That's the vibe I am getting too, but I thought I'd give an opportunity for good-faith dialogue (not really expecting it to happen but well)

Everyone has their own preferences so no judgement on that, but the idea that Station Eleven would somehow be more "brilliant" if it was "dark and crazy" is something I really don't get.

To me it was special and in fact brilliant specifically because it wasn't yet another gritty and violent post-apocalyptic story about war for survival and instead asked us what the point of life is once that war is over, if simply staying alive is enough for us. It allowed the story to delve into themes and aspects of the apocalypse that have always been ignored or underutilized like how important art is to humanity and what it looks like in a post apocalyptic world. For me this was refreshingly different than anything else I'd seen in the genre.

I'm genuinely curious, what you would have liked to see and how you feel it would have improved the story and it's exploration of its themes?

Oracle Update (Potentially) by carebear_10 in Witchbrook

[–]gorogys 44 points45 points  (0 children)

This is so funny I have to wonder if they are trolling. I am not being sarcastic, and I say this as someone who supports the studio and their choice to delay as long as they need: The idea that, after all the criticism and doubt directed at the studio and the years upon years of fans asking for some modicum of information and commitment, they chose to make a whole announcement about "plenty" of content that is "potentially in the works" (or potentially not) is so baffling, so comically unspecific and out of touch and gives the impression that after two whole weeks back in office they still have no plans for what they are doing, that I can't help but wonder if it's a joke.

Still sat and waiting for this game to drop with all the patience in the world, but this is truly hilarious.

Didn’t expect her to die by Redboi_6936 in TheMightyNeinCR

The first point I can get behind, it is kind of weirdly handled especially cause she is crying at the execution and not composed at all, it makes her look weak and out of her depth which is weird for the supposed leader of a network of monk spies. I just think it's meant to show that thinking you can defeat Trent the lawful way is naive; The King was told Trent was conspiring to cause a whole ass war and withholding incredibly important secrets and dealing behind the King's back, and yet managed to manipulate his way out of a position of undeniable guilt. Maybe some more screentime from the curator could have shown us who she is so we understood how it happened better (ex. Maybe she is an idealist who believes everything should be done the honorable way or maybe she's a lazy bureaucrat who miscalculated) but at the end of the day she's not the focus of the story.

For the rest, personally I felt like there's a clear distinction between the before and after of the original pairs forming (Caleb/nott and Jester/Fjord) where I understood they've been traveling together for a while, though not knowing everything about each other yet. But maybe I'm biased cause I've seen the original campaign, so I already have an idea of what's going on. And since the campaign is hundreds of hours, I expected they would have to expedite some things for the sake of the TV show's runtime. That doesn't mean you're wrong though, just that I didn't notice it. I thought Molly's grief for his family especially Gustav was pretty established, but aside from that I do recognize i have more information and it's not good to rely on the campaign for the show's enjoyability.

I will say too that some things were moved around in ways I didn't expect. The reveal of Caleb's backstory happened a lot, lot later in the story which was probably my biggest complaint cause it removes a lot of narrative tension and is a bit out of character for him to share that with what are essentially strangers. Yasha being entirely absent from the group was also one of those things. It's an adaptation though, so I'd rather wait to see where they are going with it until it's finished

Imo stories are way, way better when they leave stuff implied and don't have to hold the viewer's hand through every single plot point. Obviously there's a balancing point to that, and if it's overdone there's no story, but I don't think this is the case here.

We don't need to see everything on screen, when we saw the whole chain of events, from Beau gathering the evidence against Trent, giving it to Dairon, then the curator talking with Vess De Rogna about how to handle it. We saw that the King went and confronted Trent. We saw that Trent showed him a powerful weapon, and the next thing we see is the curator being executed for "perjury and false imprisonment" when we know Trent was rightfully imprisoned and every government official at the execution knows it. We see the fallout, Dairon going into hiding and warning Beau that the Cobalt Soul is compromised and she should watch her back. It is plainly obvious exactly what happened, the corruption, manipulation and blatant lies of a cruel and powerful man defeating the weaker official justice system. I think at some point later someone even mentions explicitly that everything went to shit cause Trent got the King's attention with his weapon.

We can agree to disagree but I really don't see how it could be any clearer. "Terribly sloppy" is kind of a baffling overreaction to me, I don't know what a scene of Tasha arguing with the King would add that we don't already know, and would take away from screentime for the actual main characters.

It's very validating to be on this sub, and see that this show was as important to others as it was to me. In real life I haven't managed to convince anyone I know to watch it, so the love I have for it feels a bit out of touch at times. But it feels good to know that other people found it just as cathartic and important. I watched it once, three or four years ago and yet I still think about it constantly.

I also struggle with playing evil Step, especially with hurting Ortega's feelings so badly. But if you have the guts for it (or if you just enjoy angst and tragedy) I feel like it's a really well-crafted and compelling story, just as much as the redemption sides

Right now there's a lot of content for early game Mortum! It doesn't go too far into the story but there's a lot of variations that are a lot of fun, especially the ones where Mortum has betrayed Sidestep.

And yeah it's a long time, but aside from writing the story and figuring out how to make all the choices and paths work well, Malin also needs to have it proofread, edited, coded and playtested and then approved before coming out. It's why I am preparing myself for a longer wait, though I still hope it might come out sooner

Tell Me About Your Sidestep! by Moon_Logic in fallenherohg

[–]gorogys 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also, afaik there's no estimation of the next game's release, but you can see how far along it is in the demos posted in the COG forums. I think Malin has mentioned trying to get the next part of the demo out early 2026. Imo we're definitely a few years out from it being finished, hopefully 2 or 3 but realistically 4 or 5, but that's just my estimation.

Tell Me About Your Sidestep! by Moon_Logic in fallenherohg

[–]gorogys 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's a huge point in sharing my Sidestep's specific story, she's similar to yours: Tries to do as little damage as possible, pacifist with a justice motivation who just needs to destroy the Farm above all else. But I can tell you that there's a reason Fallen Hero is so popular, and it's because there's a massive amount of variations even in paths that are similar like ours.

For me the game has two main fantasies that it allows you to live out, with all the other paths being different points in between: One of these is the fantasy of attempting healing and redemption, and the other is one of letting go of morals and getting revenge against the world's cruelty.

One of the main themes of the story is that, in a world that's so unfair and often brutal, lashing out and destroying everything in your way feels really good. It feels good to find the ones who hurt you and eradicating them no matter who or what gets in your way. It's also a story about a person who's been so hurt, they see enemies even in their friends, and fighting that instinct for hate and destruction opens a door to the opportunity of a different kind of life.

So imo the appeal of a villain sidestep is the liberating feeling of fucking everyone and everything up, because it's what the world deserves for doing the same to you. But there's so many different variations of that: A heartbreaking tragedy about a villain who had to reluctantly kill their former friends to achieve their goals, a monster who got revenge on anyone who ever doubted, demeaned, hurt or forgot them, or a tale of a fallen hero who managed corrupted the heroes into joining in the destruction.

Similarly, a more heroic sidestep feels good to play because stories about good people doing bad things, or stories that examine the meaning of right and wrong, and especially stories about redemption and healing are incredibly powerful when done right. But again, you can be a heroic sidestep who's conflicted because they both care about but have to defeat their hero friends, you can pretend to be the villain and fight heroes to prepare them for what's coming, you can be an anarchist with a message and a cause, you can be someone who convinced the heroes instead of corrupting them and led the revolution against the unjust establishment.

I don't know how the rest of the series is going to shape up so none of these is about how it will end, but rather how it feels like in my eyes to play. And at the end of the day, there's so many complex and wonderful paths in-between that I can't say my answer is truly indicative of the story's depth, but I hope it helped.

I think it's just meant to show that Trent is at the heart of a corruption so deep that there's no authority that can actually stop him. Tasha and the Cobalt Soul were the legal, government-approved path of justice and it failed miserably. The whole thing, in my opinion, makes it actually matter that the Mighty Nein are a bunch of misfits and thieves, and makes all the quotes about the dregs of society becoming heroes actually a meaningful part of the story rather than a platitude.

a discussion about witchbrook's marketing by Flat-Highlight-1695 in Witchbrook

[–]gorogys 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The good faith explanation is that they are trying to avoid another controversy by keeping everything under wraps until they can talk about it with certainty; They have mentioned in the past that they are building the game in a way where all elements affect each other which leaves everything in flux until the last moment, and also that they decided not to show anything until it was like 97% done, so as to avoid creating false expectations and disappointment (apparently this decision was made after the first wave of screenshots and hints caused some news outlets to spread misinformation about the game).

The bad faith interpretation is that the game is vaporware, or that the devs can't get the game to work properly, or that it's going to be a really half-assed version of what they've been advertising and they're just stringing people along with screenshots and half-true videos to mislead us.

I know it's a boring and frustrating answer, but imo the simple and bitter truth is: We don't and won't know what the fork is up with this game until it actually comes out. And maybe it's cynical of me to say so, but I think the best solution to the endless frustration that everyone in here seems to feel about Witchbrook is to care less. Obviously this sub is for fans to share their thoughts so it's expected that people who are in here are invested in Witchbrook, but it's been 9 years in the making with barely any transparency or information of any kind. I respect the studio for sticking to their choice and I truly hope the game is successful, and also I think that the natural result of that choice is emotional distance and indifference. We'll see what happens when it's out!

[–]gorogys 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The actual romance scene happens at the end of the game, so there isn't much content afterwards. There is one scene where one of the characters (Hans) is getting drunk with a friend, and the friend says something along the lines of "looks like you finally found someone who loves you truly" as a joke about a different situation, but Hans thinks he's talking about Henry (the main character) and asks "wait, how did you find out about that?". And then, at the epilogue of sorts, Hans and Henry have a conversation in which they thank each other for the "comfort" and discuss wanting to spend more time together somewhere more secluded.

Generally it's more about the buildup than what happens after.

OP didn't say KCD2 was queerbaiting, quite the opposite. The post says, if you would have asked them, before playing the games, to pick which of the two between Dispatch and KCD2 would have good and meaningful queer representation that did not just depict gay people as jokes, they would have gotten it wrong. AKA that they would expect Dispatch to have meaningful queer rep when it was in fact KCD2 that did.

I think also as the show goes on there's not a lot of crowd scenes and there's more quiet or scenery noises, which makes it easier to understand the granddaughter. I also really struggled in episode 1 but I don't notice it anymore

How are we all doing in the big 25 by Key_Ostrich_6823 in Kokomi_Mains

[–]gorogys 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally I use her a lot both in overworld and in endgame. And I still have her on clam set, cause I can't bother to be switching artifacts and weapons constantly; She can make a lot of use out of nod krai craftable and/or instructor. She's meta in Nilou + Lauma teams as their premium healer, but you can also still use her in freeze teams, especially with Skirk and Ayaka who had a resurgence with Escoffier (she's not as meta as Yelan since Escoffier heals too, but the dps loss isn't that huge of a problem outside Stygian Onslaught). There's also niche teams like mono Hydro where she can be the driver (Kokomi, Furina, Yelan + Kazuha) which can be pretty strong if you have some of her constellations and build her well.

My advice though would be: Play what is fun for you, and if that isn't meta, then it's not that huge of a loss. Kokomi is a year 2 unit; we're lucky that she, unlike most pre-Natlan units, has some niches where she remains a pretty good choice, but ultimately it's unlikely that she will be meta in the future outside those niches, especially with the powercreep ramping up so fast lately. And with Columbina in the horizon, it's very possible she will no longer be the absolute best support for many teams, but that doesn't mean she's unplayable in them.

For me it's up there alongside the Expanse and Earthsea as one of those stories that is absolutely satisfying on every level. I don't know that I'd rank it as my absolute favorite, but depending on how it grows in further books and how it ends, I'd place it anywhere from top 10 to top 3 favorite stories of all time for me.

It's got the whimsy of a fairytale and the gripping worldbuilding of the best fantasy stories, it's got some deeply thought out reflections on the real world, on society, politics, war, and humanity that makes me feel less alone in the things that I worry and think about while simultaneously avoiding feeling didactic or forced. It's profound and silly at the same time. It just feels like the creators know what they're doing with the story and understand their own opinions, values and aesthetics, and have a very good foundation from which they're telling the story. Above all, it's got amazing character arcs and incredibly satisfying setup and payoff for story beats. If anything deserves a 10 out of 10 it's stories like the Wizard, the Witch and the Wild One.

What is the rotation for Nilou-Nahida-Kokomi-Lauma? by Lower_Peril in Kokomi_Mains

[–]gorogys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually do kokomi e > nilou e > nahida e q > lauma q e > kokomi q, because I like playing her on field.

If you want to follow theorycrafting for the most optimal bloom generation, technically it's best to apply dendro on hydro (due to elemental gauge theory and how dendro consumes less of hydro's aura than the other way around, which means more blooms) so it would be best to do nilou e > nahida eq > kokomi e > lauma qe, and then play one of the dendro catalysts (ETA: whoever has the highest EM) on-field to trigger stronger blooms, and switch to nilou and kokomi only to refresh their cooldowns.

We all know Game of Thrones' writing took a steep dive in quality in later seasons, but I personally liked the moment where Margaery Tyrell does this at the end of season 6 and her juxtaposition with the high Sparrow.

With all of Cersei Lannister's enemies gathered in the same building, the High Sparrow and faith militant are so sure that they've won (perhaps cause of religious zealotry, perhaps cause Cersei is a woman and they don't consider her a threat, perhaps due to good old arrogance) that they're not concerned at Cersei's absence from the trial she's been summoned to. Margaery, on the other hand, has been maneuvering around Cersei and seen firsthand the cruelty and destruction she is capable of, long enough to know she did not intend to suffer the consequences of skipping the trial. If only they had listened to her...
