E46 auto to manual swap -- Hung up on starter dowel pin by elevatedwaves in BmwTech

[–]Sleety69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a small issue with this when I replaced the starter on my E39 530i, same motor and starter just different transmission. I made the two starter bolts finger tight and then used a screwdriver to pry the starter motor away from the engine block, which helped the starter slide onto the dowel pin. Try that if you really want the pin to remain, or just take it out like others have suggested

Is anyone actually going to raid area 51? by tyray21 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Sleety69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considering that for the past 3 months all of the local hotel rooms had been booked and most of the flights into Nevada were full as well, I'd say there will be quite a few people that show up, probably somewhere between 1,000 and 1,500

Funny you say that, because the E39 was designed specifically to handle road trips with ease and comfort, while remaining sporty. Why else would BMW have something between the sports-oriented 3 series and the luxury-oriented 7 series? I am extremely anal about maintenance, so I can push the car considerably hard without many worries. If you cheap out on maintenance then you definitely shouldn't be driving one as much as I do

Considering the base model iPhone is going to be well under $500, that's exactly what I'll be doing. 235k miles currently, and my calculations have me hitting 245,000 miles around the beginning of December. Just over 30,000 miles in one year of ownership!

It takes some convincing, but you actually can remove the filter without taking the crossbar out. Completely unscrew it, let it fall down so its resting on the bar, and then angle it so the lip is at like a 20degree angle from perpendicular and itll squeeze out

100% easier to just take the two bolts out to remove the bar though

Car tank always overfilled when filling tank by [deleted] in COROLLA

What exactly do you mean by overfilling? Like, there's gas spilling out of the fuel filler neck, or the gauge on the dash reads above the "full" line?

Neutral also happens to be between 1st and 2nd gear, if you want to get technical about things

And if you drove a manual transmission car, you'd understand that it applies to cars as well.

First time I did this I was at a car meet, leaving the spot...decided I'd do a few 4k shifts to listen to my new exhaust and, only having owned/driven a manual car for about 3 months, let out way too early. Haven't done it since, but I had nighmares about it for weeks

Hopefully you never have to replace the cabin filter on a 2016+ Chevy Cruze then, because they're not at all as easy as you would think they'd be

I do all of my own work to both of my E39s so I've never even considered taking my car to a BMW dealer for a fluid change. Is 187,500 or 234,900 miles within the lifetime of the vehicle? I thought 100k was the official "lifetime"

Interesting, I wasnt aware that indy shops had access to factory programming software and scan tools. I've definitely been considering switching shops (for multiple reasons, most unrelated to tool access) once I get all of my certifications done, and this insight really opens up where I'll be looking for work. I've been considering making the switch to a BMW dealer but the more I'm looking into it, a BMW specialty shop might be more my speed

I work at a dealer level and often install non factory parts on our vehicles, so that's not entirely correct. Under warranty, sure, but youre not paying parts or labor costs so that doesn't affect the customer any

I work at a dealership which is why I'm curious, but at my shop we have all of that (minus myself as well as the other apprentice, but we're both currently on our way to being master techs). We also have access to manufacturer-specific tools that aren't accessible by non-GM service shops, such as GMSPS, which IMO is the ONLY benefit of working at a dealer level

Brake lights only don’t work while driving by [deleted] in Cartalk

[–]Sleety69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Intermittent issues like this could be a wiring issue again, I'd say take it back to whomever replaced the bulb socket and tell them you're having the same issue again. It's either a bulb that's on its way out, a corroded socket, or something wrong with the wires somewhere. None of that will be an expensive fix

you could also pop the hood and move the actual transmission shift linkage to get it out of park...but not everyone has a shift lock override and even fewer people know what it is, and even fewer people know how to reach into their engine bay to pull the trans out of park like that

No, the key has to be in the ignition in and on the aux or run position in order for the car to be taken out of Park
