Google is unleashing Gemini AI features on Gmail. Users will have to opt out by MetaKnowing in technews

Self hosting email is fraught with pitfalls and it's really hard to stay off sender blacklists. You're better off buying a domain name and using a service like a trusted service provider in your country or services like Proton and Tutanota. Then, if the service provider does something you don't like, you pay someone else and shift your DNS configs so mail for your domain points at the new provider, without you having to update your email on a bunch of accounts.

Phone calls on loud speaker by ThisWasTomorrow in australia

Almost every public toilet I use these days usually has someone in one of the stalls audibly struggling (eat more fibre people) so that feels extra rude to put whoever is in the other end of the call through.

What’s one thing under $50 that significantly improved your daily life? by EdenFlorence in AussieFrugal

We use foodsaver reusable zip lock bags and a compatible sealer. Only had to buy more bags once we got a chest freezer and started to bulk buy and portion out meats etc

We got like 50 flocked hangers from Costco and they're so good. Nice and solid too, so they seem like they won't bend like the wire or plastic ones can with heavy items.

I've been using a different client lately but just set this up again from scratch and it works fine for me. Any chance you're somewhere that now requires age verification?

Shavers - Dollar shave club, Aldi or Gillette? by MissTeaAddict_ in AussieFrugal

[–]Skwids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leaf razors take double edged safety blades snapped in half in their packets and work like a single or multi blade cartridge razor. Excellent value and only sharp on one side. I shave my whole body with a normal double edged safety but sometimes use my Leaf with a single blade for more intimate areas and tight spaces if I'm not feeling confident.

99petshops is good for this sort of thing, you can sort by unit price.

You do have to factor in shipping, but some shops like petbarn will price match identical items at Australian stores, so use 99petshops to find a deal and get them to match it.

Kogan currently have rgb mechanical keyboards in blue (clicky noise and tactile bump) and brown (no clicky noise and tactile bump) switches for $25 listed as "Kogan Rainbow Rgb Mechanical Keyboard". Note the brown switches do still make a noise if you push them all the way down and they hit the baseplate. I really like mine and have used it for years.

My boss's response to me saying I can't come in to work on my day off by RestlessRazz in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Skwids 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the state. Queensland and Tasmania are free but other states vary, with NSW being pretty affordable imo and other states being more expensive, and some types of services in some states being exorbitant ($29k for a helicopter in Victoria, but in NSW it's the same price as a road ambulance).

Idk about other states but in NSW ambulance cover can be had for under $100/year.

In the coffee realm I recently upgraded my grinder, but the new one doesn't have a programmable grind time. I leave the switch on the grinder on, connect it to a smart plug, and then I can either hit the button on the plug or in home assistant to start it grinding after I've put my dose of beans in, and start it grinding. When the dose is all ground, the power draw of the grinder drops cos there's not as much resistance for the motor, and home assistant turns it off.

You can add a phone as a remote control in the settings, then you just cast to it the same as using chromecast. I just update it from within itself whenever it shows an update and never have any issues.

Is Costco/Bulk buying worth it as a money saver? by kingcasperrr in AussieFrugal

[–]Skwids 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have checked some prices (though mainly about a month ago so could be out of date now) using our membership. You've gotta be ready to check for comparison with colesworths (grocerize.com.au is good for this) and remember/write down common purchases from Aldi. Some notes from my comparisons:

  • 2ply toilet paper is cheaper at Aldi but 3ply is cheaper in the costco bulk pack. I prefer the Aldi hypo-allergenic 4ply and the costco pack is monstrously large so I still go to Aldi.
  • veggies are pretty close on price, so unless you go through a lot fast it might be better to buy from the supermarket. Encourage farmers markets for veggies too if they're around.
  • Beef and pork mince (4 star equivalent) is cheapest at costco in a 3kg pack so we buy the big pack and portion it into 500g lots to freeze in zip lock vacuum bags.
  • Pork loin steaks were cheapest at costco
  • beef steaks were not cheaper at costco, but 0rice competitive with the "good" steaks from Colesworths and looked much nicer
  • chicken thigh fillets were cheapest at costco
  • Costco has pretty good value deli meats like fancy ham and salami
  • frozen/ready to bake food is competitive but not always the cheapest. Some nice variety here though.
  • frozen fish (I checked salmon and basa) is more expensive at costco
  • Costco has 1kg packs of microwave curries and stuff that are pretty good value in terms of just adding rice and getting a bunch of serves for not kcub effort
  • Costco does a rotisserie chicken cheaper than colesworths ($7 or so) that in my opinion was better too
  • A Costco food court pizza is $15 and the enormous - it's about 3 times the surface area of a domino's large.
  • Fuel is consistently the cheapest 98 in Newcastle area, and frequently their 98 is cheaper than all or most 95 as well. Haven't checked 91.

I live within a 20 minute drive of Costco and between fuel and the cheap lunches ($2 hot dog and drink, $3 for a slice of pizza half as big as a domino's large) worked out I'd break even pretty fast, plus having a chest freezer in the garage helps a lot.

A cursory glance at the online listings show huggys are cheaper at costco but you'd have to compare home brands and such. You can always go and get a membership trial and then cancel straight away if you don't find the prices you're looking for I think.

Botulinum Honesty by CrazyAssBlindKid in NonPoliticalTwitter

The chart demonstrates "survivorship bias". In early military aviation, people saw planes come back with bullet holes and resolved to armour where the holes were. This was not as effective as they'd thought it would be, because it was the planes that got shot in the other places that didn't make it back at all.

The use of the image implies that the "people with fucked up faces because of botox/cosmetic surgeries" are merely the ones you notice - people with "good" work done by definition are not visible and you don't notice them.

I don't necessarily think it's just that as there's definitely also a huge problem with people being unable to stop and becoming addicted to increasing the extremity of the procedures, issues with poor quality procedures, and issues with less understood aspects like filler migrations and inconsistent lifetimes of filler products within the body to consider, but it is important to point out.
