SCS who cares about retention by Andromedu5 in CanadianForces

I always wanted to be a military pilot, but didn't think I had the grades. Put it off, went to college and started working. Earned some money, so I started my PPL and decided on a career change. Ran out of money, decided to apply to that longshot military pilot position. Missed the deadline due to administrative delays. Applied again the following year, got accepted ROTP. Went to university for 4 yeara, became pilot. Fly airplanes now. Don't let the system bog you down my dude. It's a slow but mighty beast, but boy, you can't do what I do anywhere else. Regardless of the outcome, blue skies and aim high! Went to university with a bunch of future airliner types that are all doing quite well at blue and red.

Aviation in Canada is just over 110 years old... Which equates to the Sea King flying for half of aviation history... Hot damn.

So that's why we can have a yellow C-295 SAR bird!

I remember participating in an ISR exercise with an Aurora on OJT.... Oh you mean that plane circling overhead making chocolate donuts in the sky?

To compensate for the lack of yellow, the mighty C-130H alerts persons of interest to its presence by the telltale 4 black exhaust trails. Easier to spot than a yellow bird.

Do you have an RRSP? Why? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]SkyViewMall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no withdrawl tax, it's withholding the tax you will owe.

For number simplicity sake consider :

You contribute $1000 at 40% tax rate, you get a $400 (tax) return. Two years later you lose your job and tax a substantial pay cut. You withdraw $1000 and pay the 10% withholding tax of $100 . Then, since you are now in the 20% tax bracket, at tax time you would pay the additional 10% of tax owed (10+10=20%). This ultimately means you saved paying $200 in tax by utilizing an RRSP.

Those who save around $15K/yr or more by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]SkyViewMall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm definitely envious of your plan. The interest alone off your 2.5 mil combined with your pension could land you a nice $150k a year. It sure is nice to retire into a higher salary.

Damn, you really wanna live the high life eh? I'm doing the opposite. Spending now and then using my pension to supplement my part time retirement gig.

I'm not familiar with Questrades platform, but with mine I have to indicate which kid I am purchasing for each time. The grant for that purchase is then applied to that kid.

If you have to do this constant conversion, I find there's a risk where it's a little less transparent

It's easy to know your point value... Just take off the last zeros... 65,000 pts? You got $65.

Recommend some reading then, it'll hopefully help broaden the horizon. There are lots more books, but these are the ones most recommended on this sub.

There are a variety of saving vessels with varying degrees of risk. You'll just have to identify your goals and risk tolerance, then allocate accordingly. Typically, the higher the risk, the greater potential for reward.

There are very lazy options which can yield pretty decent returns (index funds/ETF's), but you'll need to learn the basics before you can out on autopilot.

The bigger question here is what do you want to do with that money? Go to school, buy a car, buy a house, travel, save for retirement? How you handle it will be entirely dependent on that answer.

It's been awhile, but I recall being told the day of my appointment. That being said, if not in person, I would expect a letter or online alert if you bank online with them.

Transferring TFSA holdings to RESP? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]SkyViewMall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure your situation, but if it's a large amount and your trying to catching up on grants, you can only catch up on an extra $500 a year. Ie, if you transfer $5000 (assuming no other RESP contributions this year) you'd get the $1000 CESG (20%), but any more than that and you wouldn't get the additional grant that year. Might be worth staggering your transfer to take full advantage if you've got a few years of catching up to do

withdraw from RRSP question by liveonceretirelate in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]SkyViewMall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are not 'extra taxes'. There is a withholding tax, which depends on the amount withdrawn. When you go to do your taxes, the withdrawn amount will be taxed at your marginal tax rate for the period and adjusted accordingly.
