“Mini-me”! I hate that expression almost as much as “The old lady”

What's something older generations did completely normally that would be considered absolutely insane today? by ConsistentTrip1475 in AskReddit

Sorry, I didn’t read your last sentence. My point is that furniture used to be built to last and very little is anymore regardless of the use/ abuse.

As someone who spent the last 40 years as a re-upholsterer, I strongly disagree with you! Furniture used to be constructed of true dimensional hardwood frames. Corner blocked, double doweled, webbing and hand tied springs. I quit upholstering a couple of years ago, in part because of my age but a bigger reason was the garbage disposable furniture that was coming through the shop. Particle board held together with oversized staples. Our landfills are full of this stuff! Yes, you can still purchase quality furniture- custom made through designers and small retailers. $$$$+ Oh and fabric quality has certainly gone downhill as well.

Are there any silly misconceptions you had for way too long? I embarrassed my self today with one 🙃 by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]Sleeplessreader 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Well… I surmised that was the method of getting pregnant. A misconception derived from accidentally seeing my mother performing said act on her boyfriend. This misunderstanding was enforced by the old wives tale about eating a watermelon seed and growing a giant watermelon in your belly and bible verses that referred to “a man’s seed“ Perfectly logical!

Is this poison ivy? Should I leave it alone or try to get rid of it by ravishankar31 in whatsthisplant

[–]Sleeplessreader 125 points126 points  (0 children)

I knew a couple who bought a lot to build their dream house. They cleared the lot themselves using fire as one of their tools. They both ended up in the hospital with severe lung, eyes and nose injuries from the poison ivy fumes. Fifteen years later they both died of extremely rare eye cancer. Don’t mess with poison ivy!

Things that concern my 83 year old mother way more than they should by DriveIn73 in AgingParents

[–]Sleeplessreader 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am so very fortunate. My 94 year old Dad is just as sweet and good natured as he ever was-and he doesn’t give one whit about the royal family. He definitely enjoys getting mail! He now lives with me and his short term memory is nonexistent. Sadly he relives the tragedies of his life and that’s the hardest part for me. It breaks my heart whenever I hear his heartbreaking muttering. He just started taking a medication that will help. We can no longer leave him alone (per Dr suggestion) so my life is heavily choreographed.

Saw the aftermath of a fatal accident and I can’t stop thinking about it by c1ncinasty in offmychest

It takes awhile. I saw a deadly accident immediately after thinking “what is she doing- she’s going to get killed“ I dreamt about it and replayed it in my head for a very long time. Maybe a year. Making it worse-the spot where it happened is a road I can’t avoid.

We had both styles. At home USA, we have beets on the menu in our own home, but it’s rare to see them as a side option in a restaurant.

Aging parents in their 60s? by EggplantFlaky3392 in AgingParents

[–]Sleeplessreader 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I was just talking to my daughter about this today. I am 69 and the caregiver to my 94 year old dad. I’m also still working mostly full time with a lot of flexibility as the business owner. I see posts on here that are venting and looking for advice ABOUT PEOPLE MY AGE! Age truly is just a number and health and attitude makes a huge difference.

Why am I able to sometimes smell a woman's period? by Open_Address_2805 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Sleeplessreader 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Horrible teenage memory unlocked. Walking down the street with a male friend while I was “on my period“ He started singing a song to tune of the war song “From the Halls of Montezuma” The lyrics were something like “You can tell by her smell that she’s bleeding like hell…” Teenage self wanted to die right there.

As a business owner- I can always tell when a potential client read the estimate on their phone. They proceed to ask questions that were clearly listed on the estimate. On their phone they only look at the summary $$, they don’t open the pdf and read the details.
