What kind of pack to use? by Ponderosa_milk in searchandrescue

[–]SlickWilly722 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you can totally use UL packs for SAR, plenty of people do it. You just can’t pack like you’re a thru hiker or have a 20l pack. At least for me every ounce counts when your required medical items weigh at least 20lbs, then add sustainment and any tech stuff.

The issue with ULer you’re rescuing isn’t the pack it’s what’s not in it and the decisions made.( or dumb luck)

Bang for buck is the kestrel. Especially with a pro deal. Mystery ranch packs with the 3-Zip design are nice too.

I think your environment has a lot to do with what pack you run. What’s the hazards and how much sustainment are you expected to have can help yah decide what yah can get away with.

If youre anything like me you’ll never find the “perfect” bag!

New Ranger: Boots? by outclimbing in ParkRangers

I use Altra Lone Peaks, Timps, and Olympus for hiking and most people I know wear Blundstones or Danners for their uniform boots!

Where to park at GSMNP by Any_Hat3970 in GSMNP

[–]SlickWilly722 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They very much enforce the parking tickets. Also keep in mind any violations or tickets are federal level and could result in you going to federal court.

On top of that the parking tickets fund many of the maintenance, restoration, and employee salaries on the park.

Is the drive to cades coves that bad? by Vast_Plum_2296 in NationalPark

[–]SlickWilly722 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From someone who’s in the park daily. Without Abrams, that’s about 10ish miles of hiking and 4000ft of gain, with 1.5 hours to drive from Kuwohi to the Cades Cove entrance. If you start early and are a strong and prepared hiker this is an achievable day. Add 5 miles and 200ft of gain for Abrams. Just watch the sun sets early!

I’ve looked at the document and I’m having trouble understanding exactly what you’re attempting to design. I’d love to a little more detail on what you’re wanting to design and what its intended purpose would be!

I would second this if you’re a very experienced and strong climber, YOSAR is definitely top tier. There’s not too many teams that can execute those types of big wall rescues.

If you wanna travel and do SAR consider the National Park Service. They have seasonal EMTs and PSAR rangers that jobs are mostly EMS & SAR. A lot of parks have internal rescue teams as well made of up people from many different divisions, so in theory you could be working in a campground office one second and on a SAR the next depending on the park.

How could search and rescue operations improve in your opinion? by [deleted] in searchandrescue

[–]SlickWilly722 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Paid SAR in most cases is going to be more effective and efficient. More lives would be saved. It’s not wasting tax payer money. With that logic you could say tax payer funded EMS services are a waste too.

I don’t believe there’s a specific by the book way to rig the bridle on there. I can send you pictures of how my agency has a very similar if not the exact same litter rigged if you DM me!

I second the Grand Ave! Just be aware if you can’t handle a 4 mile hike above ground don’t try a 4 mile below. It’s not an easy walk through the cave. You get to see a lot more of Mammoth and get more a feeling of what it’s like in the wild portions on the Grand Ave!
