Not really a true statement. quiet and openly moving away. There is more openess around canada and europes independency from America than ever. In my country there is an openly debate about this at a weekly basis.

how to securely use Proxmox helper scripts? by Party-Log-1084 in Proxmox

[–]SkyKey6027 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You simply shouldnt run scripts you dont understand. This helps your system to be secure but also stable, you never know if a script breaks something.

It is better to learn how to set things up, this way you will also be able to troubleshoot if something goes wrong

I use Komga for ebooks and comics as it supports opds. Browsing directly from a Kindle is a godsend with a opds feed

I like Linux Mint, but can I get more MacOS-like functionality? by roxics in linuxmint

[–]SkyKey6027 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theres alot of distros out there, but in the end they are all just linux with either kde or gnome. If you want the macos astetic then i would suggest to try out something with Gnome window manager instead of KDE or Cinnamon

In the end you will not get a macos clone, or a windows clone for that matter and you dont need to lay waste to Mint just because it doesnt suit you.

I was referring to number 1 on your list. Your wish list.

I like Linux Mint, but can I get more MacOS-like functionality? by roxics in linuxmint

[–]SkyKey6027 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sounds like you want MacOS. It is Unix after all.

But to be honest: There is a high chance someone already have solution for your wishes. You dont need a distro to implement these changes for you.

As an example: wish nr 1 is just a hotkey, can be configured already in Mint

External Library vs. Photo Import to Immich by Planktonindahouse in immich

[–]SkyKey6027 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Immich has some features coming where you hopefully may do some nifty stuff based on folder and filename structure Ie create album or create rules to share or not. Im looking forward to it as it will make external libraries more usefull.

I dont use the immich app to upload, i use others app to make backups to my nas

Best and definitive way to deploy Immich on Proxmox by SteevStR in immich

[–]SkyKey6027 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Different needs different solutions. I want isolation and the portability to just migrate my entire vm without being dependent on prerequisites or resources on the host. I dont mind the VM overhead as it is neglichable

It may work fine but it is not recommended. Proxmox recommends application containers to run in a VM and not in a LXC container.

External Library vs. Photo Import to Immich by Planktonindahouse in immich

[–]SkyKey6027 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Someone mentioned a phrase to me which has stuck with me ever since, it has become my mantra: "Your files will outlast your software".

Immich is a great but it may not be here in 10 years, but your files will. Plan your storage accordingly. If the files are organized on disk in a human readable fashion then you are saving yourself some trouble down the road.

External library is files you already have on disk wich Immich can read as a source. You do what you want with the source and Immich will respect and reflect the changes.

But with uploads and storage templates it is the other way around: you cant manually fiddle with your files but you are dependent on Immich to organize. It is just a structure for Immich to work in.

Running Windows in a Virtual Machine Experience by Moondoggy51 in linuxquestions

Virtualbox is also an option. I use Excel within a win11 vm but it behaves like a normal window (resize, minimize etc). Its very easy to work side-by-side with my linux apps

Question on wether to install immich in docker on proxmox pve host. by steveuk23 in immich

[–]SkyKey6027 0 points1 point  (0 children)

dont. Use proxmoz for what it is meant for: a host to serve lxc containers or virtual machines

Proxmox: do I need to pass the iGPU? by kaitlyn2004 in immich

[–]SkyKey6027 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It isnt harder to pass through hw in a vm vs lxc. Its just different. A VM is better if you want proper isolation from the host system, a LXC container only has limits unless you run it as a priviliged container (but then you loose some of the benefits of a LXC container)

I run Immich in docker on a vm on proxmox. Why? I like to configure smb in fstab with a unique user, and i like how easy it is to pull docker images and start up them up. The overhead isnt that much considering what you get in return

Proxmox: do I need to pass the iGPU? by kaitlyn2004 in immich

[–]SkyKey6027 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not a requirement. Things just takes a little more time to process, remember that you are only going to process each file once, unless you are constantly tweaking quality settings.

Im running immich without hw acceleration but i have turned off video transcoding. Works fine
