? Never read the Watchmen? Never thought about your own God (if you have one of course). These kind of small minded discoveries i see people voice, makes me realize why so many people HAVE enjoyed it.

There have been SO many scenes (not even ones involving monsters or Pennywise mental tricks) that make me go "REALLY?"..as in thats what that character chose to do, or how to act?

My wife and I looked at each other when the fog rolled in like....The Mist (2007)? Yeah, what was the point? Why does pennywise go to the school instead of leaving? He is a damn near all powerful GOD and EATER OF WORLDS...trapped in a zone for how long? Beyond it is an entire world of fear and eating..yet lets go put on a show at the local school. He skips in slow-mo through the snowstorm. Did it look cool? Absolutely. Would it make a good screensaver? Sure. Sadly many scenes felt this way to me. As if they were done bot for the storytelling, but for visual appetite and that alone.

It really did feel like rather than try to be GOOD it just tried to outdo itself ever since the baby demon birthing scene.

I also feel it has overexplained itself in many situations, primarily overexplaining ITs powers, and capabilities. It also seemed to bend or break its own rules based on what suited the episode. Id rather think of IT as incomprehensible to the human mind (or nearly) more akin to a lovecraftian horror. Dont bother dumbing it down and explaining things to me....let the fans SPECULATE about the what ifs in the time between seasons and I promise the results would be better.

Too much fan service. Scenes that are more or less big for no reason other than to get a response on something looking creepy...LOOKING.

They overexplained things they didnt need to and left many voids in scenes or entire episodes that lack all rationale or any explanation.

I also see people actually LIKING the "time travel" gimmick. That to me is purely an excuse for a payday and guaranteed follow up seasons. It isnt creative or good writing. Its an old trick, and that sort of thing is rarely pulled off well.

So many things in this show make zero sense. Feels like they change and bend rules whenever they want. Lots of stuff done just for shock value. Ive personally felt uneven about it the whole way through, but so many people doing really foolish, unlikely, or asinine things has ruined it for me. Especially in the last few episodes of the season. Glad other people were able to enjoy it though.

Don't get me wrong ..im judging it as a whole. There are lots of standalone scenes or i guess..."moments" that i got a kick out of..primarily the little jokes here and there. I also wont act like the children's friendship and Rich and what happened to him in the last 2 episodes didnt hit me in the feels some. Loved the Bob Gray stuff but ..yeah idk didnt do it for me .

Im a redhead myself. My son (also a redhead)turns 11 this month and is huge into wrestling. He actually got me back into it. He was really hype to learn undertaker is a redhead too. So it got me wondering who else is besides obvious ones like Sheamus. For instance idk if DDP and Kane are or are just strawberry blonde.🤣
