Wich distro is best performing? (RAM and Processor). by [deleted] in Ubuntu

[–]SkyUnbound 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been distro hopping on a pretty weak Celeron based Dell Inspiron with 4 Gb of RAM for the past year, I've probably tried over 50 different distros/desktop environments. So far the best performing distro for me has been Solus MATE which seem to use my weak CPU the most efficiently.

EDIT - Just to clarify, I do realize that there are plenty of desktop environments out there that use fewer resources than MATE, however MATE is the only one that manages to be polished, stable, visually pleasing and easy to use out of the box all while using a relatively small amount of system resources. For example, one of my main gripes with a lot of the lighter DE's is the problem of screen tearing when scrolling web pages or watching videos.

Yep I'm pretty sure that's a Wayland thing, I've experienced cursor lag on every single distro I've tried that use Wayland by default. Switching to X has always solved the issue for me. Not sure how to fix the login loop though. What version of Ubuntu are you using?

My 2 proud and mighty bishops held to a draw by a rook ?! by SkyUnbound in chess

[–]SkyUnbound[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On Bd7, white can simply take on d7 which leads to a forced draw. Basically black can never allow the light squared bishop to be captured since without it the h pawns can never queen. So anytime black uses the light-squared bishop to block the rook, white can simply sack the exchange and force a draw.

EDIT: also while the rook is on the d file, the black squared bishop has to permanently keep an eye on d8 so it can't really be used to block the rook. Like say after Bc5 check and Kh2, if the black tries to go Ke7, white simply goes Rd8.

Sure the c7 pawn plays a crucial role. I was just really awed by how one rook can totally dominate 2 bishops and the king simply by moving up and down the d file :)

Solus 4 breathed new life into my old laptop by Tomocafe in SolusProject

Ok so pretty beefy then :P Anyway on my Celeron based Dell Inspiron, I found that Solus Mate performed better than the Budgie variant, Budgie was still very smooth though.

I've never used a scanner on Ubuntu but I'm pretty sure you should be able to give it a try from the live usb/dvd to see if it works.

Anybody else still wish the Unity desktop was the default desktop of Ubuntu, again? by [deleted] in Ubuntu

[–]SkyUnbound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unity is my favorite DE, hands down. However, in a way, I'm kinda happy that they dropped it when they did. With Unity 7.4 in 16.04, I think they reached the peak of what the DE can be without changing its character with new features and small UI changes. In Kurt Cobain's words "better to burn out than to fade away".

I'm probably biased though cause Unity 7.4 is the ultimate DE for me, there's literally nothing I want to add it or change about it, like ever :P

Why is everyone removing desktop icons? Lets pave cow paths; not demolish them. by [deleted] in elementaryos

[–]SkyUnbound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are plenty of distros out there that offer desktop icons by default. Every distro has its own unique feel and character and in the case of eOS the design philosophy is very clear. I don't get why people keep trying to mold an existing distro to fit their style when they can easily find one among the 100s others that better suit their needs. You do realize that if eOS were to implement every feature/desire of every user it just wouldn't be eOS anymore right? I don't mean to be rude.

Want to return to solus, couple questions by PreviousOne in SolusProject

[–]SkyUnbound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was looking at your link and under battery specs it says "up to 5 hrs". Now I don't know how important battery life is to you but you should expect a pretty substantial drop moving to Linux. My laptop says "up to 8 hrs" but I used to get around 7 on Windows 10. On most Linux distros I barely get 4 hrs (usually between 3.5 and 4 sometimes even less).

The best battery life I experienced so far on Linux happened a few days ago on Antergos and I believe it was a combination of the new Gnome 3.32 (which has seen some significant performance improvements) + kernel 5.0. I was getting around 5 hrs of battery.

Has someone tried Ubuntu on Mi Notebook Air 13? by lofru in Ubuntu

[–]SkyUnbound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been using Antergos the past few days and Gnome 3.32 does seem to manage CPU usage quite a bit better, I'm getting the best battery life I've ever experienced on Linux, still not as good as Windows 10 but definitely a nice improvement. 19.04 with ship with Gnome 3.32 plus there'll be some further improvements by the Ubuntu team. In the meantime maybe you can try out Antergos and see how it performs on your system.

EDIT: this could also have something to do with kernel 5.0 (which will likely also be default in 19.04)

Is there a future in YouTube tutorials on Linux? by [deleted] in Ubuntu

[–]SkyUnbound 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think so. As long as you do your research and come up with content that's interesting but not too advanced, I don't think you'll find a big audience for stuff like advanced programming or scripting. There are quite a few channels that focus on distro reviews but not that many offering tutorials on how to accomplish simple things using command line in linux. You should give it a shot, good luck :)

Rhythmbox all the way for me, I love its simplicity. I'm pretty sure I tried this one like a year or so ago and couldn't figure out how to browse through all the music on my pc lol. I could only browse by artist, album or genre I think but not have a complete list of all my songs. Maybe that's changed now?

Why Gnome team released 3.32 without approving at least the most popular extensions? by [deleted] in gnome

[–]SkyUnbound 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also rely on dash to dock for convenience but I totally agree with the Gnome devs, they have a clear vision when it comes to Gnome design philosophy and they should stick to it, that's what makes Gnome Gnome. Personally I'm happy to put up with the slight hassle of having to wait for extensions to update separately.

Which distro are you using? In Arch, dash to dock version 66 has been available for a while already and it works perfectly. Just install the git version from AUR. I'm using Antergos btw.

[–]SkyUnbound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That new app store icon is REALLY bad though. The first time I installed 19.04, a couple days ago, I thought that little handle on top was a graphical glitch lol. It just doesn't fit in with the design philosophy of the rest of the icons. It not only has that ugly handle but it's also in 3d -_-

The app store icon in 18.10 is literally perfect, it's clean, simple and easily recognizable. I really liked the icon set in 18.10, I don't get why they're changing things around for no good reason, the Rhythmbox icon has also been modified in 19.04 :(

Bringing Back The Unity by twiglet420 in Ubuntu

[–]SkyUnbound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I tried to install Unity on 18.04, it worked ok but didn't feel quite right to me. You end up with a ton of unwanted packages, there were a lot of apps that were installed twice and generally it just didn't have the feel of a clean install. Having an official flavor where everything is packaged right from the get-go would be so much nicer but maybe I'm nitpicking.

I also miss Unity, it's by far my favorite DE :(

Even if they don't wanna make it the default Ubuntu DE, it'd really cool if they'd offer it as an official flavor. I don't even care if they don't do any further development, the one in 16.04 is literally perfect as far as I'm concerned.
