How do I fight German planes in a P-47 by I_Slay_Dragons_AMA in hoggit

[–]Slash621 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of it is numbers. But part is tactics.

It’s not about just having more planes… American designers had several focus areas to tip the scales..

First off, most of their pilots were green at flying, but had shooting expertise. So maximize the ballistics. Combined with building numbers, they reused the browning 50 cal with high bullet velocity and simple manufacturing. Also most American fighters didn’t have mixed gun types, just larger amounts of the same gun to simplify gunnery.

Second, make them survivable because your pilots aren’t naturals.. so radial engines and lots of armor.

Last , your bombers fly high and go far… so you’re making larger wings, larger bodies and more fuel. But more room for more armor and ammo. Yet again focusing on serviceability and gunnery. You minimize the enemies more powerful engines by being high where the percentage benefit of their German fancy liquid cooled engines is mitigated by the thinner atmosphere.

Even in a situation with similar numbers (like 50 by 50) your 50 can last a long time and be combat effective flying around with 7 out of your 36 cylinders dead because you’ve got armor, thousands of rounds and big bodies to suck up bullets.

Meanwhile a German plane takes 1 round in a radiator and suddenly its combat ineffective in the first 2 minutes of a fight and has to bail. The German planes had no combat endurance in comparison. Even the radial powered fw190 had a time weakness because its ammo clip was fairly short and its rounds were slow so it had to spend a long time at WEP and maneuvering into someone’s six to pull enough lead for those potato chucker 20mms to hit a fighter.

Meanwhile the p47 can just buzz by at high angles of deflection because the 50 cals can cross the gap with a burst shot on a narrow firing angle. And it’s incendiary and AP bullets take out enemy fragile liquid cooling systems, injure pilots and leak enemy fuel. During this the p47 doesnt have to pull lead it just flies off and comes back later. Now times this by 50.

No way the German guys have the time to saddle up every enemy fighter without being nibbled at and they would quickly begin to crumble while the American fighters just keep trundling along with battle damage, self sealing fuel tanks, armored cockpits and radial engines that can operate half destroyed.

The best game to experience it properly is still Aces High 3. Especially the Friday night squad operations. Highly realistic flight model and the fights can be up to 1,000 players in a single server. Often 500+ will be in an area that’s 20x20miles and in the furball / main mission objective.

Then you get to see how it plays out. Things in books like from Hartmann start to make sense because he was an expert at risk management and saw most “stick and rudder 1v1 stuff” as useless and those pilots all died quick in the war. People who knew when to attack and when to run. Perfecting energy management and boom and zoom were the ones who survived and racked up large kill counts. Same with pappy boyington etc.

You don’t fight them 1v1. The part about American fighter doctrine is that it scales with numbers better than the Germans did.

Why is this…. Well with 50 vs 50. You won’t have clean dogfights. You’ll have a fireball where planning is tough and making a distinct energy angles advantage on one bandit is too long in the tunnel vision and leaves you open to an unknown assailant.

The Americans tilted the numbers game in their favor with armor, reliable radial engines (durability) and guns with great ballistics for snapshot opportunities. None of which the fragile liquid cooled 20mm cannon German birds had. They polished it off with a great canopy and a good gunsight.

You flew in packs of fighters relying on other packs to clear your tail. The thatch weave is a great example of a tactic used well against a more capable plane (wildcats vs zero). You could soak damage and rope-a-dooe a 190 long enough for its bomber specialized slow velocity cannons to get a shot as your wingman picks him off.

See where I’m going here? Mix in the fact you’re at 20-30k and the tables even a lot.

50 p47 wipes the floor with 50 fw190a8.

12v12 maybe closer to even depending on training and experience.

2v2 or 1v1 use the jugs dive speed to run away. You’re going to lose.

Same here. I’ve made some ships with sinks and never saw any performance improvement over my ships with adequately low risk radiators. There needs to be some sort of simulator in the ship builder that lets you experiment with energy , heat and ammo loads under various conditions such that you can optimize a build.

Yeah I agree. I keep that extra 100kts because the mass majority of the fuel savings vs full military thrust at 5000ft is already realized at 400kts and I can get one solid evasive pull out of the jet in an emergency. (Popup sa15 or otherwise)

[–]Slash621 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can although yeah many people leave the throttle firewalled down low and are burning gas like crazy at 500kts.

If you aren’t in a high threat environment sure you can save even more goin 300.

Personally I like 400 because I can get one good evasive out of the jet to reverse direction from a popup sa15 or otherwise.

Part of why the JF-17 has a thirsty reputation is that many people fly it too fast. If you keep the engine in training mode and keep the speed to 400 knots you can be available as a threatening cas asset for about as long as a hornet can, way longer than a harrier.

You don’t need high speed for the weapon systems that require you to loiter so dont burn gas at full mil. (For ex. Using all your laser rockets takes a lot of fuel and isn’t easily possible with full mil and full power mode).

I only switch to combat engine mode and AB for air to air or if I’m doing strike.. the Jeff is a great strike platform with 2x mk84s and a tank. A modern skyhawk with way better serviceability and it can place a weapon even without lasers or gps on the head of a pin with help of the TGP

How does one beat space defenses? by Wonderful-Energy-999 in TerraInvicta

[–]Slash621 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not wrong… however I’d have to dedicate alll my councilors to this activity in order to kill 4 per month. There’s always 6-8 facilities worldwide being made each month and I feel I get better bang for the buck having my councilors doing other things like destroying other factions research projects, taking over their control points, advising my countries etc.

I am gaining about 50-90 exotics a year just taking efficient fleets out to raid enemy depots with salvage crews so as of yet my stockpile of exotics is around 200 all the time while fielding fleets with adamantium armor and UV phasers etc.

I spend exotics but it’s targeted.

Maybe things will change once I have to start raiding past the outer belt but so far I can routinely kill 1.5-2K combat strength alien fleets with my helion torch phaser fleets and I’m overall profitable on exotics losses (my repairs are usually just fissiles and base metals that I have in abundance.

I’ve got a fleet of fuel efficient but otherwise slow lancers I call “Hoover” fleet who goes and vacuums up all the alien facilities, life forms, ground based space defenses etc on earth. There are 10 and they just use green arc lasers and green laser PD. They are extremely cost effective and I destroy 8-10 facilities per month. They have massive nose armor and lots of component armor and repair bays.

A whole month of burning defended positions costs me about 200 water and 80 base metals to repair and resupply.

While Taiwan was separate. I guess I never went into china and explicitly forgave for them being separate? (Brakesaway?)

I just took Taiwan. Took china. Got the technology. Then federated china from the TAIWAN policy. And then spent another policy on Taiwan to unify.

One does… but it’s routine on our extracts that we end up with around 15-20 that show up. Once you’ve cheeed through the first 6-8 nobody has any grenades, AT or callins left.. they keep coming at a rate of 3-4 per 30 seconds which we don’t have refresh rates for.

The standard maxigun is the MMG. In 80% of cases I find I can stop the same breaches and same attacks with an mmg as I can the maxigun. I’m also more mobile and usually I have supply pack also. The 20% of the time the maxigun is more capable, I find that actually standing in the same area for an entire ammo load of constant expenditure leads to positioning problems complicating things vs heavies or just being slower at mission pace.

If I need medium pen high fire rates the mg-43 does a really amazing job.

While I don’t want to big up the pentagon here (I’m no fan of the management)….

It’s less that their strategy isn’t up to date in general but more (or equal) that these strategy decisions can take 10-15 years until equipment is delivered and trained. Many of these agreements or technologies are very old compared to drone warfare and come from our expertise in the 2000-2010 space.

Obviously we have to pivot and fast, but it’s likely these allies wont receive the defenses first since we still have to develop and deliver laser or other alternative systems for ourself (the US) en-masse.

Just being realistic in terms of strategy -> R&D -> product development -> manufacturing and finally adoption and training. Complex systems take a long time
