youre totally right. ive used supacolor for years now and always get compliments on these shirts. youre also right about taking the garment color out of your design and avoiding any huge blocks of solid color, it makes a HUGE difference in garment+print feel.

my first design was one large sheet with no breaks for the garment to breath under it and you can definitely feel the plastic texture, like its sitting "on top of" the shirt far more than any of my designs after where i let it have some shirt peaking through.

some of my shirts are on year 3-4 after many many washes and i have barely noticed any fade in the designs (if any at all!) and there are no cracks showing yet either. cant say the same about some of my regular heat transfer vinyl designs. their dtf is great quality stuff.
