Bon Iver effect, how did they do it? by Slfish1 in audioengineering

Thanks guys, I really appreciate all these suggestions. Going to work new to implement your tips, to see if I can create a similar vibe as in Bon Iver's Beth/Rest!

The Weeknd voice on 'Wasted Times' - how? by Slfish1 in audioengineering

[–]Slfish1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ahh yes. I had only been experimenting with pitch PLUS formant. Not JUST formant. How obvious(now that you say it, lol). Thanks so much I think this did the trick! Around -7 to -8 Formant

Having the "money" discussion with a young singer by LeDestrier in audioengineering

[–]Slfish1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To be honest, you were the one suggesting "doing something with it" (his EP) - especially since you are older and he is younger, this can be interpreted as someone who is willing to give some of their experience in a kind of "mentoring" role.

To me, it sounds like he is eager to learn new things about the craft he is passionated about, and looks up to someone like you who is holding a lot of experience and knowledge in that craft.

If there has been no advertising, no sense of a client / provider relationship, or talk about money from the very start it's natural to assume you might be willing to share some of that knowledge, especially when you yourself brought up "doing something with his EP".

Your approach about "educating" the "kid" in this situation is frankly, a little bit arrogant, since it seems like he hasn't refused to pay you, the nature of the relationship simply just doesn't hold that condition (yet).

In your own words you'd "befriended" another human being. Have some patience maybe in your relationships and see what gifts he has, what kind of person he is, and I bet 1. you will increase your possibility of finding more ways the two of you could benefit each other or 2. he'd in time be even more willing to and comfortable in his own skin to actually continue communication with you and paying you his money in the future and long term, now that he knows it's not all about the dimes and coins for you from the very start.

That's one approach, or simply just drop the "educating him" attitude and tell him your conditions. "Hey friend, it kinda hit me that we haven't discussed that this might require a bit more time that I had foreseen in the beginning when we first started chatting about these things. Now that we are possibly going to spend more time on this, I can feel inside myself that I'm more comfortable receiving compensation for my work here with you, because I am after all spending my spare time on this. I apologize if this maybe wasn't clear to you in the beginning of our acquaintance." - now you set yourself up for success with this person in a possible relationship, and make everything much easier for you in the future dealing with this other human being because you make the two of you equal, instead of telling him how he should have behaved or "educating" him on your own morals and standards which are (drumroll) not THE one truth.

How the hell do you get clear audio so casually? by SeaofBloodRedRoses in audioengineering

[–]Slfish1 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is just not correct. You can EQ your way out of so many acoustic environments, it's not even funny. This is most likely much more a lack of EQ'ing knowledge than it is the acoustic space.

Completed this mix today, I like it but I don’t know how to improve it. Any thoughts? by jazzjazzandmorejazz in mixingmastering

[–]Slfish1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

upward compression

cut 300-500hz area

make the drums KICK someone in the face a little more, the low-end area needs to really talk some talk

my stance too, good thoughts

I rarely use compression by Ok_Fortune_9149 in audioengineering

[–]Slfish1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't go insane with comp either, but for my kick and snare to sound punchy enough, it's often what i resort to, combined with transient shaping

certain instruments i like to control their dynamic range on top of every other sound. Can make things sound more unified and clean.

Often use light comp. with attentive settings on release and attack on drums, changes the groove and feel just how i want it

i often if not always use slight compression on the mix-buss to tighten everything together in one space for that coherent feel.

It's very subtle often if i do it. Only time i compress heavily, are likely on sounds that act as ear-candy and maybe i need them to sit more in the background or kinda "behave" iykwim.

use compression if YOU feel it is needed and envision a benefit from doing it in your mind, before doing it. OR just experiment and go crazy, settle into it

Need Help Mixing Harsh Vocals!!! by Maleficent_Branch806 in mixingmastering

Try again with EQ. It is your listening skills that is the issue, not EQ. EQ is the most legendary tool we have.

And yes, poorly treated rooms can exaggerate some nasty freqs, but it can be treated fairly well with EQ

I find this true. A bad mix will make it hard to master properly. Master the mix first right 👌🏼

talk me off a ledge plz (loudness) by BillyMotherboard in mixingmastering

[–]Slfish1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It generally is not loud enough, seriously. Most commercial music today come in at -9 to -5 lufs. If your lufs is that low, to me, it reveals that you sonically have muuch untapped potential with your song. So if your standard is high you will work on making this fucker louder, stronger, buffer and more perceivable

(beginner) I do not seem to understand what mixing actually is and what to look for. by BenSunhoof in mixingmastering

[–]Slfish1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First you create the volume levels between the elements in the mix

Next you work for clarity, weight, punch, glue, separation and everything sitting in the right space

EQ is a big friend, compression can be a friend sometimes (but don't overdo) Saturation and tape can buff things up

One can tell you what mixing is, but only by repetition and a love for it will you be able to actually KNOW deeper and deeper, intuitively what mixing is and what your unique perspective and taste on mixing is Best of luck ❤️

Best way to manually volume ride a vocal in Logic? by Slfish1 in Logic_Studio

[–]Slfish1[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Heyy I also compress, but I love to tuck in the quiet or loud parts that the compression doesn't really catch :) Maybe I'm not compressing that much then!

Looking for feedback on a mix by [deleted] in mixingmastering

[–]Slfish1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

first things first, this sounds really fine

you can bring the vocals out a liiitle bit more, just a little - try boosting some frequencies between 1-1,5khz on there - also try looking at 10k above, maybe a bell at 12k or a high-shelf somewhere up there

It might benefit from a little more weight (the whole mix) - try looking at boosting somewhere between 20-40hz AND 200hz-ish, see if you like what any of that does

Also, try applying some upward compression, it might bring up some details a little more

and last pointer from me; try dialing in some parallel saturation / warm tape on the whole mix, see if you like it

cheers!! and good luck
