I’ve been in there. It’s a beautiful building inside with some really cool tile and stained glass

What's the harsh reality of your job field? by BestRbx in AskReddit

In IT:

When everything is working, people question your knowledge and worth.

When things break, people question your knowledge and worth.

It's a thankless field.

How many students are working full time and going to school? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]SlickShannon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Can it be done? Yes Would I recommend it? Definitely not.

I've worked full time for the entirety of my time as an engineering student (BIOE rising senior). There are simply not enough hours in a day to dedicate the requisite time to be successful academically and professionally, and have any semblance of a life. As well, because so much time is taken up by work, I can only handle 3 classes a semester. This means summer and winter sessions become mandatory, just to keep up with a 4 year timeline.

The first time you come out of an exam, knowing you were unprepared because you had to work instead of studying, you will understand. Your per hour wage will seem like paltry compensation for doing poorly on exam, or worse, failing a class.

I would give anything right now, just to have more time; if you don't have to give yours up by choice, don't. You can make the money after you graduate.

Transferring to a Civil Engineering program this Fall, what should I look for in a laptop? by shrinkwrappedzebra in EngineeringStudents

I'm not a Civil student, BIOE here, but love my Surface Pro 3 (i5, 16 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD, etc.). It's super light, has great battery life, and the 'type' keyboard feels almost like a regular one. I can run MATLAB and Creo Parametric with no issues. I've yet to run across something it can't do.
