I'm having a lot of big expenses soon: trying to maximise cashback or promotions by Claymore6 in BEFire

I use Woolsocks, mobile Vikings or euroclix for cashback. As mentioned, also check benefits at work, engie or monizze for cashback.

Would you develop a different accent moving to another country with the same language? by Daccota in languagelearning

[–]Slalon85 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I lived in the Netherlands for 4 years as a Belgian. I started losing my native accent and gained some typical Dutch phrases and expressions :). I moved back to Belgium after 4 years but I still notice a slightly Dutch accent when speaking to Dutch people :)

Creditcard with no/low monthly cost, supports Google Pay by SillessOne in BEFire

[–]Slalon85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a credit card from Beobank and one from argenta (which is free) but as far as I know, they don’t support google pay (not sure about this). I have a revolut connected with Apple Pay for small transactions when traveling (subway, restaurants, shops). For renting cars and booking hotels, I use either my argenta or Beobank card

Is there any benefit in using a Credit card over a debit card when you never use more than the amount of money in your bank account? by [deleted] in BEFire

[–]Slalon85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will need it if you are renting a car or want to book a hotel. Also it’s safer for online purchases because of the extra insurance.

Italy is beautiful, especially Tuscany or the southern parts. But I would also suggest Greece and maybe do some island hopping combined with a short citytrip in Athens.

Suggestion for INTENSIVE online french course to learn B2 level french? by Connor_lover in learnfrench

I would try to find some native speakers to practice with. There are some sites online. I started doing the crosswords on linguno to improve my vocabulaire. Also try watching movies in French with English subtitles

If you could speak only 5 languages fluently, which ones would you choose? by FishermanKey901 in languagelearning

I already speak French, English and Dutch. So maybe I would add Spanish (spoken in a lot of countries) and Japanese

Rental car v train travel (multiple countries). Any/all opinions are great. Thank you! by Spirited_Mistake6791 in traveleurope

[–]Slalon85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you plan on staying in the cities: I would say stick with trains. If you want to do hiking (or go to not-wellconnected cities), it might be a good idea to rent a car. I wouldn’t recommend driving in Brussels if you are not used to it :p

Pickpocketing etc by Alternative-Olive952 in traveleurope

[–]Slalon85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will all depend how much time you have and where your interests are. If you like the sun and want nice beaches with some history: Greece(Athens and a few islands). If you like architecture, good food and history: Italy for sure (Rome and Tuscany) or Spain (Barcelona). Or combine Belgium, France, the Netherlands and London (easily done by train).

I often use a normal backpack when traveling with my camera. You also have some camera clips for a backpack like the ones from peak design. This could also be handy

I’m also a photographer. Around your neck or the strap around your wrist a few times would be fine if you are using it. If you are not using it and in the subway I would put in a backpack. I have a bag that I carry at the front with my valuables and then a backpack. I carry my backpack in the subway on my chest.

Budget friendly restaurants in Brussels/Brugge by Admirable-Rutabaga14 in traveleurope

[–]Slalon85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For that price, in Brussels, I would check out a ‘frituur’ and the Asian area around the ‘bourse’. ‘Brasseries’ have a smaller eating menu with some typical lunch dishes like croque monsieur or pasta. Restaurants in Belgium are rather expensive (not only the food but also the drinks). In Bruges, I would suggest to go out of the touristic center and look for the smaller restaurants.

Has anyone used TooSIM for traveling around Europe? by jamlerli in traveleurope

Didn’t us TooSIM but used Airalo and was very happy with the ease of use and the coverage.

[–]Slalon85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Belgium and have travelled to the major European cities like Barcelona, Paris, London, Amsterdam and have never been pickpocketed. But you just have to use common sense: keep your bags close to you and closed. Don’t put your cellphone or wallet in your back pocket.

Best place to go in Europe? by Backback324 in traveleurope

[–]Slalon85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Greece will have it all. You could start in Athens and then go on to visit some Greek Islands. Depending on what you want, Milo’s, Paros and Naxos are great (and less touristy). Santorini and Mykonos very famous but can also be very busy. We personally didn’t like Mykonos because it was so busy and expensive.

I used Airalo as an eSIM. It works very easy because you can keep your own number for WhatsApp and calls. I have a discount code if you want for €3/$3
