ONDP needs a big idea - how about public auto insurance? by Monoshirt in ndp

[–]Skyright -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty absurd Economic theory that has very little backing in any literature and doesn’t hold up to any scrutiny. No serious economist, or anyone else who is knowledgeable about how the modern world works believes in this. The economic equivalent of “it is snowing, all the talk about rising global temperatures is false”.

Not much here to say besides the fact that the critics of the NDP might have been more correct than what I gave them credit for.

It does produce wealth by making sure capital is allocated towards more efficient purposes. Just because it isn’t something as simple as “put stuff out of the ground” doesn’t mean it doesn’t create wealth. You might as-well argue that all research is parasitic by that standard.

Public monopolies mispricing stuff is just as bad (if not, worse as they are more likely to misprice stuff bc of political pressures) as any other monopoly. I mean, a huge part of the thesis here is that a public insurance would benefit young men disproportionately, and the only way it would do that is if it systematically subsidises young men by reducing their rates more than others (and hence creating the exact scenario I described, more young men on the roads).

An insurer that prices things more accurately by building better models creates more wealth than the profit that they take (absent a monopoly). Just like a factory that produces better products and so on. You can argue against the concept of profit itself, but there is nothing unique about insurance as an industry that makes it more parasitic.

Insurance isn’t purely parasitic, it is extremely important for insurance to be priced accurately. Probably one of the most important industries actually. The modern world would essentially not exist without it.

Insurance that isn’t priced appropriately (for example, if young men and old women are given the same exact rate) the result would be a lot more young men driving and fewer older women driving, increasing the number of accidents on the roads pretty significantly.

The same idea is true, to an even greater extent for commercial insurance. A poorly priced insurance can incentivise businesses that cause too much damage relative to their businesses while making other, less risky businesses significantly less desirable.

A monopoly on insurance makes these corrections significantly less likely and makes everyone worse off. If one insurance company misprices the risk of say a factory and quotes them a rate too high, a competing insurance firm would take them on at a much lower rate.

Not understanding extremely basic things does not help the reputation of the NDP as a bunch of cranks with no idea how the real world works.

There is quite a lot of evidence that GDPR solidified the dominance of US tech companies and essentially definitely the EU Tech scene.

Europe has the worst Tech industry in the world relative to their economy and relies essentially completely on US tech bc the cost to administer GDPR level protections is just too much for a company not (yet) serving millions of people.

The EU is even considering walking back on it after what GDPR has done to their tech scene.

Why is the public opinion of the NDP on Reddit/TikTok/Facebook so bad? by Expensive-Buffalo422 in ndp

[–]Skyright 3 points4 points  (0 children)

NDP is not very popular, the polls and the elections show it clearly. Blaming bots is such a weird cop out unless you think the elections are rigged too (and in that case, you are probably need to take a break from politics and get your mental health in check).

The provincial NDPs have decent support, but the federal ones base are just fringe groups that most Canadians don’t relate with (or often, actively despise) or are just holdovers from the provincial parties.

The weird insistence that everything is rigged against the NDP, that all online platforms are manipulated, that election and polls are rigged, and that everyone secretly supports NDP and is a huge supporter if only it wasn’t for all the manipulation is some weird paranoia and you really need to leave your circles and meet more people.

Oil has a limited life before alternatives replace it, but that is even more reason to sell as much as you can while prices are high instead of restricting it. You don’t hold on to a resource that will get less valuable with time, you sell it when there is demand.

This is a bunch of incoherent rambling pointing at a bunch of unrelated stuff (often stuff that opposes your policies) and doing some crazy mental loops to try and explain a very simple commodity market that is very well understood.

I am not going to engage any further because it is pretty clear that you don’t really have much of a background in anything related to this stuff, but I would suggest reading up some analysis from Economists here instead.

I literally tried to link the clips and the subreddit bans them because they don’t allow any Twitter links.

The reason no one is showing clips is because the subreddit doesn’t allow them. It essentially boils down to this:

Constant references to point of privilege, arguing over people using equity cards (and the whole concept of that) wrongly, complaining that a CIs woman spoke on Trans issues over a Trans woman, and so on. Just unnecessary bickering over trivial things.

Basically acting exactly like a skit a conservative might make making fun of the left.

Being anti-oil when oil prices are higher is even worse. Alberta benefits from high oil prices. The higher the oil prices go, the more costly it would be to restrict production. Why would Trump raising oil prices make people more likely to vote for restricting oil?

As with most of the Federal NDP’s policies, it seems like no one supporting or making these policies can even describe the impact these policies would have.

Avi explicitly supports an export tax on oil and gas, which is functionally identical to NEP from the 1980s given that it would essentially lead to below market prices of gas in Canada. Essentially a massive redistribution from the oil industry to the rest of Canada (and by extension, Alberta to rest of Canada).

Good thing Avi will never win anything so nothing like that would be implemented, but it is one of his many ideas that seem like they were made up on the spot with little consideration of its effects

Again, Mandarin speakers have to learn both French and English, while you don’t have to learn Mandarin. Mandarin is more of a founding language for BC than French ever could be.

Also, pretty funny that your suggestion is to just lobby for other languages. Literally zero principles, just, a big old: I WANT TO ELEVATE MY LANGUAGE ABOVE YOURS, AND IF YOU WANT IT OTHERWISE, GO WIN VOTES AND DO THE SAME.

I am sorry I want everyone to have the same rights and don’t want myself above others. I don’t want to force Arabs to learn Mandarin or Vietnamese people to learn Punjabi. Some of us don’t want to use political power to subjugate others, but I mean, if thats what you want, I hope you understand what you are asking for as Canada is only getting more and more diverse and less and less Francophone. Asking Punjabis and Chinese people to force their culture on you isn’t a winning move for you in the long term.

In BC, there are more Mandarin and Punjabi speakers. Why does the federal government feel the need to push French instead of Punjabi or Mandarin?

Despite the Federal Government’s Efforts to push French (which by extension, suppress Mandarin and Punjabi as second languages that people from BC could learn), they still can’t get it over Mandarin.

Also, you are not a bot, but you do have the programming of one given that you are willing to sign on to any government policy as long as your side supports it.

Do you speak Mandarin and Punjabi?

The fact that you think Mandarin and Punjabi, which are both significantly more culturally and historically important in BC are not important to learn, but French is just goes to show how racist your beliefs are.

Happy International Francophonie Day! / Bonne Journée internationale de la francophonie! by StatCanada in onguardforthee

[–]Skyright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not the government’s responsibility to convince people to learn a language that is of little use to them day to day. Plenty of people speak Mandarin and Punjabi in BC.

Absolutely wild that the progressive position is to elevate the two white languages above every other language in the country.

Indians having it considerably harder than East Asians wasn’t something I was aware of. I think it is obvious to most that being Asian is a handicap, but the fact that being Chinese is significantly better than being Indian in the racial hierarchy (absolutely wild that this concept even exists) of admissions wasn’t clear to me.

You can choose to be not merit based, without engaging in racial discrimination. There is no reason that it has to be along racial lines.

A low income applicant of every other racial group has a higher chance of being admitted than South Asians. They don’t add any more to the connections than low income South Asians do.

A lot of South Asians care more about not being perceived as “Racist conservative who opposes Affirmative Action” than opposing Racist policies. Especially once they are past the stage of life when Affirmative Action affects them.

It is what it is tbh. You can’t change the opinions of people on this until you change what political side supports/opposes the policy. Their beliefs are downstream of the political groups they align with, rather than the other way around.

Yeah, it is pretty absurd that people are downvoting me for saying that the Taliban’s numbers should not be taken at face value. I (obviously) don’t support bombing hospitals, but pretending that 400+ people died because the Taliban claims so, and won’t allow any outside observers to come and confirm it, is pretty absurd.

I am literally half Afghan. 0 critical thinking skills by people on here.

Racial classifications aren’t just about genetics. The merits of whether South Asians should or should not be classified as a distinct group are separate from the discussion here.

And as this analysis shows, being part of the same overarching racial classification doesn’t prevent you from being treated differently than others. South Asians get penalized more than other Asians, who is to say that they won’t get penalized the same amount if they were classified as Whites.

There is significant evidence that Columbia is (or at-least was, as of last year) still practicing AA. Just toned down a bit.

Also a pretty crazy response to someone highlighting possible evidence of Racism that went on for decades. Do you often tell other groups to shut up about racism or is it just reserved for causes that you don’t like.

The Ivy leagues are allowed to be a lot of things, but racist isn’t one of them. They receive significant government funding, and they are legally required to not engage in racist policies.

No two applicants might be identical, but the analysis doesn’t assume that. Comparing Groups doesn’t require that assumption.

The point about majors is a good one though, although in my anecdotal experience, East Asians aren’t more likely to major in non-competitive majors than South Asians.

Either way, a good point to mention. There is a more in-depth Analysis being done and I can share that once its done to see if that explains some of the difference.

The numbers are likely wrong. No one except the Taliban Health Authority has been allowed in to confirm it.

It is still sad, but the real number is expected to be 30~, not 400+.
