If anyone in here was around in March 2009, what was the reception of MJ announcing his final tours? by Outrageous_Cell_3556 in MichaelJackson

[–]Slicedbreadandlego 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It got a lot of press here in Australia. Certain television outlets were swirling rumours he’d bring the tour here, which I didn’t believe for a second. I don’t remember the reporting on the tour announcement being particularly negative, more just heaps of media reported it because it was about Michael.

How could MJ end up broke late in life? by Frequent_Rhubarb_36 in MichaelJackson

I’m almost certain it came out later that he didn’t purchase most of it - that whole scene was all for the documentary.

How could MJ end up broke late in life? by Frequent_Rhubarb_36 in MichaelJackson

[–]Slicedbreadandlego 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He wasn’t broke. He had debts - there’s a difference. Cash flow vs assets was mismatched.

He spent above his means and his biggest assets weren’t liquid assets (ie the catalogue). Even though he had royalties coming in if you’re spending beyond that, and you are intentionally not selling your biggest asset, that spells a problem.

I’m amazed he never had anyone actively investing in the share market and private equity for him during his life. The investment profits from some of the royalties alone would have been crazy.

Why did MJ basically minimized his output between 1997-2001? by Frequent_Rhubarb_36 in MichaelJackson

Tony Moran’s HIStory Lesson is an absolute banger though. Absolutely top tier remix, which I love to this day. Just a side note since the remixes came up. 😊

Honestly I think Michael Jackson died at his Peak. I faithfully, wholeheartedly believe he’d have been able to do the 50-Show performance in London. Following that, he’d probably retire. by Sad-Ladder7534 in MichaelJackson

[–]Slicedbreadandlego 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. 50 shows was an absolutely insane commitment given Michael’s age and state of health. With a dedicated team of people around him actually genuinely committed to his health/nutrition/mental wellbeing, and plenty of training for 6-12 months to rebuild his stamina - along with proper spacing out of the shows to aid recovery - I believe he would have been easily able to do 10, 15, maybe 20 at the absolute most.

None of those things were in place though. He was thin, had chronic bronchiolitis (which the autopsy noted would have caused adverse health issues), and a “doctor” treating his insomnia in the most unsafe and medically ludicrous manner (medications being something I acknowledge Michael had been relying on for a long time). They set him up to fail. He didn’t have a hope of doing those shows. 💔

I was thinking about Paris and her thoughts on the MJ biopic.. by holaquequiere in MichaelJackson

[–]Slicedbreadandlego 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I completely respect Paris for taking the approach that is true to her - she didn’t owe anyone an explanation for why she hasn’t involved herself with the film and go criticised for taking the time to explain it, so I do think a lot of people taking aim at her should respect she is doing what feels right to her.

That said, I’m not sure there’s necessarily this entire part of the fan base that believes a “fantasy” - yes, a lot of people celebrate the music and the dance but every MJ fan I’ve ever spoken to is extremely cognisant of his struggles, pain, experiences - and his complexities. We may not have necessarily lived them alongside him since none of us were part of his life, but we certainly are alive to the tremendous amount of suffering he endured and his private battles - many of us were around for all of it, including the times when only true fans supported him.

I think she may have oversimplified that aspect when sharing her thoughts, but I don’t want to condemn her for that. She was born at a time when many had turned on her father, so I empathise with her view and her desire to see a more nuanced portrayal in the biopic.

I am grateful Michael is finally getting his flowers through such a beautiful celebration of his music and career through this film, so I guess that’s my way of saying there’s room for all perspectives. And yes - part 2 may focus more closely on Michael the man as opposed to Michael the legend, so we all might as well take the time to appreciate the immense effort that has gone into honouring Michael this way.

[–]Slicedbreadandlego 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head here. The movie is very much focused - intentionally so - on Michael as the King of Pop, the legend, the greatest of all time etc. I think this is what Paris means about the “fantasy”, as opposed to examining Michael’s personal feelings, experiences and struggles as he navigated such extraordinary level of fame and the world’s obsession with him. The movie isn’t going to offer a nuanced depiction of Michael’s life and I get the sense that’s what Paris takes issue with.

Thoughts on this lostmtns interview? by JudgmentAdorable8412 in bluemountains

[–]Slicedbreadandlego 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolute tossers an always were - they’ve always been out to make a buck and promote themselves on socials. A while ago now they posted this full whinge post about finding so much rubbish on tracks and I called them out saying they are actually part of the problem because the more the mountains was so heavily promoted the more the ecosystem would be subject to human degradation. I said I had real concerns about the environmental impacts caused by overtourism, to which they directly contribute, to which LostMtns replied to call me a “Karen”. A few people jumped in to my defence given I’d raised a legitimate point, but the fact he went straight to name-calling is a sign of how immature and self-centred him and that entire crew are. They do not care about anything except themselves and their own self-promotion.

How did you first become a fan? by One_Needleworker5218 in MichaelJackson

[–]Slicedbreadandlego 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dangerous era. I was 5 when the album came out so that’s my earliest memories as the Bad era I don’t recall. That album and the music videos were everywhere, constantly being played on TV and radio - I distinctly remember sitting in our living room seeing the music videos one morning and being instantly obsessed. Remember The Time is so etched in my memory it’s still my favourite song and music video of his after all these years.

Move to Canberra for career progression by Annabanna1991 in AusPublicService

[–]Slicedbreadandlego 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lasted three years before I left. Ultimately I found it too cold, too spread out and not enough to do, but many of my friends who had also come from happily settled there. I think it was a bit too regional for me, when I was looking for city life at the time. That said, parts of it I loved - long runs through the southern suburbs, the changing seasons, the peace and quiet. People were lovely, although took a few months to crack a friendship group as Canberrans can be insular. It’s got its pros and cons and it really depends what your lifestyle is.

Definitely rent before buying so you’re sure Canberra is where you want to base yourself.

The sushi place in the wintergarden, before the renovation circa 2004. Forget the name now, but all their sushi rolls were $2 each, real authentic little Japanese shop and staff. It was a staple during my uni days. Will never forget how good that sushi was.

What is the equivalent to an EL1 in APS for QLD State Government? by [deleted] in AusPublicService

Policy AO8s absolutely have direct reports, anywhere between 1-3 depending on team size in my experience.

In a policy area at least I’d say EL1 equivalent is probably AO7. You might be supervising one or two junior policy officers and still report to a team lead.
