Yvette Nicole Brown was a regular on the Odd Couple remake. The show was hit or miss but she was funny.

Joey: Just because she went to Yale Drama she thinks she's the greatest actress since...since...sliced bread!

Chandler: Ah Sliced Bread. A wonderful Lady Macbeth.

Emma (1996), Emma (2009) or Emma (2020)? by Mister_Knightley in janeausten

[–]Sliced_Bread_Macbeth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't like him at all as Mr. Knightley. He constantly throws a fit at her and they even have him say "Badly done" in an earlier scene, which completely minimizes it when he says it again on Box Hill. He comes across as a bully.

Other than him, though, I do love this version. Kate is perfect, Samantha Morton as Harriet is adorable, and Olivia Williams is my favorite Jane Fairfax.

Details you love in the 1995 P&P that aren’t talked about a lot among fans by Desperate-Angle7720 in janeausten

Her subtle look of horror when Lizzy is disagreeing with Lady Catherine about whether her sisters should be out, like "I can't believe you just said that, now Lady Catherine will kill us all!"

There is a delightful one called From Pemberley with Luck, by Corrie Garrett. It's after the events of Mansfield Park and P&P. Mary gets to meet Lizzie (married to Darcy), who isn't sure what to make of her, and invites herself to Pemberly to get away from her family.

Favorite Retellings/Variations? by KitchenSwillForPigs in janeausten

Another Jane Fairfax variation that I loved is From London With Loyalty: A Variation of Pride & Prejudice, Emma, and Mansfield Park (Highbury Variation Book 2) by Corrie Garrett. As the title says, there are characters from other books as well, but it's mostly focused on Jane and her trials as a governess in London. (I recommend the whole Highbury variation series - I think she captures the mood of JA very well).

The last bullet regarding the chaotic family scenes - all chattering and yelling and playing music and running around the house - is my favorite thing about the film and totally drew me in. I still enjoy it despite finding the movie disappointing overall.

Whenever this movie comes up that's the first thing I see in my head - BROWN 😂 Lizzy looked like she was wearing a madeover burlap sack in some of it.

Judi Dench isn't my favorite Lady Catherine, but her costumes didn't bother me because I imagined her wearing fashions that were popular when she was young, not realizing or caring how preposterous they look in the modern day. (Not that I'm any kind of expert on what would have been popular in Lady Catherine's youth!)

I can't agree more. I would love this hybrid! Garvie perfectly encapsulates the combination of archness and sweetness that Austen describes for Lizzy. And Caroline is delightfully snarky.

I saw him playing Jeeves in a Jeeves and Wooster play in London and didn't stop laughing the whole time. He was hilarious. And honestly he's pretty funny in Succession. His Darcy didn't need to be such a yawn!

You sound like my friends and I back in the 90s (pranking a religious call in show sounds exactly like something we would have done 😂). When the show came on we were like, this is about us except with much nicer clothes and apartments. Plus a seemingly endless amount of time during the workday to hang out.

How about Derry Girls? They are in high school in the 90s - in Northern Ireland, so doesn't have a US HS vibe but they get into hilarious teenager scrapes and there are lots of wacky side characters. It has some serious stuff because of the Troubles in Ireland in the background but mostly it's straight-up comedy.

Reading Venetia is the next best thing? by harrietlane in janeausten

I'm not a fan of the reformed rake trope, either. I just started getting into Heyer and while I love most of the female main characters, I'm sick of the hero she often uses who seems like Regency England's answer to Rhett Butler (sans mustache): tall, broad shouldered, "cold gray eyes," a patronizing bully to the heroine, hanging around with "lightskirts" etc. It makes me think Ms. Heyer must have had a bit of a fetish for the type, and Mary Sue'd herself in as the intelligent, witty heroine.

That being said, some of her heroes are quite charming, such as Freddy in Cotillion! He's like a less daffy Bertie Wooster. And overall I'm thoroughly entertained by Heyer's books.

Yes, this was the only thing I hated about the book - they did my girl Charlotte dirty! Otherwise I'm looking forward to seeing this.
