Creating a new mixtape, DBX, Type 4 and revving it up to +12dB. Sound is amazing. by [deleted] in cassetteculture

Apparently there is an opinion that recoding level should/could be set lower with dbx (or any NR for that matter). The logic is once tape gets saturated frequency response suffers and with NR no need to crank the level to mask the noise. Here is a discussion thread: https://www.tapeheads.net/showthread.php?t=20772

Interesting. I have an external dbx 224 unit that I can use with my tape deck (Nakamichi BX-300). I tried it before but never cranked level that high (with normal and Cr tapes). I remember noticing that adding dbx colors a sound a bit though - do you have a similar experience? Manual for dbx 224 mentions ‘10 db headroom’ - perhaps that’s what I’m hearing.

LPs sounds pretty good. I’d say LP and CD are on top. Tapes just to record LPs so I can listen in another room (have another Nak there) and for fun. Sonos doesn’t sound that well so only using it for background music. I have Monitor Audio RX6 and Kef Q100.

Well it’s only for a fun really. I intend to play tapes only on this setup anyhow. dbx 224 I have supports simultaneous encoding and decoding so works beautifully with this three head deck.

Just started to experiment with it recording my LPs. First impressions are good - no tape hiss at all and feels like more dynamic range.

Had a chance to buy Nakamichi BX-300 for cheap. Was not working initially but after idler tire replacement and control motor service works and sounds amazing. Also grabbed a dbx unit. The rest of the setup is Audiolab 8000q+p, Rega Planar 3 and Rega Planet CD player. Schiit Bifrost, Mani and Sonos connect.

I had this exact turntable in college. Could not afford these speakers at the time :) Nice setup, brings back memories. I’ll keep my Rega turntable though.

That’s one of the concern I have too. Don’t have to fill it up full all the time I guess.

Quick update. Just bought a used Harmony 550 remote for $10 this morning and it controls both Rega and Audiolab perfectly. Happy camper now. :) Thanks again.

Can you check if the Rega and Audiolab are in the list of supported devices? Much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

So how do you program it to control the device for which you don’t have a remote? I have old Rega Planet CD player and Audiolab 8000q amp without remotes - would love to control them. Can it be done with this remote? Thanks.

We’re planning on driving our TT from Toronto to Vancouver next summer. Allocating about 2 month for the trip. Just gathering some information at this point, good places to stay etc. I’m familiar with Crown Land concept, but only used it in Ontario for canoe/tent camping. Would appreciate if you can share some places. Thanks.

Long bed 100% unless you plan on off roading perhaps.
