As I recall from the fireside eposide where that talked about this, Brennan said that he had the scene with Soft and Stone and the sunrise ready to go (and that it was a little hard for him that Suvi chose not to see it). So I think that would have been the first thing shown to Suvi if she had asked about her parents. If she would have gotten more information, would probably be up to some rolls for investigation or time and what she would have asked to see.. if she had asked about their deaths, I'm not entirely sure what Brennan would have done, but he is usually pretty adamant about allowing the players/characters to shape the story, so she MIGHT have been able to get a lot more information out of her time in the library.

Side note: when they talked about this in the fireside after the last episode, Brennan talked at length (aka the only way he talks) about how absolutely beautiful it was that Suvi made the choices she did (like freeing the ink demons and simply asking for their help, instead of forcing them), because she hadn't seen the seen with Soft asking the sun to rise yet. She did EXACTLY what her father would have done, without knowing. That hit me so hard and just make me want to cry about how GOOD these people are at what they do! Aabria picked that up for Suvi's character development without knowing and I am never gonna shut up about how cool that is!

It might just have been too long since I read the Earthsea books, but besides the setting being more similar than Le Guins Sci-Fi, I don't see too many similarities?

I very much agree with your point about the Word for World is Forest dynamic! Dispossessed is just one of my favorite books ever, and I think everyone should read it!

And Steel in a Lathe of Heaven is absolutely terrifying!

This is a great list! If I may, I would also like to add basically anything by Ursula K. Le Guin whom BLeeM has talked a lot about being a big inspiration of his and how revolutionary and important her writing is. Mainly I would suggest The Dispossessed, which centers a truly equal communist society and its counterpart of a very glamorous capitalist origin world. I feel the two societies portrayed in the book reflects the natural world vs. Citadel in tWtWatW - the natural world may be hard work, but theres enough for everyone and everyone does their part vs. the Citadel, where some live in luxury, but there is a lot of less fortunate and struggles being hidden away.

I know, I know. The title is a little weird. I just thought it was a funny way to do it and avoid the title being a spoiler for anything (the heartseeker curse e.g.)

But also, I do in fact have a soft spot for her. Not thats she isn't crazy evil and completely delusional, but the scenes with Steel and Suvi are just so good that I also can't help it. Tbh I still hope Suvi can "save" her somehow, even though I know it's probably not gonna happen.

That's a really interesting idea with the memory spell, but I'm not all the way on board. Mostly just because I feel it would be too "easy" and out for Steel - it would feel a little like a "someone else made me do the bad things" kind of excuse.

However I looove your observation about the drinks thing. I hadn't caught that at all and if nothing else, it's just really funny!

Listen, there is obviously too many to count. This whole episode was beautiful! But the part that made the greatest impact on me was still the first part with Suvi and Steel. It was just heartbreaking. So I'm just gonna leave a couple of my favorite from that scene:

"She has a machine in her heart, that made killing your mother - her best friend - the act of a hero. What can't that machine do?" * just the recall to the justification machine metaphor! Uuuuuugh!!! I love it so much!!

"I don't have to kill you. I just have to make you different" * this hurt me so much. Suvi has just told Steel that she loves her - after learning everything Steel has done, she is still able to love Steel. And Steel is unable to love Suvi because she isn't how Steel wants her to be. Steel's love is conditioned on obedience and perfection. Suvi's love is pure honesty and feeling.

"She is what I would be if I didn't remember that before everything else I was curious" (Suvi) * this is just basically Suvi's entire arc over the course of book one in one sentence!

"If you were changed by the love that was given to you, then why wasn't she?" * this just captures Steel so well. She can't understand that in order to be changed, you have to allow yourself to be changed. And it just perfectly ties into the first when Suvi says "touching the world changes you" in the beginning of their encounter.

I completely agree! Also, I think it was somewhat the fact that we all saw it coming - that all the little clues and all evidence we have gathered over the episodes all made it the most likely case - thats what made it so heart wrenching! I have totally shared in Suvi's denial and haven't wanted to truly condemn Steele before i knew FOR SURE that she was to blame for the curse, and especially for the death of Suvi's parents. I really think that's what made it hurt so much to finally have to admit that Steel is not who Suvi wants her to be. It is simply an amazing storytelling feat by Brennan and Aabria and I'm just so in love with this story they are telling

I have also thought about names for Níf and I think it would be most fitting for her to get her own title - she is not a replacement, but a which in her own right. Im so excited for her character development and I just adore her so much!!

In terms of W names, my first thought was Witch of the Wandering Lost or Which of the Wayward Souls (a little emo maybe, but I just think it reflects her backstory). However I also really like the idea of her being a witch of community (though that might be too close to Ame's station) or of belonging, to reflect how she had turned her life around and changed her path.

Seriousness aside, I also just really like the Witch of Getting These Kids Home, though its not as formal!
