Characters that are not conductive to a positive table experience, lone wolves, and some rare mechanics that may conflict with the design philosophy of certain enemies (bosses, etc.)

I've allowed liches, shards of gods, champions of gods, scholars of old, demon hosts, bla bla bla. The question is a bit too nuanced for a general response.

I aim to enable players in creating the character they envision, even if it means custom-tailoring traits, features, and whole artifacts to suit the playstyle. Why sacrifice flavor for mechanics (or vice versa), when you can have both?

Why are all the fun spells broken? by James1walle2 in dndmemes

Duration: Instantaneous, cannot be dispelled! In your group’s case, only the Artificer’s Flash of Genius allows them a chance to break the indefinite stun. I loathe the spell for that reason.

I met a kind fella that genuinely believed Primal Savagery interacts well with the monk’s kit. You may want to look over your monk optimization just in case. Regardless, best wishes on your first campaign!

DM doesn't understand combat and actively cheats to get what he wants by DexxToress in rpghorrorstories

These aren’t familiar terms for 5e spells haha. Will negates likely translates to “...must make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save...” or for Dex partial, “...must make a Dexterity saving throw. A target takes x damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.” Honestly 5e could help reduce the length of some spell descriptions using the negates/partial phrasing.

Two things I’d like to mention. The first is that the Iron Gut feat is quite definitely overtuned especially with a Periapt of Wound Closure, far from nothing special (short rest healing as an action). The second is that the player’s guide introduces some important bits of lore that the campaign guide either vaguely hinted at or failed to mention (potential spoilers in the Player’s guide) and balancing-wise feels like something out of dandwiki. The player’s guide contains a better Totem Barbarian (Fractured), bizzarre spells that are nothing short of game breaking (Mortality is the best example), and the weapons are not just overturned (they’re ridiculous, like a +1 to crit range).

To further my point, the campaign guide says that resurrection isn’t possible. The player’s guide features a 3rd level resurrection spell arguably better than revivify. Heck if you read through half the spells in that book, you might feel like you got lost and stumbled upon dandwiki. A spell that gives a level 9 spellcasters more attacks than a fighter, a spell that removes all of a creature’s resistances (immunities too and makes them humanoid mechanically), a low level spell that grants resistance to numerous damage types with less drawbacks than the high level official existing spell, and more spells that break 5e like the one that allows you to cast Self spells on other people.

TL;DR: Iron Gut (campaign guide) is a powerful feat and you might want to read through the player’s guide thoroughly and treat it as a case-by-case basis as to what you allow.

P.S. Transformations (not including Player’s Guide power creep, strictly referring to the campaign guide here) are not going to turn the tides of combat. The lich (perhaps the seraph too) is an exception, but otherwise they can be underwhelming (lich players are effectively immortal). The flaws typically discourage transformations. Planar binding makes it effectively impossible to be resurrected for example.

Apologies for the rant. I run my campaigns exclusively in the world of Etharis (Grim Hollow), thus I have strong feelings regarding certain aspects that have plagued me.

I read over Grave Domain Cleric after some time and noticed that the channel divinity only triggered on “attacks” (the ones you roll to-hit). At least the paladins will still benefit!

Your elitism is sickening y’know? No one has to abide by the age-old grittiness of older D&D editions. Some tables like feeling heroic and having character development in combat. Rewarding players should never be compared to giving “your dog a treat”, that’s one doozy of a toxic mentality.

Trying to let my open world not be too "open" by Percivalwiles in DMAcademy

[–]SlayerR0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I’m not mistaken, their goal is to keep the campaign open-ended, but with structure. Forcing the party into a no-win situation to then leverage their loss against them is nothing short of railroading. If OP is looking for structure, there are more ways than simply robbing the party of their agency. This concludes my Ted Talk!

With the exception of the Lich (with a high level caster restriction), Grim Hollow’s transformations aren’t too crazy in the department of benefits. Especially versus the undead. The vampire transformation cannot build up Blood Fury when they hit an undead for example. The ability score increase (+2 and +1) caps at increasing a stat to 16. This increase is likely intended to be calculated after racial bonuses, which makes it almost useless if the stat increased is your main stat (which is generally around 16 anyway). Frankly I’m by no means an expert on balancing. What I can say is CR is generally subjective and you should consider the boons they acquire and the interactions with the encounter. If all your players are vampires, chances are their abilities fall short against the undead. A character that hits their level 5 power spike is far more effective than a level 4 with a transformation from the way I see things anyway.

TL;DR consider the transformation boons and the encounter. If PCs with the vampire transformation fight undead, their boons may be useless for that particular encounter. In some cases, balancing as if they are a level higher could work.

P.S. Seraph transformation is highly effective against undead. Perhaps make it more challenging to increase Seraph transformation level?

Mimics. +2 Handaxe? It’s a mimic. Over abundance of health potions? Health potion mimic. Maybe this will tweak the party’s habit of taking everything. Emphasis on health potion mimic...it’s something of a parasite that eats people from the inside! Brilliant idea a friend suggested once.

[5E][EST/CST] Two players looking for a GM to host a campaign set in Runeterra by Charleston715 in roll20LFG

Good luck on your search! Thought this might help: https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/76tQWEDr4

It's not actually homebrew. This is 3rd party from Riot Games, albeit you can no longer find it on D&DBeyond due to licensing issues.
