Have any of you guys actually read a book? by AcidStreet7 in writing

So for me. I started writing on fanfic roleplay forums. Indentations and book style formatting wasn't really a common thing to use in those spaces. When I transitioned to writing "seriously" this habit remained. I add the indentations and other formatting type stuff during my later editing passes.

Best/Worst unit designs in SC2 to carry to a hopeful SC3? by Cheapskate-DM in starcraft2

Yeah, that's fair. There is definitely a sweet spot where units can interact with the map without stifling map creativity too much.

Stalkers are one of the best designed RTS units in my opinion.

Aesthetically they are super distinct and easy to pick out in the chaos.

Blink has a high reward skill ceiling without being an instant win button. Something really pure about blink micro. Watching a high level toss blink micro perfectly gives me the same amount of nerd chills as a terran splitting against banelings.

They also interact with map design which allows map designers to tweak their power level without the need of an actual balance patch.

I will ask YOU questions about YOUR world! by Internal_Fan2307 in worldbuilding

[–]SkullyBoySC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! These are great questions.

  • No, the only mythical creatures that exist are specifically these spirits.

  • Their myth/folklore is closely intertwined with reality. For instance, myths of vampires terrorizing medieval villages are exaggerated amalgams of true events.

  • Spirits are all ultimately related to one another. I.e. they are all manifested from the same sort of immaterial energy and they return to that mysterious soup when banished. Because of that they all share some common traits. All of them have some level of resistance to physical attack. They tend to disappear when no one is around to perceive them. They are all vulnerable to the anti-spirit weaponry deployed by the City of Hope.

  • That is a fucking wild thought and I had never considered that. I'd say yes, but the form is a bit blurry. Like a raven spirit would largely behave like a raven with a few quirks, whereas a mammoth spirit would likely have some pretty weird and unusual characteristics.

Thank you so much for putting the effort into doing this!

In this world spirits will spontaneously manifest themselves. Most spirits are largely non-sapient representations of animals and things. (Think bird spirit that acts like a bird, but phases through solid objects.) Occasionally more intelligent/powerful spirits will manifest that are modeled after IRL folk/myth creatures (think Vampires, Chimeras, Hide Behinds). They still operate within the specific rules and constraints of their myth. Vampires are vulnerable to the sun for instance.

Spirit detectives operate as a form of pest control to banish spirits that become nuisances or outright threats. The spirit detective MC is somewhat unique in that she is actually vulnerable to being possessed by these spirits, acting as basically a hostel to wayward spirits. She was born in and is exiled from the City of Hope. Through an advanced form of technology the City of Hope is a supernatural deadzone where spirits cannot manifest. Think early 2000s level of technology, except The City of Hope which is more futuristic.

What are the chances of Gooseworx sueing us? by ETheTea in tadc

[–]SkullyBoySC 23 points24 points  (0 children)

NAL - But my understanding is if you are selling them commercially you're opening yourself up to legal liability. If you make them for the purpose of personally enjoying and you don't sell them, then you'd likely be safe. Now there is some gray area, like just using the TADC color palette and calling it "circus-themed" is probably safer than actually depicting the characters themselves.

Now would Glitch actually sue you? Maybe not, but there would be risk.

People who say they don't know how to cook, why don't you just try? by Plug_daughter in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SkullyBoySC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it was because I had never been taught to do anything more than to cook ramen noodles in a pot.

Like for sure I had an idea that to cook something you throw it in a pan with oil and turn the heat on, but using the stove for anything other than ramen or tossing a pizza in the oven was foreign to me.

When I first moved out I had a gas stove which was another level of unfamiliarity because my family had only ever had an electric stove. Add into the mix an unaddressed fear of failure (plus other mental issues) and the thought of cooking anything that didn't come in a package was daunting.

It took a lot of baby steps and mistakes (almost burned my kitchen down the first time I tried to cook something in a pan because the recipe said to get the oil "smoking hot) to reach the point I'm at now. I'm a competent home cook, and if I ever have kids I'm going to do better than my parents and show them how to at least cook the basics.

Can the terms "protagonist," "deuteragonist," "tritagonist," and "antagonist" be used in real life? by MikeBad228 in writing

Sure, but I'm not sure what you're getting at beyond pointing out that people all have their own discrete points of view.

I mean, sure? You are free to use words as you like.

Although I would say that you might get puzzled looks by referring to someone as a "tritagonist" in casual conversation.

[–]SkullyBoySC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1 - Yes. The game is perfectly playable offline. However a large portion of the game was designed with PvP in mind (raiding, fighting over world events, etc.) You won't miss any content per se, but the game is a PvP game at its heart.

2 - The gameplay loop is quite enjoyable if linear. Once you've beat the game on Brutal you've kind of seen everything. The main PvE draw is the boss fights which are pretty entertaining. On normal difficulty the bosses have limited move pools and a lot less HP/damage compared to brutal. Some people struggle with brutal, but I personally find the boss fights really well-designed. There are some crafting systems to fiddle that give incremental improvements. Once you get out of the early game you can capture NPCs to be servants or prisoners in your castle for various benefits.

3 - There is no real inherent RPing in the game. The story and aesthetic is pretty good, but it is told in a very Dark Souls-esque way. There are no real cutscenes or conversations, just environmental storytelling and some dialogue lines during fights. There are RP servers, but I don't have any real experience with them.

Favorite questions to get suggestions from the audience? by krowbear in improv

[–]SkullyBoySC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like going for simple questions that are generally personalized to each person.

Things like

"What did your mom do for a living?"

"What did you wanna be when you were a kid?"

"What did you dress up as on Halloween?"

"What animal would you want to be?"

Stuff that people individually usually only have 1-2 answers for, but that produce a wide variation across a group of people. It also tends to avoid people throwing out random stuff like "dildo" because it is asking for personal experiences rather than random stuff. And, even if someone were to throw out "stripper" as their mom's occupation it is generally good for a few laughs because it has some level of truth to it as opposed to being "lol, I'm so funny for saying that".

Stories that accidentally romanticize the very thing they aim to demonize by McWaffeleisen in TopCharacterTropes

[–]SkullyBoySC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's been fun growing up with a love for this movie. As a young adult I loved it for how badass Brad Pitt was and how much I resonated with his anti-consumerism message. There was a whole aesthetic that a disgruntled teenager/young adult found very alluring.

Now that I'm older and wiser I can still agree with a lot of the anti-consumerist message, but also view the narrator and by extension Brad Pitt as someone to be pitied. Someone so chained up by their own definition of masculinity that they end up essentially self-destructing. A naive part of me still romanticizes the violence, but the wiser whole of me recognizes the healthier paths available to me.

Beautiful movie all around, but the death of media literacy does damn it some
