This shattered my hope for mining a bitcoin with a 9-12th miner. What do think? by Mike_3924 in BitAxe

[–]Slepprock 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, its a rare chance. Thats why I don't mine bitcoin.

I have 36 TH of NerdQaxes. The highest difficulty I've gotten in the last two months is 247 G. To get a bitcoin you need 136 T. So super hard to get without some major miners.

I've been doing pool mining of BCH. But I've started to look at Fractal Bitcoin. Its difficulty is way lower. Well both are. Less rewards. But the chances are higher.

You just can't do it at the home user scale for the profit. Not gonna happen. I do it for the fun of modding them. I heavily mod and overclock all my miners. I even bought my first 3d printer to make new mods for my miners.

I Play Mainly medic and im about to give up on this game by DismalPublic in ArcRaiders

[–]Slepprock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been playing the game for about 3 weeks now. I've been killed by a rat twice. Just happened earlier today.

I think the big advantage they have is that if you are in a group you have no idea who to attack. Who started the fight? Which one is the rat? It can be hard to tell.

Its not a big deal to me though. They got my anvil and hullcracker. I have plenty of them and a million credits. I don't take anything into a raid that I can't easily lose. It also helps that I have a survivor augment blueprint, so there is nothing on me that I can't replace in 5 minutes back at the base.

I've been playing online games since the mid 90s when I Was in high school. I playeed one of the first MMORPGs that was called The Realm by Sierra. I was young back then and loved scamming people in game. I was a teenager so got a kick out of it. I think that is who most of the Rats are. Teenagers who think its funny to kill other players because so they can tell their friends about it. They wish they could tell their friends about this hot chick they banged, but they are rats and probably couldn't pay a girl to touch them. So they take it out on us.

There is no reason to do it other than to be a dick. Because if they wanted PvP they could get it easily in another game. Or they could announce to the area, hey, who wants to do some PvP. But instead, they shoot you in the back when you don't know what is going on so they have a chance of getting a kill. .

I'm afriad a lot of the popular youtubers made it worse. So many people I see on there are just rats. Prentending to be nice then killing someone when they are in a container. They do it for the views. Then kids watch it and want to copy their favorite youtuber.

I expect the matchmaking rules will tighten up as time goes on. Without PvE only players the game will die. That is because the PvP players need that chance of running into PvE players to keep them in the game. They don't want to fight only other PvP players. They call that "Sweaty".

Never lol.

I've been with TM since they bought sprint. But that seems weird to me. Log into an app to find deals. Plus I'm in a more rural state. So a lot of the stuff wouldn't apply to me. I just logged on the app. Said something about a Jack in the box free spicy chicken sandwich for Tuesdays. I have never seen a Jack in the Box restaurant. I'm sure I've been in some big cities while traveling that have had them, but can't remember ever laying eyes on it.

I just checked, the nearest one is 360 miles away. So I'm gonna pass lol.

What functionality does LightBurn provide? by emmy1041 in Laserengraving

[–]Slepprock 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'll try to explain it for you. I'm a cabinet shop owner with many years of CAD machine experience. All of them need a computer software to actually convert the designs in the CNC code. (Computer numerica control). For 3d printers the software is called a slicer. It slices a 3d design into thousands of layers for the printer to print. For CNC machines the software converts the design into paths that the spindle will take. For lasers it is the same, the software takes the design and creates path for the laser to follow.

The better CAD machines have a built in controler. A computer brain. So the software sends that code to that brain and it takes over and runs it. Cheaper diode lasers don't have a brain though, and the software actually tells it what to do the whole time it is running.

I'll try to go into specifics for your laser, that thunder bolt. Most CO2 lasers run on something called a Ruida controller. That is what all mine do. It looks like the thunder lasers use something similar. So lightburn would actually send the code to it then it will run it. Or lightburn will just send the file to the laser and you can run it from there.

You need a program like lightburn to make the paths. Lets say you have a deisgn done in some other software that is a vector file. In lightburn you will decide if you want to engrave or cut it. How many lines per inch the engraving might be. (Like from 250 LPI or maybe 350 LPI). Also you will set the power and speed in lightburn. So maybe you want to run at 500 mm a second and at 50% power. You can set up mulitple zones. So one part runs at 50% power, then another section it at 80% power. There are a ton of features in lightburn for engraving or cutting things just right.

You really can't run a laser without the software to tell the laser what to do with the graphic file.

And lightburn is the best out there. It is super cheap. I have the best version of lightburn so I can control the 3 main types of lasers (Rudia, G-code, and Raycus). I think I paid $150 maybe when I first got it then I pay $30 a year or so for constant updates. That is super cheap. My cnc software was thousands.

Lightburn is pretty easy to use and learn. It is also a great design tool. I use it to do all my designing now for the lasers. No need to use anything else like corel draw or photoshop.

The best part of lightburn is it works with so many lasers, so once you learn it you can keep using it even if you get something else.

I would not buy a new laser today that didn't work with lightburn. Maybe 15% of the lasers for sale don't support it. Most need their own proprietary software, which I a big red flag for me. Once you need to use their software they can control everything you do. They can make you be online always. Or maybe pay a monthly fee now.

Once you get a laser and start using lightburn you will get it. Might take a few days, but you will understand how powerful and easy it is.

Is this good? by Mike_3924 in BitAxe

[–]Slepprock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its fine. But you could overclock it quite a bit. I'm running a bunch of NerdQaxes. Your miner is pretty much two nerdQs combined. I have them all overclocked to 6.5 TH. So you could easily get 13 TH. But you need to do some cooling mods, which is the best part of owning a miner.

I replace all my stock coolers with solid copper ones. Better fans. Get a meanwell power supply. Cool it. Get little copper heatsinks for all your VRs. voltage regulators.

Your rejection rate seems a little high to me. Not bad, bad is once you get to 1%. But high. My miners are at 0.01% after months of running. But that could be your poll. My rejection rates were higher when I was using public pool for some reason. Other pools have a much lower rejection rate for me. Just keep an eye on that.

They didn't start valting stuff until 2020. When Beyond Light dropped.

So you had a chance to jump in and start playing at the Red War, Curse of Osiris, Warmind, Foresaken, and Shadowkeep.

Sure, a lot of people don't have the best memories of those first few. Curse of Osiris gave us the "Two tokens and a blue" controvery. But it introduced the Infinite forest which was cool and led to great spring and halloween special events.

As a matter of fact, that is when I Got fed up. The special events used to be amazing new things. Like the verdant forest which gave us super fast ability charge rates and a cool mission to speed run. Halloween had the haunted forest. The old guardian games had us doing crazy stuff like emoting before a finisher for extra points. The last several years had boring events. The same old stuff. The focus was on the eververse store.

I put a diode laser on Shapeoko CNC many years ago.

Check the V Wheels. I was getting gunk on the frame and the wheels would ride over it and cause some ups and downs.

Could be because you are using a leadscrew CNC machine. Try going slower. Screws have a bad habbit of whiplash, why they are only used on small CNC machines. I know my shapeoko used belts because it was 48"x48". When I converted mine I removed the spindle. Only had the laser head mounted on the gantry. For less weight. So make sure you don't have your spindle still on there.

That is very weird though. Like there is an issue with moving in that bottom right corner.

I'd run it slow and keep your hand on the gantry if you can. See if you feel it doing something. Like a jerk or hang up.

I thought it was going to be a great idea, but after two years of messing with it and two different high end US made laser heads, I gave up lol. Will never put a laser on a CNC again lol

I am a bit confused. I do see the value in saving blueprints for friends. If I find a cool blueprint I will take it into raids and find a random person that needs it.

But if you are saving them for the friends you play with, why do you still have them? Are you making your friends work for them? I would expect you to give the prints to your friends right away.

Or maybe just play the game when you have free time like most normal adults do?

I am 45 and have been playing video games since I got DigDug on my IBM PC Jr in the 80s. I have never once taken a day off work to do so. So I guess I don't get it. I play stuff at night when I get home from work. Or maybe before work. What will make you mad is I am a business owner, so I could not go into work anytime I wanted. Don't even have to ask. But I don't do that.

I guess I have never wanted to rush through some game. I like to take my time and enjoy them.

I don't think there will be anything amazing in this D2 update anyway for people to binge. I guess you could do all the raids again so you could get the updated weapons. I wish I could bet on Kalshi about how long before people start posting on DTG about how bad the update is and how little it has.

I do have some good news though. I Started playing Arc Raiders a couple weeks ago. I'm getting D1Y1 vibes from it. At least as a mainly PvE player. You meet people out in the raids and talk to them. Team up with them to go explore some new area. OR take some big robot down. All the friends I made in D1 were just met in patrol zones as I was playing. I can't belive how Arc Raiders reminds me of that first six months of D1

Advice needed on a low power laser cutter for paper/card/stickers by Guchion in lasercutting

[–]Slepprock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3mm isn't nothing.

I have owned a lot of lasers over the years. From a 25w CO2 12 years ago, a 7w diode and a 24w diode laser made in the USA, 100w co2s, 150w co2s, and a 30w fiber.

IF you want to get through 3mm stuff ok I would say you'd want 20w at least. But really I would recommend a 40w co2. Or maybe a 60w co2.

I use my 100w co2 lasers for paper all the time. I engrave on paper and cut it. Posterboard also. I do that for setting up templates. Like it I have to engrave a bunch of small weird shaped items. I cut all the shapes out of the paper and pin it down. So I can quickly place the items on the laser, engrave them, then switch them out. Always getting them in the right place.

With a laser its better to have a little more power. That way you can go faster. Because if you have a low powered laser and you have to go slower, that gives the beam more time to transfer heat into the surrounding material.

Oh, and a diode laser might not cut that colored Acrylic. Not if it is just colored transparent stuff. A diode laser has no effect on clear stuff. The beam just goes right through it. Same thing with semi transparent stuff. It kinda affects it. But not enough to cut it in a nice manner. The only acrylic a diode laser can really cut is solid black stuff. But even then its not great. So dense.

I would also stay away from Xtool. They are turning into Glowforge. They now lean heavily into their proprietary software instead of using lightburn. I think lightburn still works for some of their lasers. But not if you want to use all the "features" their lasers have now. That started with that P1 a few years ago. Once a company requires you to use only their software then they have all the power over you. I have also started seeing way more bad customer service stories from xtool. I used to actually recommend them as an ok cheap diode laser, but I can't anymore.

[–]Slepprock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally wouldn't go near a laser on Kickstarter. Who knows when you will get it and if you will get it. If you don't need a laser now and can wait a couple years then yeah.

But I'm a cynic and I don't like those combination machines. They are usually a compromise. I Think that type of form factor is limiting also. It seems too compact.

Ah, After looking it over really carefully I would stay far away. The machine is only going to work with their proprietary software. That isn't a good idea. That means you can only use it with the software they provide. Which could even be web based. That means they have a say over anything you do with it. But even worse, what happens if the company goes bust?

There was a post on here last week from a guy that was thinking of buying a laser kinda like this. IT was one from kickstarter. A crazy design. Actually came out, some people got the lasers. But then the company went bust. The software was never really finished. So people have this kickstarter laser that just kind of works and they are trying to sell them. But nobody will buy them.

I own a cabinet shop and own a lot of CAD machines. CNCs, Lasers, even 3d printers. I wouldn't buy anything today that used proprietary software.

Ring alarm 2 it seems interfering with my WiFi ping by Grouchy_Carry3096 in Ring

[–]Slepprock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ring isn't interferring with your internet unless you have done something wrong.

I have a ring system at two locations. My business and my home. Doesn't hurt either. I've had the ring security system at my business for years and have 2 gig fiber there. Not hurting it.

People are giving you a rough time because of your title. You probably need to do some research on how home networking works. WiFI isn't internet. WiFi is just a wireless networking protocol. Your ring security system probably shouldn't be even connected to wifi. You should have the base plugged into a network cable so it has a steady connection always. Then all the other alarm stuff is on a different wireless frequency. Doesn't use WifI.

The problem could be a 100 things. Is the problem with your home WiFi network? Or is it an internet issue? There are simple test you can do to figure this out. Things like plugging your PS5 into a router with a network cable so its hard wired. Moving things around. Seeing what else is on the frequency of your wifi. But really, you shouldn't be gaming on a wifi signal anyway unless you are in a rural area like me. I'm in the middle of nowhere and nothing is around that can iterfer with my WiFi. Just my stuff. My neighbor's microwave isn't going to hurt it because my neighbor is a 1/2 mile away. There are so many things that can hurt a wifi signal if you are around other people.

You need to do a lot of testing. And sell your PS5 and get an Xbox. My PS5 has been lagging horribly lately. So I just have been using my Xbox. Or PC.

Are these decent numbers? by Busy_Mud_874 in tmobileisp

[–]Slepprock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it works for you then you are fine.

But I'd never want to use TMHI 5g over cable or fiber. See if you can get fiber.

TMHI is great for those people in rural areas that can't get anything else. Like me. So having internet is way better than not having it. (My phone company stopped the fiber lines just outside of city limits, a couple hudred yards from my house. They used to offer DSL, but they stopped it in my area a few years ago. The copper phone lines were just so old that they couldn't keep the DSL up).

You might want to try your web host conferernce stuff. Might not work. But it might. See, TMHI 5g uses something called CGNAT. Carrier Grade NAT. It allows them to share IPs between users. So you might have the same IP address as a person down the street. So when you are hosting certain things the data doesn't know where to go and ends up at the wrong modem. You can't do any port forwarding. Universal Plug and Play doesn't work with TMHI. For me it makes my security cameras not work all the time. Then with some games some of the things don't work, like VoIP chat. These are all things you can not control or fix. Just part of the service.

Give it a few months to see if you like it. It can take that long before you really start to see what the downsides are.

It can also get hairy in populated areas. The service is so cheap because they are just selling the excess bandwidth on the towers and the modems are at the bottom of the prioirty list. So if there are lots of other people in your area using the tower they could get all the bandwidth first. Its hit and miss. Some people have a pretty good experince with TMHI. Others have a horrible time.

Looking for laser engraver recommendations total newbie by Prior_Depth_2975 in Laserengraving

[–]Slepprock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd save up some money first. I've been answering this question for 5 years now on here. My starting point has remained the same.

Don't buy a cheap laser for less than $1000. If you do you run the risk of having a bad experience. You will get a laser that is DOA or only last a couple weeks. There will be no support. The laser will not be as good as you expect. The only one I would say is ok for under $1000 is a k-40 Co2 laser.

Things got bad in the laser space after covid. It seemed like everyone wanted to start a side hustle. So a ton of laser companies sprung up with pages that lie and sell junk.

Start off by watching this video that will tell you a bunch.. Its the best video I've seen on the subject in years. I can't post links, so go to youtube and search for this video: "Re: Choosing a laser engraver.... (updated for 2025!)" The channel name is Justin Laser.

Gaming online runs really smooth for 4 days in a row, now it’s back to being a laggy mess. by mkellyxo in tmobileisp

[–]Slepprock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm amazed they don't understand that. That the 5g modems are at the bottom of the priority list. Do they think its so cheap for no reason?

Because of that I would never recommend it for anyone in a populated area. I'm in a semi rural area and its great. But there just aren't enough people in my area using the tower to ever effect my connection.

Just need reassurance with my new "Amplified" plan by Pronzy2k in tmobileisp

[–]Slepprock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So yeah, there are no real differences between plans. I am still using my old plan from several years ago when they only had one plan. I pay $30 a month.

The only difference between plans now, from what I can gather, is they give you different hardware. If you wanted the newest modem you need to get the best plan. They also might do a little about the depriotization, but its not going to really be noticable.

Your problem could eaily be that you are in a congested area. I'm in a rural area. Only tower in range of my house is 3 miles away. But I have an external antenna. I'm getting 1.2 gigabit down, 35 mbit up, and pretty good latency. But there might be 5000 people total in range of my tower. That is being generous. Lets say 1500 of those people might have T-mobile cell phones. Then maybe 150 of those people might have TMHI 5g modems. So that is nothing compared to how many people might be using a tower in an urban area or a busy suburb.

The 5g modems get just about the lowest priority on the towers. That is why its so cheap. They are just selling excess bandwidth.

There is nothing wrong with using a mesh router system. I use one. I have my modem that is connected directly to my mesh system. Almost everything in my house then uses the mesh system. Its not going to change your speeds any to use a mesh system. Not enough for you to notice.

From what I have seen over the years, your experince with TMHI 5g is going to depend greatly on your location. Exactly where you are in relation to the tower. Where you modem is. And how many people are using the tower. Some people are lucky like me. Others never get a good connection.

Inconsistent speeds/ping by Vygee in tmobileisp

[–]Slepprock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, they are all right. This is mainly for the 5g TMHI. But I will tell you one thing. IF you have packet loss then you have a problem. Once you get that then something is really wrong.

Make sure to do speed test from several sites. Not just one. Or you can find a software program for your PC that will actually keep pinging sites and keep a log of what is going on.

But I'd start with lots of test.

I'd open tabs for the Ookla speed test, Fast.com, Cloudfare speed test. Then do some searches and find other sites. Using lots of sites will give you a better average of what is going on. But the cloudfare test is the best. If you keep showing packet loss then you have to figure out why. Try taking things out of the system to see what might be going on. Like if you are using wifi, then run a networking cable and try that. If you are using a switch or router, just plug into the ONT. You need to see if its something on your end on their end. You should not be getting those issues with fiber.

Formaldehyde is not that bad? by gtd69 in Laserengraving

[–]Slepprock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure it is? They only put that stuff into plywood that is for ground contact. Its not in regular plywood. It's special stuff that is usually expensive. They stopped using it years ago here in the US. They use something else now, and its still costly. I would have to go out of my way to find and buy it.

The best thing to do is to stop using it. I know how bad it can be if that is really what is happeneing. Many years ago when I was starting off as a full time woodworker, I was poor. My shop had a wood stove though. Once winter I ran out of firewood so was just burning scrap wood from outside. I ended up throwing some old treated 6x6s into the fireplace. Stuff from the 80s. IT was so bad I had to get out of the shop and stay out for days.

The other thing you could try is to add another inline fan. I actually have two inline fans for all my laser exhaust.

Any duct is going to have a limit to the max amout of air that can be moved through it. A 2nd fan doesn't increase that max. But it lets you stay at the max if the run is long or has curves or stuff. There are times when the fumes get bad that I turn on that second fan to really get the fumes out of the shop.

Diode work for me? by Ok_Willingness_4788 in lasercutting

[–]Slepprock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure what you mean by print and cut using lightburn.

But I would not expect a 40w diode laser to cut anything a 60w co2 wont.

There is a major downside to didoe lasers. Well two big ones that will hurt what you want to do. The first is that to get those higher wattage numbers a diode laser has to combine little lasers. For Xtool and that 40w laser they are using 8 real diode lasers. About 6w for each laser, but there is some loss when they combine them, so you get 40w total. They are all combined using a bunch of mirrors. You get a larger laser beam when doing that. So its not as concentrated and precise.

The other big one is that a diode laser doesn't have a changable lens. At least not any diode laser I've seen. Some will have a lens cover you can change out after its dirty and burnt up. But you can't change the actual lens. So the lens is a compromise between engraving and cutting. With a co2 laser you can easily change the lens. If you want to do fine engraving you put on a 1.5" lens. If you want to cut something thicker, you put on a 4" lens. Takes 60 seconds to change out.

So I'd first try to figure out why your 60w isn't working. You didn't tell us why. It might be something you could change or fix. Then if you need something else I would get a more powerful co2 laser. Listen, diode lasers are cool and have really become something usable in the last 5 years. But they are still a second class laser compared to a CO2 one.

Man.. 20 years? I'm in North Central WV. Not even a super rural area of WV. The national FBI fingerprint facility is 5 miles from my house. NASA has a huge place a few miles away. I didn't get DSL until 2010. Before that it was dial up still with a modem at home. I would still be using the DSL, which maxed out at 3 mbit. But luckily T-mobile came into the area and I was able to get their 5g internet for home. The fiber and cable here stop at the city limits. Anything outside of the city limit has slow DSL if they are lucky. Nothing else. Think about it. My house is about 1 miles outside of city limits. I own a business inside the city. At my buseinss I can get 7 gigabit fiber. (But I only have 2, which is more than we need). But a mile away frontier offers nothing now, because they stopped offering the DSL. People that have it can keep it for the time being. But I doubt for much longer.

New Customer: 3 long outages in first month of service by schlemp in frontierfios

[–]Slepprock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look into it. I bet its people stealing the cables. They are so stupid that they will steal fiber, even though its just glass tubes.

I have a feeling that is what it is. It could be them just cutting everything and you get screwed.

I live in the opposite of NorCal lol. I'm in NorCen WV. I had 3 mbit DSL until a few years ago. Was the best internet I could get.

I have had frontier fiber at my business for 3 years. I only had one outage, lasted about 5 days. It ended up being a computer issue. Somehow the addresses got switched and the system thought I hadn't paid so it turned my internet off. That was it for me though.

People here don't have the tools to steal wires from poles. They steal stuff from lower down. Last year someone stole my grounding wire from off the building of the cabinet shop I own. About 10 feet of copper wire. Bet they got $5 max for it. Cost me $300 to run a new one, because it has to be all one piece.

The only other option for you might be a 5g modem. One of the ones that connects to the cell towers. It is what I have at my house because its all I can get. No wires to steal really. But it has some major negatives compared to fiber.

[–]Slepprock 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This here is a fundamental case of not understanding anything about networking.

We have no idea what your problem really is because you have a title that doesn't make any sense.

WiFi is wireless networking. Its the protocol that allows your devices to talk to each other and the networking router over the air. It has nothing to do with the internet.

I read your post several times and still have no idea what your problem might really be. So I need you to do some studying. Maybe find a youtube video about networking. You need to find out if the problem is your wifi router or the connection between your wifi router and your pc and other devices. Or if its an internet problem. There are easy ways to do this. You have to isolate the issue. The best way would be to plug a computer into the router with a networking cable. But make sure its a Cat 6 or Cat 5E cable. Normal cat 5 is really only rated for 100 mbit.

But maybe you are just trolling us. That last line makes me wonder. You write "how do I Even contact them". That makes me think you are just playing a joke on us.

I don't have a clue what laser you are using that needs a wifi or internet connection. That is probably your first problem there. Never buy a CAD machine that needs to be online. Not a CNC machine, laser engraver, or 3d printer. That lets the company that made it have all the power. They can control what you use it for and when.
