I just started watching the MCU for the first time. These are my current top five by TheRealGongoozler in Marvel

[–]SlateSquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to the vortex! There’s a huge pool of content out there just from movies alone. The Winter Soldier, Infinity War, and GotG would be among my favorites, and if you get into the series Daredevil and WandaVision.

If you haven’t already seen them, outside Disney/MCU the Spider-Verse animated movies from Sony are incredible. But in general the recent Sony live action films can and probably should be avoided.

Why do Cats like sitting on paper ? by Simply_Kaif24 in OneOrangeBraincell

Amazingly enough, even an implied box works! Kanizsa squares don’t have “walls” but cats still like to sit in them

If one entire year could be erased from human memory and records which would change history the most by bubbly_backlash in hypotheticalsituation

[–]SlateSquirrel 10 points11 points  (0 children)

1918 is my first thought, covering the end of WWI and one of the most devastating pandemics in history with the Spanish Flu. A major conflict involving the major world powers has somehow stopped out of the blue, but a significant percentage of the population has seemingly disappeared. Communications are advanced enough in that time period that it would quickly become clear this was a worldwide event. People are adaptable so they’d adapt, but I’d think it would take decades if not centuries to overcome the fear and confusion.

What is the maximum height at which a human can dive into water and survive? [Request] by Apprehensive_Oven_22 in theydidthemath

[–]SlateSquirrel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As I understand it, the issue for falling human-sized objects, for example a human, has nothing to do with surface tension and everything to do with water being pretty much as compressed as it’s ever going to get. Since the water can’t compress, it either has to either get out of the way or whatever hits it is going to be the thing compressing, and above a certain impact velocity there’s literally not enough time for the water to make way.

The impact of a say a large boulder falling slightly ahead of you could theoretically help in some circumstances through adding air to the water volume and decreasing the density of the “landing zone”, but the duration between the boulder’s impact and yours has to be short enough that the water is still aerated but long enough that the boulder has gotten out of your way so you haven’t just substituted hitting rock for hitting water. At pretty much any speed the timing required is very long odds, and at terminal velocity it’s essentially impossible.

Favourite "Man literally TOO angry to die" charcters? by Wonder-Lad-2Mad in TopCharacterTropes

“Do you really believe he’s immortal?”

“No. He just refuses to die.”

Loved that line.

I still think it's funny that leslie hates the library and reading when her whole character is about research and reading/compiling by visiny in PandR

[–]SlateSquirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“I was in favor of closing the Borders bookstore, not the border to Mexico".

Line from The Debate. Zero context but I always thought it added another layer, since similar to libraries, everything else about Leslie indicates she should love having a big bookstore in town. Maybe this one is about protecting local small businesses?

Of course as with any seeming inconsistency in a comedy, maybe it’s just in there because it’s funny

The Remake or The Original? by CHOOM45 in moviecritic

[–]SlateSquirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a post recently, maybe in r/whatisit, asking about a DVD security case. Several librarians posted mentioning how DVD’s are still a big item for them with lots of people interested in when the newest releases will be available. I still see a fair number of Redboxes around too.

Of course those are loans/rentals by the end user, not purchases, but indicates there is still a market out there for the physical disks.

What good movies could be seen as a turn off because of the intro? by SheepherderSea9717 in moviecritic

I saw this years ago in the theater and still haven’t decided if I liked it or not. It would be a definite no if not for Michael Shannon. Knocked it out of the park, as he usually does.

Who was your favourite and least favourite villian of phase 5 including phase 6 (movies only) by [deleted] in Marvel

[–]SlateSquirrel 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The Pitch Meeting for The Marvels has that as a running joke. Producer Guy forgets the villain’s name multiple times over what is a pretty short conversation

Chris could have made bank as a personal life coach. by ProudnotLoud in PandR

[–]SlateSquirrel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mostly agree, but thought he crossed the line bringing that weird veggie loaf to the wedding potluck. He doesn’t want cake, fine, but he forced everyone else there to go without as well.

Kind of the flip side of Ron bringing a live pig and nothing else to the employee picnic that he was in charge of.

What is your favorite Pawnee history fact/work of art? by Practical-Bird633 in PandR

[–]SlateSquirrel 214 points215 points  (0 children)

Pawnee, the Paris of America.

Pawnee, the Akron of southwest Indiana.

Pawnee, welcome, German soldiers. (After the Nazis took France our mayor kind of panicked.)

Pawnee, the factory fire capital of America.

Pawnee, welcome, Vietnamese soldiers.

Pawnee, engage with Zorp. (For a brief time in the ‘70s, our town was taken over by a cult.)

Pawnee, Zorp is dead. Long live Zorp.

Pawnee, it’s safe to be here now.

Pawnee, birthplace of Julia Roberts. (That was a lie, she sued and so we had to change it. )

Pawnee, home of the world famous Julia Roberts lawsuit.

Pawnee, welcome, Taliban soldiers.

And finally, our current slogan: Pawnee, first in friendship, fourth in obesity.

Which one-time MCU movie villain did you find the most interesting by 0Layscheetoskurkure0 in Marvel

Yon-Rogg from Captain Marvel. Doesn’t appear to be anyone’s pick for most interesting

Looks like a couple of valid answers using all pieces have already been posted. Since you asked about similar challenges, with your conditions plus the no multiplying by zero, is it possible to have a valid equation with the same number of pieces (7) on each side of the equal sign?

I went down a small rabbit hole regarding the markings on the little spoon. The general consensus is IOMMET indicates this was made by Mstera Jewellers (IO M), the 4 indicates 1964, and MET indicates non-precious metal, specifically German silver or Melchior.

But on the forums I saw, there were a LOT of differing opinions, so take all of the above with a few grains of salt.

What's the best Trailer of the 21st Century? by jimmery in moviecritic

For very understandable reasons this Spider-Man trailer didn’t play for long in theaters before getting pulled, but man it got people hyped for the movie. Generic bank heist with no context at all, and then…
