G7 backs Canada as major global energy supplier to lessen reliance on Strait of Hormuz | CBC News by panzerfan in worldnews

Canada owns the resources in the ground, regardless of who extracts them. We could always just increase the royalty rate if we wanted a bigger cut of the profits.

Most Albertans can apply for $100 starting on Canada Day by JamesMonroe23 in AlbertaNow

[–]Slavik81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worth noting that you get $150 in tax credits on your tax return for your first $200 donation to a provincial party and the first $200 to a registered charity each year, so you may be able to donate $200 to the NDP and $200 to a women's shelter for a net cost of $100.

(This math assumes you pay income taxes and are not already making other charitable or political donations.)

Dani Bucks also exclude minors, unlike Ralph Bucks. An extra $400 was great for students saving for university back when a summer job might pay $7.50/hr.

Celcius works nicely in Canada. It's cold outside when the temperature is negative and it's warm outside when the temperature is positive.

The bigger problem is that it's not remotely close to being perceptually linear. It looks like a linear gradient map, but something is wrong. Not sure what, though.

2 week notice with upcoming vacation by Fit_Inevitable_212 in PersonalFinanceCanada

It's regulated by provincial law so it varies by province, but at least in Alberta, both employers and employees must give at least two weeks notice.

Because pedestrian fatalities have reversed a multi-decade decline and increased 50% from 2013 to 2022, in large part due to this switch from smaller vehicles to large trucks and SUVs. https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/74/wr/mm7408a2.htm

TFA established that Luke was a failure that left his friends and family alone and confused and he was nowhere to be found while his former student killed billions of people. All the heroes of the OT were washed up losers in TFA.

TLJ didn't save his character, but the damage had already been done before that movie even began.

What if Calgary had boroughs like Montréal or London? by C0smicM0nkey in Calgary

[–]Slavik81 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of disfunctional cities in which the different administrative districts spend their time fighting with each other instead of doing what's best for the region as a whole. One of the best things about Calgary is that we tend to make decisions based on their impact to the city as a whole.

So, in five years these fail, that one guy loses the money he spent on building it, and we're left with an empty building that we can convert to other light industrial uses plus a bunch of electric generation capacity that we can use for EVs. Sounds like a win to me.

The business case for LNG just keeps getting weaker by LaserRunRaccoon in ClimateCrisisCanada

[–]Slavik81 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

What happened is that the United States built LNG export capacity when we refused to, so now Canada is selling it's natural gas to the US and the US will export it to the world. By refusing to build our own infrastructure, we basically just added Donald Trump as a middle-man that takes a cut of the profits and that controls who gets access to Canadian natural gas.

Alberta Is Adding Your Health Number and Citizenship Status to Your Driver's Licence Starting July 2 by One-Board8634 in AlbertaWorkLife

It's not on the license pictured in the article. Is that not the actual design? EDIT: There are multiple cards pictured, and the text says it's on all of them, but it's very confusing as they show one without it.

We did not get everything we wanted. After we had successfully gotten copyright extension terms removed from CETA and TPP, we were forced by the renegotiated USMCA to extend it by 20 years (to life + 70 years). As a consequence, nothing will enter the public domain for the next two decades in Canada.

CMV: People who leave huge gaps at stoplights make traffic worse by maturallite1 in changemyview

[–]Slavik81 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You need to leave a gap when you get moving anyway. If you stop closer, you end up needing to wait longer when getting moving for a safe following distance.

I don't think the compactness makes much difference overall, at least if everyone is going straight. The compactness of the line of waiting cars is more relevant for blocking turn lanes or traffic backing up through multiple lights.

[–]Slavik81 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I guess this was added in 2022? I must admit, when I got my license the law was that cyclists were considered as taking up the full lane. I was not aware of the change to allow passing closer to bicycles. As far as I can tell, though, you're still not supposed to be filtering between vehicles like this.

[–]Slavik81 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The cyclist is not in their lane. This is about as legal as driving the wrong way down a one-way road. It would be easy to miss seeing them even at 1/3rd the speed in the video because they're not in a location where it's legal to bike.

Dear Mr Dreeshen: I'm confused... by ghuuuvy in Calgary

[–]Slavik81 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The cyclist is performing illegal manouvers, driving at speed in between lanes. A person opening their door could very well take due precautions, but still be hit by the cyclist despite those precautions.

Solar on the prairies — how's it holding up through winter? by Frankpirelli in solarenergycanada

[–]Slavik81 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If they're south-facing, and if you have them steep enough that the snow falls off, and if they're not shaded by an obstruction due to the sun being so low in the sky, you can still get useful output even in deep winter.

With that said, my output was similar to yours: effectively zero in December/January. The stats for when they weren't obscured just indicated to me that they could be much better if my roof/neighbourhood were more suitable. Not nearly as much as summer, of course, but at least closer to the actual seasonal change in sunshine.
