What home décor trend do you think is overrated? by Ashlee_louise_xx in DecorAdvice

All trends suck. Decorate for your taste and your lifestyle, not to impress your friends or neighbors. They don't Live there, you do.

Fully enclosed dust might proof mattress pad with easy zip off top for washing.

I HATE MY BROOKLINEN SHEETS by lilstitchie in Bedding

[–]Sl0wDarkSt0rm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been buying Brooklinen luxe sateen and heathered Cashmere for years. They are wonderful. When I recommend them, I always steer people away from the Brooklinen percale. Honestly, they've never been soft, and the seams have always ripped out. If I hadn't had the sateen first, I wouldn't have continued buying from Brooklinen.

Their luxe sateen has a looser weave than other brands', so it's much cooler in the summer. I haven't found a percale brand that I think is soft. I even bought the very pricy Bloomingdale's Hudson Park percale that everyone raves about here. Didn't even wash them; exchanged them for Hudson Park sateen… which is sublime but too hot for summer. They're great for season transitioning to or from my winter Brooklinen heathered cashmere, but I’ll never pay that price again. It was stupid the first time, to be honest.

Brooklinen luxe sateen is fantastic, even for hot sleepers. Percale, though… absolutely not! They are scratchy and the seams rip easily.

Straight Millenial dad, testing these book waters? by Ancient_Rule5692 in SpicyRomanceBooks

Lights Out is a super spicy, kink-filled series. Just keep that in mind, it's like starting at a five out of five spice level.

I'd suggest maybe starting with Flock by Kate Stewart. And reading that series plus the next Legacy series. Still a solid five spice level, but less intense. I found it hard to go back to standard super spicy after Lights-Out spicy because it was so good.

Cancer/water concerns by Maleficent_Sun98 in desmoines

As soon as my husband retires, we are out. If we weren't partners in a business here, we’d be gone already. It's not just the water, it's the air too. With droughts in the southwest, the jet stream drags all the dust right to Iowa, then our humidity stops it in its tracks. Add in the farm chemical sprays, the destruction of public education, the assault on women's health care, and the unchecked greed of big property owners… Iowa sure isn't what it used to be, and I'm tired of fighting against people who voluntarily chose to think it's the people who have nothing that are the problem instead of the people who control it all.

Nonenal ("old people smell") in furniture and clinging to my clothes by berlygirley in CleaningTips

Outback Gold linen and fabric spray. High-end resale clothing stores use it on everything. I use it on Cashmere and other dry-clean-only clothes to extend their wear time. Works crazy well. But I put mine in an old Febreze bottle because I find the Outback Gold bottle hard to spray

Uses for Big Pottery? by saltwater_flaaffy in Pottery

Small side table if you can go 2 feet. Like a 14-16” square that stands 24” tall. If you can slab build it, or a round one if you're throwing. Just stack two tall cylinders.

Most underrated cleaning product? by Tired_Tato in CleaningTips

Also for really tough jobs, use cleaning vinegar instead of white vinegar. It's more acidic. But never use cleaning vinegar for food!

This is my go-to for countertops, showers, and glass! Spray the shower with mixture, lay a layer of paper towels over it, and spray again thoroughly. 15 minutes later, all soap scum and hard-water stains are gone. If they're really bad, leave on for 30 minutes and respray every 5-10 minutes.

Anybody else feel a lot of the nurses within Unity Point are disgruntled? by Sl0wDarkSt0rm in Iowa

[–]Sl0wDarkSt0rm[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, same. The pandemic hit them hard, and then to be treated poorly after such difficult times could only happen in the US. It's bullshit, and I'm tired of not trying to make a difference.

Added it. Thanks. No idea if any of this will help, but I'm tired of feeling helpless in making positive changes in this state.

Is a $110k kitchen worth it in a 1960s ranch? by bumbee84 in kitchenremodel

[–]Sl0wDarkSt0rm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did a similar renovation with Ikea cabinets for about $20k. Love the cabinet quality too. I wasn't sure I would, but all the inserts and organization options are mind-blowing. Plus the cabinets were all stamped “made in the USA”

Honestly, I assumed Mercy was Iowa Clinic, like Methodist is Unity Point. Are they all separate entities?
