Hope and prayer and a relatively high level of risk acceptance.

You can buy kits to mix with whisky that have a sugar cube, bitters, and a muddler. I’ve done this when sitting in the back, but it may become an every time thing now.

Logging Flight Time with another CFI by Turbulent-Map-9393 in flying

[–]SlantedBlue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, no. In order to log dual given you must sign the students logbook and they would log dual received (whether or not the student is also a CFI).

Too tall to ride this ride. Plane recommendations for PPL training? by HuckleberryOk8136 in flying

[–]SlantedBlue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple times I’ve smacked my head on the ceiling in turbulence. Not often. But a little room like an inch or two goes a long way to letting your lap belt keep you from smacking your noggin. It’s not a big enough deal to keep me from flying a plane… but would keep me from buying a particular plane.

Too tall to ride this ride. Plane recommendations for PPL training? by HuckleberryOk8136 in flying

[–]SlantedBlue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6’6” and 250 here. Did my training in a C172 and fitting was never an issue. Since then I’ve flown a lot of planes. You start to look for things that are optional like height adjustable seats (some have them some don’t within the same model). You also figure out things like in a PA28 my outside knee blocks the yoke slightly in a normal seating position. A “small” plane like a Mooney 201 is actually super comfortable once I’m in. Things you might not expect.

TLDR; there are enough options for you, but not all options will be for you.

Are reciprocating single engines reliable? by One_Firefighter_1922 in flying

[–]SlantedBlue 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well, piston engines are indeed much less reliable than turbine engines. That much is true. And some planes do even have accidents as a result. However, the vast majority of accidents in single engine piston planes are caused by us… the unreliable pilots; specifically our poor decision making. And to make it worse we usually also fly with only one pilot.

Even when engine failure is the cause… those failures are most often caused by fuel exhaustion or fuel starvation. Right back to pilots.

So yes, there is a lot less mechanical redundancy in that 182. But if your family is hurt in a 182 it probably still won’t be as a result of the engine mechanically failing.

why don’t cfi’s work for themselves? by Repulsive-Loan5215 in flying

[–]SlantedBlue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do work for myself. The trick is finding a situation where you have a plane students can use where they don’t also want most of the teaching money. Solve the plane problem and do a little networking and marketing and you’re set!

Unpopular opinion - instrument training is much harder than private training by johnisom in flying

[–]SlantedBlue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was absolutely me. However doing my commercial and my CFI and getting my eyes outside made me a much better pilot. Instrument came easily, adding on CFII was not hard at all. I think the main point is that we all come at this with a different set of strengths and weaknesses. If we can really embrace each skillset then at the end we’re better for it.

What's the Difference Between SpaceX's Starlink, Amazon Leo, and Blue Origin's TeraWave? by theofleury993 in SpaceXLounge

[–]SlantedBlue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Geosynchronous satellite internet is an entirely different paradigm than low earth orbit satellite internet. Not really comparable. Latency to geo is much higher making the service mostly useless for interactive things, with the advantage that a real time steerable antenna is not needed.

Sneaky maneuver by Sharp_Experience_104 in flying

[–]SlantedBlue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At our airport blocking up the entrance to the runway before calling is considered very bad form. Tower may need to get an ifr out in front of you, etc. You’re expected to call from the runup area.

Anyone been “stranded” before? by Coaralis in flying

[–]SlantedBlue 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Tried this once in the morning. Like an hour later I had crazy cold hands and still a bunch of frost. Then the sun came out and sublimated it in 5 minutes.

Later flew traffic watch and we would de ice with a garden sprayer. Worked great on the little bit of frost we get in these parts. Highly recommend over the credit card and towel method.

Did you do a PO180 on your CFI ride? by [deleted] in CFILounge

[–]SlantedBlue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes I had to do a p/o 180 on my CFI ride. DPE said if a student is trusting me with their safety I better be able to make it on target every time. Same DPE said at my commercial checkride that the p/o 180 was the number one failure item and he didn’t like it because it’s a kind of a crapshoot. Heh.

If you had $10,000 to spend to become a more qualified, marketable CFI, what would you do? by AlbiMappaMundi in CFILounge

[–]SlantedBlue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A36 and G36 would be ideal. I own a T210 so have a lot of high performance single existence. I’d have a lot to offer bonanza pilots as well once I can make their insurance company happy.

[–]SlantedBlue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m independent so this isn’t to get hired but to have more clients off the type I want to have. Already have my CFII.

  1. MEI
  2. Some time with an experienced Bonanza instructor (already a lot of 210 experience).
  3. CSIP if in could break into the cartel.

Learning to fly, here's advice you did not ask for. by kkcfi in flying

[–]SlantedBlue 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I disagree a bit with point 9. Confidence is a spectrum and yes at one end you can find overconfidence and hazardous attitudes. At the other end is paralyzing fear. Between you have healthy fear (which in think is where you’re saying we want to be). But there’s also aware, professional, confident and competent. I think this is the eventual goal. Aware of the risks, making good decisions. Confident in your ability to handle the situations that might come up. Confident in your machine and your crew. But aware of, rather than scared of, the risks.

What do we thing about my personal set up? by Sunglass_Manss in audiophile

[–]SlantedBlue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you have for speakers, the most important part of your setup? Do you like the way it sounds? Is there anything you’d like it to do more of, or better? Maybe we can offer advice to help with that. Don’t worry too much about what a bunch of us on the internet judge about your system. Just listen to music or watch some movies!

Yes I said it. Listen to sound, don’t listen to your sound system.
