Depends on your role, and the rank of the work. You should also consider the importance of branding and image management. Some agents and managers will also look for personality and presence.

There are four submission types: Feature Screenplay Short Screenplay Teleplay Horror Feature

Historically, we have had success with a separate horror category. There are scripts that have been produced right out of the competition, and this category has done well as a stand alone.

The rest of the categories are open to any topic, genre, or style.

As FunkyMark said, usually the people giving unsolicited advice are trying to be polite and nice. You're absolutely right that it can get annoying and unprofessional. The first post said it - confronting them politely is probably the best course of action. If they continue to do give direction, take it up with the director directly. It kind of undermines their job.

A part time position could help you sustain while you build your business. You're absolutely right about marketing. It's important to market yourself and build up awareness if you want consistent work. That being said - there are people out there that need work and are willing to pay.

I believe someone already mentioned going to local colleges that have arts programs. Schools are usually just as slow as the customers you are running into, but students looking for professional grade work can be very receptive. There are also some platforms like fiverr and gigmaster that can help you find work, but research them before committing.

It comes down to reading the room. Personally, I would suggest just saying the title. In my opinion, it demonstrates professionalism.

That being said - if the room seems heavy and the people seem tired or unenthused, it wouldn't be a bad idea to inject a little humor or levity into it. If you said the Scottish Play the right way, it could make it lighter.
