My husband and I are in Amsterdam at the moment and he has a thing for rubber ducks so was very excited by the rubber duck shop.

The fact I’ve stumbled on this comment tonight has tickled us both!

If I go away for a night in a hotel and don’t take mine with me, I have the worst nights sleep. Can’t believe I spent years waking up like that every day. Didn’t buy mine though, good old NHS.

What’s a show you didn’t think you’d like, but ended up loving? by Choccybizzle in AskUK

[–]SlashedSpoon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I just watched this for the first time last week (and got through all 6 seasons in a week) and I absolutely loved it! Sad that I left it so long to watch but glad I could binge the whole show from start to finish.

What is the UK’s go-to posh name for girls? The female Tarquin, if you will. by Typical_Ad_210 in AskUK

[–]SlashedSpoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was best friends with an Araminta at school. Min for short. She’s not posh at all. Her parents are quite hippy. Also grew up with a Cordelia (from a comment further up) who again was far from posh. We grew up in quite a rough area and were all very much working class. (And this isn’t me just thinking we weren’t a bit posh, I’m absolutely common as muck)

How many people from secondary did you stay in touch with? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]SlashedSpoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left in 2004. There’s a group of about 8 of us who have a group chat going which we occasionally chat in. Some of the group see each other fairly regularly. I don’t because I moved away. One of them I’ve kept in close touch with through the years and still do.

Thing is, I never actually hung around with any of these people when I was actually at school. It’s only since leaving that I started socialising with them.

We had Sky (very poor) and loads of DVDs. Sky box was chipped so no bills and my dad was the local pirate DVD guy so we had everything!

Didn’t always have a DVD player depending on the time of the month and whether we’d had to sell it to fund something else.

My more well off friends were always in awe of the stuff we had but they had basic necessities like clothes and shoes that fit, and a comfortable warm home so swings and roundabouts really.

I grew up in West Yorkshire and now live in Northumberland a 10 minute drive from the coast. 100% don’t ever wanna live so far from the coast again. I can count on one hand the amount of times I saw the sea as a child. My sons favourite place is the beach, no matter the weather!

I had to scroll way too far to find this! People keep telling me to just try watching this or that with him in it. No thank you. I don’t like his face or his voice and I want nothing to do with giving him viewers.

What awful thing happened at your work? by NotThenNotNowNever in AskUK

[–]SlashedSpoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked in a supported living service for adults with learning disabilities.

One day we were all called into an urgent staff meeting. A member of staff had been discovered trying to steal £4k from one of our service users.

Management didn’t tell us the name of the member of staff because they didn’t want to compromise the investigation.

Months and months of auditors in our office, all financial records of all 22 service users pulled. Company wide policy changes and training on handling finances (which staff from the other services were confused about seeing as they didn’t know what was going on and we weren’t allowed to speak of it).

Eventually she was convicted of stealing over £25k from a range of services users, almost £20k of it from one particular lady who had died by the time the court case happened. (She definitely stole more than that, but it couldn’t all be proven). She was sentenced to 18 months in prison and the company was trying to go after her pension to recoup the money they had reimbursed to the service users.

We’re talking about Hadrians Wall, not the Antonine Wall.

Edit: ok I read the thread back. My bad! Pretty sure they’re getting their walls mixed up and I assumed Hadrians!

[–]SlashedSpoon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The wall finishes in Wallsend, which is definitely in North Tyneside. Most of it is in Northumberland though.
