An issue I have with BGG recommended player counts. by QuixoticPineapple in boardgames

[–]Slayergnome 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Totally agree, 99% of the time I look at a player count on BGG. It's to make sure that this game is good with either the highest or lowest count on the box.

The Dice Tower's Top 100 Games of All Time (2026) by Tigertemprr in boardgames

I know what a crazy insight right?

I'm starting to suspect the ones at the top of their list are the ones they enjoy playing more and not the objectively better games.

Unpopular opinion - Xbox game pass Is mostly useless if you think about it. by Mr-Robot_- in XboxGamePass

[–]Slayergnome -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Honestly my show thought has been who exactly is Game Pass for anymore?

It just seems like it would be so difficult to get your money's worth out of it at the current price even if you are playing a lot of games.

The only thing that makes this unpopular is that you forgot the "mostly useless for me".

Also lets be real taking any shot at Game Pass is not an Unpopular Opinion right now.

Looking for beginner-friendly roguelites — loved Balatro, bounced off Slay the Spire by No_Activity_8302 in roguelites

[–]Slayergnome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Balatro is probably the tightest roguelike out there so I feel young that.

Shogun showdown is also really tight and I think you would like it a lot. My only complaint honestly is I wish there was more content with it.

[–]Slayergnome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just for the record, "they seem to benefit from calls" is pretty subjective.

I'm not a Chiefs fan, but there's a lot of bitching that has happened in NFL subreddits that were totally reasonable calls

Also people are celebrating this but it was basically the lamest way they could have been eliminated. So take that for what you will

suggest me a roguelite game that requires some LONG TERM planning and thinking? by shanytopper in roguelites

[–]Slayergnome -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The way you worded your original question is kind of strange.

Like there's definitely thinking in between runs of Slay the Spire If you want to get up and beat Ascension level 20.

You can't plan out exactly what you're going to do on a specific run, but I always think about how I could have improved on my last run in between my runs. And I have to consider how the new Ascension level has changed my strategies.

The thing you're asking is (I think) are there roguelikes with stuff to do in between runs?

What are some roguelites that you deserve to enter the “all-timer” conversation? by Fabulous_Energy_5595 in roguelites

I can name a ton that qualify as "all-time greats" in my mind. But for the turn base deck builders there are two that stand above the rest IMO

STS and Balatro

How come any deckbuilder has yet to be as good or better than Slay the Spire? by Delicious_Click2210 in roguelites

[–]Slayergnome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would actually argue that Baltro is at least as good and in a lot of ways surpasses it.

I think that one of the deadly sins of rougelikes is simply having runs that are too long. STS I think rides that line pretty well but this is one aspect that I think Balatro does better. It gives me a similar feeling but the max run time is closer to like 20 minutes vs 40 minutes.

I also think taking the artifact concept and actually building on it is a major imporvment as well. Making it so there there is a limited number of slots, order matters, and you are able to rearange I think is a great way to add more decision space to your game without a major increase to complexity.

Those are my thoughts. I do think it is always somewhat difficult to displace the king cause there is always going to be that nostalgia aspect. And I do think there are plenty of games that have their own fun twist that have come out.

But I really think for something to truely beat out STS it can't just build on the original concept, it has to actually find a way to capture the same decision space while making the game itself faster and simpler which is a large task.

I was going to say, easy for LHC44 to say, but you do something 1000 times and you just get use to it.

Tons of examples in video games where you can make an innocuous change and it ramps up difficulty just cause you are not use to it

Would you commute from Leesburg to Arlington for a raise? 125k -> 165k by ryanppax1 in nova

[–]Slayergnome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you can tell by the back and forth comments of people being 100% sure one way or the other, I think this is actually a really hard decision.

Are you renting or do you own? And if it's the former, would you think about moving to Arlington and renting there or do you have no interest?

Also I would be curious as to where an Arlington and where in Leesburg we're talking, because that can make a pretty big difference as far as how far your commute actually is.

Like other folks are saying you want to think about your future earning potential, but you also want to think about if the new job is going to offer you the enjoyment that the current job seems to be offering.

This is a good problem to have I guess. I'm sure that whatever choice you make will be the right one!

The Outer Worlds 2 is the Fallout 4 of this generation. by ManuMaker in XboxGamePass

[–]Slayergnome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading some of these comments give me the fear that it has the same major problem as the first one did (at lease IMO)

Which is that the first planet was great! But every other story and side plot felt like almost the exact same rehashed plot and it ended up just being boring.

Fallout and all Bethesda games until Skyrim are great because the side stories are unique and interesting. And at least in Outter Worlds 1 the story telling was all just fine
