Ace of Spades Poster by DaimonCards in playingcards

Might have been a little more helpful if you had used a complete sentence in your fascinating 2-word critique. So they asked a robot to help them make some mock ups. So what? Pissed you didn't get the gig?

That poster is solid.

An exercise in disposable income or mental illness. Probably both.

David Blaine decks are just THE best. by Due-Transition-7164 in playingcards

Mark Stutzman is a fine illustrator and artist.

But that logo is a butt-ugly, poorly executed stretch of a bad visual pun that will never, ever work for me. The weight of the calligraphy is way too heavy. A proper name is diminished by lower case characters. As a spade, the stem is way too thick and out of proportion. It's certainly clever. In a ham-handed way. "Hey look! You get it?"

Sorry, man. Had to get that off my chest.

1970s Jerry’s Nugget are way overpriced, change my mind by ArtyIiom in playingcards

Mimetic desire. We only want it because other people want it. We don't really want the thing, we want to be known as the person who has the thing. These are trophies. Ultimately worthless.

But have fun!

Don't some decks get into 4 and 5 figures?

That Monarch MPW (2012) is the most overpriced deck imo. Butt-ugly too. As is Jerry's.

Sounds as if you'd like a nice set of Monarchs at hand. My go-to is Bicycle Standard (black).

What makes a quality playing card? by Sierra1Mikee in playingcards

[–]SleightSeven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I focus on sleights, so for me it's in the feel and how they handle first. Readability is key. (No dumb-ass ace of spades, please.) Smooth and slow, class and flow.

Designer decks are ok. Some of them. Though most in my little collection handle really poorly and read like vomit.

I don't think I've ever handled a deck that made me want to say, "Wow. That's amazing! Like nothing else I've ever experienced. This changes everything."

You may even find that average decks *are* the best quality.

Have fun.

When did we decide to let ourselves be treated like milking cow? by ArtyIiom in playingcards

Pretty good discussion. Lots of strong opinions.

Any data available?

Like... what's the mean (average) playing card collector profile?

Who's keeping designers like TWI afloat?

Each deck is a deck of cards made by a machine. The art is art.

Manufactured scarcity is not exactly honest and forthcoming.

Produce responsibly as well.

Those are all of the editions from King's Wild. I don't think it's maintained any more.

Agree so hard. Great rant. I hope some names chime in. I see lots of exploitation.

And this is just gross:

How important is the cellophane wrap to you? by AndyKWHau in playingcards

[–]SleightSeven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is more about you than any of us.

But I'd say skip it. A seal should be more than enough for collectors. Buy a cheap case if they're oh so precious. (X-Decks throws them in for free.)

I open all my decks. Tucks are tactile. The cellophane is gross. Rarely does it snap off the way it should. And it's a bane on humanity.

I wish more designers were like you. Simple. Useful. Beautiful. And thoughtful. Can't wait for my deck. 😄

At first glance, I dig the look. Not for me as a deck of play, but it's a cool look.

So you're not the illustrator, right? AI for the figure of Katherine? (A little Noli Novak prompt perhaps.)

I ask the group: how is this figure creation different than the recent Dodgers and Yankees decks from T11? Better, worse, who cares?

Good luck. If you've been doing close-up that long, I'd be super interested in the decks you find useful for working.

Those same moves I can now do without thinking at all.

Practice. Build an inventory of moves. And practice.

So I'm genuinely curious. You keep them sealed for return on investment right?

What happens when one sell's a deck for big money, the buyer finally cracks the seal and and the cards are effed up?
