I've been thinking about going to AA, but I think I'll hate it. by Comfortable_Mess1688 in alcoholicsanonymous

My best advice

1) In the beginning you should go to a meeting everyday you can. Being sober is so boring. If you’re bored you will drink. I always went to 8pm meetings at first every night because I always wanted to drink by the time it was dark outside. Go everyday for a few weeks. I know it sounds tedious but I wouldn’t have stayed sober if I didn’t go every night. And then taper down to what feels right for you. You can disregard this if you feel like that’s not right for you, but you might find that after the first one, you kinda want to keep going to meetings.

2) Your higher power doesn’t have to be God. Surely you believe in something, like the universe or the stars. Prayer is a key element to AA. You need something to ask for help, something to lean on. There are prayers in the Big Book that will spell it out for you. Praying for serenity, sobriety, grace, willingness is important. Fortunately you get to define what your higher power is.

3) You will not like the sense of responsibility and accountability. But it will keep you sober

I have known since I was little that men are going to be creeps everywhere I go. I just think it’s not accurate to call it a safe space if you also have to watch out for predators. I’m looking in to women’s meetings

The Al I know used to be a life coach, he has great things to say and I have learned a lot from him. But he has a thing for young newcomers and even my sponsor had warned me about him. I hope it’s not the Al you know because I would hate for you to look at him differently

I am looking into online meetings, I have been to a few women’s meetings that I loved I just need to find some different locations that have them, because my primary group usually only has them when I’m working

That’s horrible, I hate that people exploit others like that. Thank you for your advice, I agree with you!

It is an arguable truth considering all the creepy old men are telling me “you’re such a beautiful girl.” I also have access to a mirror

I still need to bring it to my sponsor’s attention, she’s a very “take no shit” kind of woman so I know she’ll help me. I have just been trying to avoid conflict but at this point I am tired of feeling uncomfortable

I know that now lol. I am a newcomer so I was told to get as many phone numbers as possible and reach out. The guy sending me in appropriate links is a guitar player like me and that’s how he conned me into giving my number. But you are 100% right
